POSTS STORIES REELS

Hey so you know how I’ve been mentioning this new album for months now? Well .. the album is done. And … it’s VERY DIFFERENT from anything I’ve made before.

In fact it’s so different, I’m releasing it under a different name: my great grandmother's familiar name, in homage to all the women in my line past, present, and future. We’ve been through a lot, and this new project is about looking the past square in the eyes with a fierce and tender confession that it's time to dream new dreams of care and connection. It’s about a lot more than that too, which I’ll tell you ad nauseum over the next few months as I release these songs

But for now just this - introducing you to the moniker I’ve been living inside of since November 2024 when I got a phone call that set the completion of this album (started in 2020) in motion:

MA REILLY.
@_mareilly

Can you do the things? - the likes, the follows, comments, shares, saves, etc? It helps more than you know. Thank you. I love you. Here we go.

🌺 There's so much happening everywhere all the time. I decided to use this picture of myself smiling for this because I want to conjure us smiling and laughing together because if you are like me you might be starved for fun and joy right now. The songs might be sad, but the company will be sweet and I promise we can laugh if we can laugh, and your joy will be welcomed in equal measure to your grief and despair at any time. "Keep the faith" my loves (That's a Morrie Turner quote) and see you out there. by @theanniebacon

A long time coming. Too many places on the Internet are not healthy anymore. Patreon will be a place to build something - you’re probably already there as I know so many of you support a cadre of artists!

My ideas and art will be the spark, but I hope we’ll create together. Let’s converse … convene … commune.

Most things will be available to the FREE tier, because it’s essential to me / my life philosophy that my art be accessible to as many as may benefit from it. New songs, books/music recs. Political reflections.

There will be some $ tiers if you’re in a place to do that. In these tiers you’ll get some extras like old songs, demos, and you’ll (as a group) get to give me a prompt for a song each month!

I will still post some things other places. But the bulk of my energy will go into Patreon. I chose Patreon because Dash bullied me into it. He’s basically my manager now and I’m so lucky for it. Smart kid.

Thank you for coming all this way with me. I owe so much to your love, support, feedback, gifts, and presence.

Onward together I hope.

Even as my heart breaks in missing her all I can think is "thank you for this love so big that it fills my eyes with tears to remind me"

(9/12) It’s finally time to tell you about @matlarimer (producer and ambient artist co-orbiting Detroit & Portland OR) who mixed and mastered the album and so much more.

I met Mat in 2025 and later he gave me my first lesson in Ableton. From that (plus hearing his music) I knew a *little* about his disposition and his ear (@mynameissparekey). I knew for this project that I needed someone not only talented in mixing the style of music I was aiming towards, but also steadfast AND tender enough to hold the scope of the project with me, and understand that this was more than an album.

Working with Mat was a total dream.

From the first day that I sat on his studio couch shaking with fear and a roughly hewn project, he seemed to understand the gravity and sacredness. He was patient with sometimes long waits between steps, and held beautiful boundaries of his own that I could trust so I didn't worry about flooding or overwhelming him. He sat in my car with me on Belle Isle for hours listening and talking through early mixes so I could paint the picture in words that my skills wouldn’t let me finish painting in Ableton

He HEARD me. He nailed what I asked. His “additional production” stitched breaks in the seams of songs, and cannot be undervalued in this process, and his mixing brought the tracks into relation, making it truly an album.

If there’s anything you HATE about the production of this album - blame me, because Mat just made my vision come to life. If there’s anything you really LOVE, he probably made it better. I’ll be grateful forever.

He’s available for hire for production, mixing/mastering, and he’s a great hang, giant fucking heart. Can recommend.

BTW he also made the amazing @lil.bluedots artwork for the singles! We’ll be making some lithos of those I think and he’ll be co-billing the listening party / release! by @theanniebacon

Real talk: I’m not sure I will ever be able to sing some of these songs live. As such, instead, there will be listening sessions to start. First in Ann Arbor. Later elsewhere.

Join us for a special listening session of MA REILLY (Annie Bacon)'s latest release: Exile to Neptune. The electro-folk album will be played in its entirety in a listening environment, followed by a special soothing-balm set from Detroit artist @mynameissparekey while we talk, mingle, and maybe dance.

A gentle TW: the album covers some heavy topics including sui**al ideation and traw-ma. We will have support people in the room - somatic/embodiment coach @chbloves, curandera @_alejandra.margarita_ and social worker Ashley Hughes - should anything arise for you. Anyone is welcome, but the topics may be heavy for younger listeners. by @theanniebacon

Next weekend I get to join some of my favorite people on stage - people of great heart, art, wit, and delight: @psychomike7 @kristilynndavis @daveboutette. We go by Big Sky Company for one song and one night only (Probably) as a benefit for the ACLU and to share the beautiful "Walk Up This Hill" that Mike & Dave wrote and Kristi & I joined in on the recording of over at Big Sky Recording.

We'll jump in on each others songs and jokes, and probably make a lot of it up as we go. I'm hoping Dave will play the oyster song, and Mike has a "particles to pearls" song.

It'll be one of those damn sweet nights that you're so glad you got out from under the fuzzy blanket for.

We hope to sell em out in advance at our beloved home away from home: North Star Lounge. So if you're hoping to come, don't wait to buy them at the door. Grab em now. All that money goes to protecting democracy. by @theanniebacon

(8/12) While the process so far had been a massive step forward creatively, and completing the work on my own served an important philosophical and spiritual need, I have learned through *hard-won* wisdom the importance of bringing other people into a project.

One of those folks was @mybrightestdiamond’s Shara Nova.

Shara’s songwriting and production skill has long been a north star for me. We met by chance in the Detroit airport when our kids were very young, and have stayed in touch here and there. I had the privilege of interviewing her for the @metrotimes years ago and over the summer I got to join her on stage for a song at @aasummerfest which was a dream.

When I asked if Shara would listen to the demos, I don’t know exactly what I hoped, but what she offered was the absolute best possible thing for me: not a note by note picking apart of songs and sounds, but a set of tools, principles, and practices that I could (and did) apply broadly across the whole project to rework, cull, and hone the vision and the sounds.

I'm immensely grateful for Shara’s insight, and the whole album is better for it.

If you don’t already know My Brightest Diamond's music, you're welcome. Start anywhere and go in any direction.
