Why are some pitchers so difficult to hit? ⚾️

It’s not always about velocity. It’s about pitch tunneling.

Pitch tunneling happens when two different pitches follow similar paths early in flight, making it difficult for hitters to recognize what’s coming before the pitches break apart.

The key?
- Similar release points
- Similar early trajectories
- Different movement near the plate
The goal is to make the hitter commit before they can recognize the pitch. #TheFarm #9ersBaseball #PitchingDevelopment #PitchDesign #pitchtunneling by @the_farm_nj

Breaking down the pitching delivery into 5 key phases. ⚾️

From the initial leg lift to the final follow-through, every part of the delivery plays an important role in creating an efficient, repeatable, and powerful pitching motion.

Master the details. Improve the delivery. Develop on the mound.

💥 HITTER SEPARATION: POWER STARTS HERE.

Great hitters like Shohei Ohtani create separation by allowing their hips to begin rotating while their upper body stays loaded.

⚾️ Why does it matter?
• Helps create rotational power
• Contributes to bat speed
• Allows hitters to transfer energy efficiently through the swing

It’s not just about swinging harder — it’s about moving efficiently. 📈

Most pitchers think the arm is where it starts. It starts way earlier than that.
Drift is controlled forward movement down the mound, from your leg lift into your stride. Watch Yamamoto in the video. He builds momentum toward the plate without rushing or forcing it.
Try this in your next bullpen: stop thinking about your arm for a few throws and just focus on moving down the mound with control. #playerdevelopment #baseball #baseballtraining #pitchingmechanics #pitchingmechanics by @the_farm_nj

⚾️ TRAIN WITH VARIETY. SWING WITH PURPOSE. 💥
Using a shorter bat and a heavier bat can help hitters develop different aspects of their swing. @lukelonczak #baseball #baseballtraining #njbaseball #playerdevelopment #farm by @the_farm_nj

Stop chasing velocity for a second.
One of the biggest separators isn’t always how hard you throw it’s where you release the ball.
A pitcher throwing 90 mph with around 6 feet of extension can make the pitch play significantly faster because the hitter has less time to react.
The goal isn’t to reach farther. It’s to create extension through efficient movement down the mound.

⚾ What is Induced Vertical Break (IVB)?

IVB measures how much a pitch resists gravity compared to a pitch thrown without spin. More IVB can help a fastball stay above hitters’ barrels, but more IVB doesn’t automatically mean more outs.

📈 Alex Vesia has the most with 21.2” IVB, helping his fastball play at the top of the zone and generate outs.

📉 Chase Dollander has just 13” IVB, yet he can still get outs consistently with his pitch characteristics, location, and ability to attack hitters.

The takeaway? IVB is a valuable tool, but Pitch design, location, velocity, and execution all matter. It’s not just about how much a pitch moves it’s about how you use it. 💪⚾
