March can be a very testing month for the bees. With depleting honey stores, increasing brood volumes requiring copious food resources, an ever-aging population of overwintering bees and the vagaries of the UK weather, the bees are arguably at their greatest risk of starvation during this month.

When do you stop feeding ?

Bees can be affected by a number of diseases, including bacterial, viral, and parasitic diseases. This hive died from a combination of Varroa mites: A parasite that affects honey bees. And starvion.
How to prevent this check hive food stores regularly. Check the mite try and treat accordingly.

AT THE APIARY
In the autumn we put the Bees to bed for the winter first ensuring they all had plenty of store's by hefting and feeding with Ambrosier and then fondant if needed. At the end of December we treated all of the colony's for Varroa by vaping with Oxalic acid. Throughout the winter we continued to monitor the mite drop by meeting up once every two weeks. While not having to inspect the bees it gave us the opportunity to catch up on all of the outstanding jobs at the Apiary preparing and planning for this year's season. Meeting up regularly throughout the winter gave us the opportunity to keep in touch and do what Beekeepers do best - talk about Bees.

Incredible as it may seem, the honey bee has FIVE eyes, two large compound eyes and three smaller ocelli eyes in the centre of its head.
This is picture is from my hive.

It was a very sad day in bee keeping today. Two hive lots to Varroa. Varroa mites are parasites that can weaken and kill honey bee colonies. They can also transmit viruses that can cause physical damage to bees and in the end, kill them.

🐝 With all the cold weather and snow, we feed our winter Bees to help them survive over the winter. Winter Bees live long than summer Bees. Winter bees can live up to 6 months and summer bees 6 weeks. 🐝
Bees do not Hibernate, but they do reduce their activity and metabolism. They clter together in the hive to keep warm, with the queen at the center. Lucky Queen 👸
