(한글👇🏼) My area code is 812—a number I’ve carried since I began my doctoral degree in Bloomington. (And yes, I still receive the occasional parking scam text from Indiana!) Bloomington was my first home in the US; it’s where I immersed myself in music for four years and where I met lifelong friends, mentors, and Bruce. Fond memories!
As such, I am excited to announce that I will now spend more time in Bloomington, this time as a professor of composition—a side I never experienced last time. I am still not sure if I am the right person, but I will do my best to contribute with what I have. And I know I will work with wonderful people.
Speaking of wonderful people, I had nothing but a lovely six years in San Diego and at SDSU. The hardest part of making this decision for me was that I couldn’t stay at SDSU. But I will be around for at least a year and a half, since Bruce works at St. Paul’s Cathedral, and I will be back to see you and do some work more often than you think.
I have nothing but gratitude left—to Bruce, my parents, teachers, friends, students, and colleagues, for all their love and support. I hope to continue sharing it with more people through my music, teaching, and service. Go Hoosiers—and come study at IU with us (or send your students/friends to IU)!

Thank you, @jmuschoolofmusic ! I’m grateful to the performers and the composition students I enjoyed working with, to my wonderful hosts on the composition faculty, Drs. Jason Haney and Eric Guinivan (both IU alums, go Hoosiers!), and to Dr. Gui Hwan Lee, who did tremendous work behind the scenes. by @texu_kim

(한글👇🏼) The Hasla International Festival of the Arts @hasla_festival wrapped up last week, but the memories will linger. On October 18 in Gangneung, Jae-Hyuck Cho @jaecho777 gave the world premiere of my piano concerto Ailleurs: The Elsewhere Within with the Hasla-Classikan Festival Orchestra, which I conducted. It’s 20 minutes of a journey inward that never quite arrives, yet Jae-Hyuck and the orchestra played it as if they’d always known the way. My deepest thanks to Jae-Hyuck and Inyoung @inyoung_madamhuh to everyone at Hasla who made this premiere happen, and to everyone who came!!

Here we go again: 11 performances in 13 days. Swipe for the full run.

It starts tomorrow at the American Academy of Arts and Letters, where Ensemble Échappé playing Ritus Sanitatem, and ends with Youl Sun playing Pansori Fantasy in Salt Lake City on 11/6. In between: Carnegie Hall, Wabash College, University of Iowa, Indiana University, and five pieces at the JMU Contemporary Music Festival, including the world premiere of All Out!! (More on that one later)

Dates and venues on my website!!

Twelve days later, still full.
Bab Meogeossoh (“Did you eat?”) premiered at the @schubertclub Schubert Club in St. Paul on October 11, played by the family it was written for: Kyu-Young Kim @kyuviolin725 , Pitnarry Shin, and their son Orion @orionkim_ with Misha Amory @mishaamory . In Korean, “did you eat?” is how families say “I love you” without saying it. Writing a piece about leaving home and coming back, for this family, was one of the great privileges of my life.
Thank you to the Schubert Club, the friends who made this gift possible, everyone who stood up at the end, and Joe and Kay for being my home away from home. 🍚

Happy 70th to the one and only Bruce Neswick!!
It’s already the 20th here in Korea, so he’ll have plenty of time to celebrate.
After my piano concerto premiered on Sunday at the Hasla International Festival of the Arts, a room full of friends sang “Happy Birthday” to Bruce - one of the most joyful moments of the trip!
Many thanks to Jae-Hyuck and InYoung for hosting so generously, and to Erik and Chuyoung for coming all the way from the US to celebrate with us. (They also celebrated Bruce’s 40th, 50th, and 60th)
Bruce, you and your music have lifted so many people; here’s to many more years of music and adventure! 🎉🎂 by @texu_kim
