Happy Birthday, Mom. I’d say we miss you, but you and I know that doesn’t need saying. Especially with how you’re still here in so many ways. Like how I hear your laugh in Ilias’ excited squee when we wish you good morning. Or in the sucking of your daughter’s teeth when I run my mouth a little too close to the edge. You echo through the way Gigi says “Seriously?!” whenever I try and make the world bigger for her with some silly factoid that’s only marginally connected to what we’re talking about.

You shine across eternity in the way Rodeo’s face grows three sizes with a smile when Sela gets home from a week away living a life you dreamed for her. You thunder across time in the strength your daughter has shown in the face of all of this…

I miss the woman who asked me square up the first night I met her knowing what it would take to marry her daughter, to stand beside the woman you knew you raised. I miss the woman who always had matching socks for us any time I saw her (the Reese’s Pieces still hold up, the Elvis socks still feel shady as hell, ma). I miss the mother in law who earnestly told me she liked my experimental noise music (WHO GETS THAT KIND OF LOVE?!?).

“Quit it,” I can hear across the vail.

So fine, it’s silly to say I miss you when you’re still everywhere. When I get the pleasure to carry you alongside the two amazing people you brought into this world. Thanks for the trust, I guess I’d rather say. But still, we miss you. And we’re gonna say it even when you’re here with us.

Happy Birthday, Ma. Or, Abuela, as we say around the house these days, ya old lady. Gonna enjoy ribbing you for a while with that one. by @thatdobson

MFW Dolly is gone and I’m somehow in the New York Times and we quietly launched a lil Apero Cafe and Dolly will never get to meet my son and…

What we ain’t gonna do is get too sad about it. What we ain’t gonna do is pretend that Dolly was any more of a person than we are capable of being. What we are going to do is carry Ms Parton’s light on through this world, fighting for children’s literacy, a welcome seat at the table for everyone, and not being afraid of letting our individual, specific light shine.

Come try some of these drinks. Preferably with a bunch of yer friends. by @thatdobson

Last night your Mama wanted to wrestle me.

That’s not a euphemism, kid,
I’m not that hack.

I told her that was a bad idea on multiple levels.
I told her that, well, you’re in there,
And it’s probably not great for a baby,
To wrestle his mama while he’s there,

And she said, so?

And then I reminded her,

I currently have three stitches in my hand
From making a drink called Kingkiller
And thinking about how excited
I was that you were home
From seeing Run the Jewels
And listening to jazz
And eatin’ begnets
With your mama

And she said,

Oh, yeah, that’s right.

And I don’t know what to say kid,
Other than this is your home team.

See ya in December! by @thatdobson

Welp. I said I was gonna not hide what I was making, and I done spent the last two days working on a new song for a musical I’m writing with the AllDaddy hisself, Mr. @daveanzuelo. That ain’t ready just yet, so here’s me playing yet another @timmytychilders tune and beginning my campaign to sing the bass part of Triune God in my fav black dress at Radio Music Hall. Prolly won’t happen, but a gal can dream. Anywho, here’s a song about waking up still drunk, which I, a good Christian person who remains warshed in the blood, know absolutely nothing about.

Hi.

Today the Supreme Court begins hearing a series of cases that essentially boil down to one simple question:
“Should employers be able to fire LGBTQIA+ people for being?” Now, quite obviously, I have feelings about it. I really hope you do to. Because, my dear reader, this isn’t just about us folx who look and love a hair differently. It never is.

Anti-Trans sentiment inevitably comes back home to roost with cis folx in the end. Just ask any of the cisgender women who’ve been harassed in the wake of transphobic bathroom bills. Just ask Caster Semenya, cis woman and South African runner who is harassed for beating the pants of her competition.
Those with power want to police our bodies any way they can. If they control our bodies, then they can make sure they always have the top of the mountain. “It’s just natural that you get paid less.”
“It’s just natural that you’re not management.”
“This just isn’t the kind of work that’s natural for a lady.”
“This just isn’t the kind of work a Trans person should do.” Even if you don’t want to fight for the LGBTQIA+ folx in your life on sheer principle alone, maybe consider that whatever bullshit those in power swing against us... they’re gonna swing it at you next.

So today, I’m doing what my mother taught me to do when someone tells you can’t:

Put on a pair of fabulously dangly earrings, pull up your big girl panties, and you go prove them real wrong. by @thatdobson
