Meet the Maker: Njabulo Hlophe

Johannesburg-based visual storyteller Njabulo Hlophe explores the influence of the Zionist church on masculinity through a distinctly contemporary artistic lens.

His latest body of work draws on the visual language of the congregation, referencing the sacred garments worn by worshippers and spiritual staffs known as izikhali. These objects carry meaning beyond their physical form, evoking ideas of sacrifice, surrender and the search for protection from illness and misfortune.

Through these references, Njabulo considers how faith shapes masculine identity: from the way men present themselves to the values, rituals and expressions of belonging that inform their lives.

SUMMER STYLE: ROOM TO BE OUTSIDE ☀️

In South Africa, summer living starts at the pool deck. But creating an outdoor room takes more than a lounger and a view. Think layered textures, generous seating, soft furnishings and a rug to anchor the space.

The Rockwall Rug from @homestead_decor is a timeless black outdoor rug that offers easy, everyday living.

Their wider collection offers plenty of ways to layer in texture, from hard-wearing outdoor designs to natural sisal, jute and seagrass rugs, in chunky weaves, bouclé finishes and classic patterns. Practical, tactile and made to bring a little more living to the outdoors. by @the_style_edit_sa

A little more freedom. A little more flight.

For Lara Frances, these ceramic birds are about more than form and feather. They speak to a return to creativity and the freedom to imagine a different kind of life.

Years in the corporate world, a period of burnout and a breast cancer diagnosis in 2023 prompted Lara to pause. Somewhere in that difficult chapter, she took her art materials out of a box and began reconnecting with a part of herself she’d set aside.

Birds felt like a natural place to begin. Symbols of flight, possibility and new beginnings, they became a way to give shape to the next chapter.

The pieces are playful and elegant, but their meaning runs deeper: a reminder that sometimes, finding your wings means finding your way back to yourself.

A little loo with a bit of blue.

👉🏽Here’s the advice we would give you if we weren’t afraid of hurting your feelings. If you have a 𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘆 𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺, give it 𝗮 𝗯𝗶𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆.

A playful blue guest loo steals the show at this Thesen Island holiday home, proving that small spaces are the perfect place to have a little design fun.

Featuring the @funkytiles_sa Ava Ocean Gloss tile, a Gio Ivy rimless toilet, paired with a Rossco Greco countertop basin and the Meir tall basin mixer in brushed nickel.

A more considered kind of underfoot 👣

Since the 1970s, Polokwane-based @rebtex_carpets has been weaving sisal into wall-to-wall carpets and loose-lay rugs, working with natural fibres including jute, seagrass and coconut coir.

The appeal lies in the materials themselves: tactile, textural and full of natural character. Even better, Rebtex’s online “𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗮 𝗥𝘂𝗴” tool lets you customise your dimensions and material before requesting a quote.

Colour, with conviction.

At House Greyling, colour isn’t an afterthought. The homeowner, an interior designer with a deep appreciation for South African art and design, has embraced a rich palette of emerald, chartreuse and mustard, bringing depth, energy and personality to the interiors.

Local creativity is woven throughout, from the ‘Conducting Life’ painting by @ingridnuss to the rich curry coloured tiles from @funkytiles_sa available at @stiles_tiles_with_style . And then there are the windows: framing views so vivid they could almost be moving paintings.

A home with colour, character and a distinctly South African point of view.

Meet the maker: Mies de Jager

For Stellenbosch-based artist Mies de Jager @artbymies light and dark are more than contrasts on a canvas. They shape how we see the world and each other.

Self-taught, with a nod to Expressionism, Mies builds richly textured paintings using unconventional tools, from palette knives to mops and credit cards. Her impasto-inspired technique gives form to emotional portraits, familiar South African faces and atmospheric landscapes.

Her work explores the passage of time, perception and the beauty that emerges in unexpected places. As Mies puts it, “Light has the power to make the ordinary extraordinary.”

Mountains, too, hold a particular magic for her. They shift our perspective, whether we’re driving through them, climbing them or looking out from their peaks.

In Mies’s world, contrast is not something to resolve. It’s what gives art, and people, character.

@artbymies can be viewed at Houtlander Heritage House until the end of November by @the_style_edit_sa

Yarn, memory and the threads we inherit.

For Sagwadi Mohlabi, yarn carries more than texture. It holds memory, labour and knowledge passed down through generations of women.

The Limpopo-born, self-taught fibre artist works with punch needling, tufting and fibre-based photographic construction, drawing on the woven Xitsonga skirts her grandmother made by hand.

These inherited traditions become a lens through which Mohlabi explores desire and acquisition within Black womanhood: what we long for, what remains beyond reach, and how our sense of self shifts when the once-unattainable becomes possible.

Her work sits at the intersection of inheritance and agency, asking what we carry forward — and what we make our own.

In 2025, Mohlabi undertook an international residency with Rele Gallery in Lagos. She was named a finalist for the 2026 Blessing Ngobeni Art Prize and presented her work at RMB Latitudes Art Fair in 2026.
