The Heritage Management Organization: training heritage leaders #heritagenation

The destruction of the Juukan Gorge rock shelters in 2020 exposed the shortcomings of Australia’s Indigenous heritage protection laws. Australia has yet to introduce a national heritage protection framework grounded in the principle of free, prior and informed consent. Reflecting on this loss from Bologna, the contrast with Italy’s strong preservation culture raises important questions about how heritage is valued and protected. Despite growing recognition of the deep history and living cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, meaningful protection requires more than consultation: it requires giving Traditional Owners genuine authority over their Country and heritage. 🎃👻 What do ghosts, ancient rituals, and cultural heritage have in common? More than you might think! Did you know that some of the traditions behind #Halloween date back more than 2,000 years? One of its historical roots is Samhain, an ancient Celtic festival marking the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter. People lit bonfires and wore costumes, with customs linked to beliefs about spirits and the changing seasons. But here's what makes Halloween interesting from a heritage perspective: traditions are never really frozen in time! They travel, mix with other customs, take on new meanings, and evolve into the celebrations we know today. So, while you're carving pumpkins, dressing up, or telling spooky stories tonight, remember: you're also taking part in a tradition with a long and fascinating cultural history! Happy Halloween! 🎃 by @the_heritage_nation

📣 Oral History and Heritage Workshop | Monterrey, Mexico On October 8–9, HERITΛGE held its in-person Oral History and Heritage workshop at the Museo Estatal de Culturas Populares de Nuevo León, as part of our HerMaP Mexico initiative. The workshop brought together eight participants working with Indigenous communities and cultural heritage projects, representing at least five Indigenous peoples residing in Nuevo León. Through methodological tools, ethical reflection, and practical exercises, participants explored how oral history can help document, preserve, and transmit community memories, knowledge, and living cultural practices. We were delighted to welcome guest facilitator Dr. Claudia Uribe Chinen, Peruvian archaeologist and HERITΛGE alumna, who shared her expertise and a case study from Peru. We also welcomed Diana Laura Lozano Linares and David Maldonado Pérez from CEMPO in Ciudad Juárez, who shared their experiences working with Indigenous peoples in the region, bringing valuable perspectives on migration, identity, and living heritage. ✨ The exchange highlighted the power of community-led oral history and the importance of strengthening connections among those working to safeguard living heritage across northern Mexico. Thank you to all participants and facilitators for their contributions, insights, and commitment to keeping community memories and cultural knowledge alive! #HERITΛGE #HerMaPMexico #CulturalHeritage #HeritageManagement #Mexico by @the_heritage_nation

How can communities shape the ways their heritage is understood, cared for and shared? This question was at the heart of HERITΛGE’s four-day online workshop, Engaging Communities in Cultural Heritage, which brought together 23 participants from 18 countries to explore inclusive, ethical and meaningful approaches to community engagement. Through collaborative exercises, practical discussions and expert insights, participants explored how approaches such as Asset-Based Community Development, asset mapping, ethnographic research and oral history can support more participatory heritage practices. The programme addressed key challenges, including trust, representation, accessibility, informed consent, community ownership and the ethical responsibilities involved in documenting and sharing personal and collective histories. Led by Dr Aris Anagnostopoulos and Dr Lena Stefanou, the workshop concluded with a guest lecture by Elijah Vanderpuye Cunnison of Ghana’s National Commission on Culture, who shared insights into Ghanaian heritage, community-based initiatives and the connections between heritage, education, human rights, sustainability and cultural identity. ✨ Across diverse contexts and perspectives, one message stood out: meaningful heritage engagement begins with listening, building trust and recognising communities as active participants in shaping their own heritage. #HERITΛGE #CulturalHeritage #CommunityEngagement #HeritageManagement by @the_heritage_nation

International Day of Intangible Cultural Heritage 🌍 Intangible cultural heritage is constantly evolving, shaped by the people, places, and circumstances that give it meaning. Yet, in a world of rapid social change, migration, digital transformation, and growing cultural homogenisation, keeping traditions alive is becoming an increasingly important challenge. For heritage management, safeguarding living heritage means looking beyond preservation alone. It means supporting the communities that sustain it, creating space for younger generations to engage with it, and recognising that traditions can evolve without losing their significance. The question is not simply how we preserve the past, but how we ensure that cultural knowledge, skills, and practices remain relevant and meaningful in the future. Living heritage survives when it is practised, shared, and passed on. Its future depends on the choices we make today. #IntangibleCulturalHeritage #HeritageManagement #LivingHeritage #HeritageManagement by @the_heritage_nation
