What happens when the second capital of an empire refuses to be second best?

In 1867 the Compromise turned the Habsburg monarchy into Austria-Hungary, and Budapest became its second capital. Seventeen years later it opened the Hungarian State Opera.

The story goes that Franz Joseph set one condition: it could not be bigger than Vienna's opera. Budapest kept to the rule. It simply made its opera more beautiful.

Miklós Ybl designed it. Gold leaf on almost every surface, red velvet boxes, Károly Lotz's fresco of Olympus on the ceiling, and a bronze chandelier weighing several tonnes. Gustav Mahler ran the house from 1888 to 1891.

Vienna kept the size. Budapest kept the splendour.

Save this for your next evening in Budapest.

Germany's Roman road trip starts where the empire once ruled from. | Anzeige

Trier. Germany's oldest city. The Porta Nigra has guarded it since around 170 AD. Constantine's 67-metre throne hall is still standing. The imperial baths still frame the sky.

Villa Borg. A Roman country estate rebuilt on its original foundations: the villa, the baths, the gardens. In the tavern you can taste dishes cooked from ancient Roman recipes. @roemische.villa.borg

Dalheim, Luxembourg. A Roman theatre for 3,500 people, built in the 2nd century on the road that linked the Mediterranean to the Rhine. Still there.

Victor's Residenz-Hotel Schloss Berg @victorshotelschlossberg , Nennig. Dinner at Bacchus, a spa modelled on Roman baths, and a 3rd-century gladiator mosaic a few hundred metres away, still lying where it was laid.

Two countries. One empire. Nobody told you it was all this close.

Save this for your next trip.

Some hotels give you a room. This one gives you two eras. | Anzeige

Victor's Residenz-Hotel Schloss Berg stands among the vineyards of the Upper Moselle, where Germany, France and Luxembourg meet. It is made of two buildings: a villa built in the image of ancient Rome, and a castle that looks as if it stepped out of the Renaissance.

Choose your century. In the villa, the rooms have gilded headboards, heavy drapery, carpets in emerald and coral, and art drawn from Roman antiquity. In the castle, ornate mirrors and jewel-toned canopies over the beds feel like a fairy tale written in silk. From the suites, the vineyards spread out below like an open map.

Spend the afternoon in a spa inspired by Roman baths. Take an aperitif at Caesar's, the wine bar named after the man who conquered Gaul. Then candlelight, Moselle wine and Mediterranean plates at Bacchus, under the gaze of marble busts.

Romans lived here first. A few hundred metres away, a 3rd-century mosaic of gladiators still lies exactly where they laid it. Two thousand years later, people still come to this valley for the same reasons: wine, warmth and beauty.

Breakfast on the terrace. Vineyards in every direction. Three countries within reach, and no reason to leave.

Victor's Residenz-Hotel Schloss Berg, Nennig.
Where the Roman way of living never quite ended.

The oldest city in Germany. A Roman town in Luxembourg. The best Christmas market in France. One road. | Anzeige

Start in Trier. Two Christmas markets simultaneously, Hauptmarkt and the Domfreihof in front of the UNESCO cathedral. Both free. November 20 to December 22, 2026. Behind the stalls: a Roman gate standing since the 2nd century. In your mug: Moselle Riesling mulled wine, served by Germany's only Mulled Wine Queen. Named best Christmas market in Germany in 2024.

Then Ricciacum in Dalheim, Luxembourg. The most important Roman site in the Grand Duchy. Founded during the reign of Augustus on the Via Agrippa. A theatre from the 2nd century AD that seated 3,500 people.

Luxembourg City: Winterlights festival across five squares. November 20, 2026 to January 3, 2027. One of the longest Christmas seasons in the region.

Metz: the cathedral nave is the third highest in France. 6,500 square meters of stained glass. The Christmas market fills Place Saint-Louis and the cathedral quarter. One of the most atmospheric in the Greater Region.

End at Victor's Residenz-Hotel Schloss Berg @victorshotelschlossberg in Nennig. Restaurant Bacchus, bar Caesar's, spa modeled on Roman baths. A few hundred meters away, the Nennig Roman mosaic, 160 square meters of 3rd century stonework, still at its original site.

The Romans built this road. The Christmas lights are new. Everything underneath them is not.

Rome built the empire's centre. Trier ran it from the edge.

Rome: the Colosseum, completed in 80 AD, held 50,000 spectators. Every monument there was built to be seen.

Trier: Germany's oldest city, nearly 1,000 kilometres north. In the 4th century, Constantine ruled the western empire from here. The Porta Nigra has stood since around 170 AD. His 67-metre throne hall is a church today. The Roman baths still frame the sky over the city.

Rome became the symbol. Trier never stopped living inside its past.

I found the most Roman hotel in Germany. 🇩🇪🏛️ | Anzeige

And it happens to sit in a region where the Romans actually lived.

Victor’s Residenz-Hotel Schloss Berg @victorshotelschlossberg isn’t simply decorated with a few Roman references. Its main building was designed as a modern interpretation of a Roman villa, with classical details woven throughout the interiors.

There’s a restaurant called Bacchus, a Caesar’s Bar, Roman-inspired suites, and just minutes away, some of the region’s most remarkable Roman remains.

The Roman Villa Nennig, with its extraordinary mosaic, is practically next door. Villa Borg, Trier and traces of the Roman world are scattered across the wider region.

So if you’re exploring Roman Germany, this might be one of the rare places where the historical story doesn’t end when you return to your hotel.

❓️Would you stay here while exploring Roman Germany?

Lego chose Brussels for the world's first centre of its kind. I was bored within twenty minutes.

The Lego Discovery Centre in Brussels opened as the first of its kind in the world. The concept: an indoor Lego experience centre with rides, building zones, a 4D cinema, and a miniature Brussels built entirely from Lego bricks. The Atomium in purple. The Grand Place in beige. Tiny Lego people on tiny Lego streets.

It is designed for children aged 3 to 10. The website says this clearly. Most adults who walk in without children discover this about fifteen minutes too late.

The miniature city is genuinely impressive in scale. Millions of bricks. Months of construction. The level of detail visible only when you crouch down to street level and look at it the way a child would. Standing upright it reads as a coloured surface. On your knees it becomes a city.

That gap between how the space was designed to be experienced and how most adults actually experience it is the whole problem. Lego at its best is a thinking tool, open-ended, spatial, patient. Lego Discovery Centre is a themed attraction with a gift shop at the exit. Both exist. They are not the same thing.

Brussels got the first one in the world. Make of that what you will.

❓️Would you go back with a child?

Imagine walking into a milk shop in 1892. And this was the interior.

In 1892 Villeroy & Boch decorated a dairy store in Dresden for the Pfund brothers floor to ceiling in hand-painted ceramic tiles. Walls, columns, counter, floor. Every surface covered. The original is still standing in Dresden. It holds a Guinness World Record as the most beautiful dairy shop in the world.

The café in Mettlach is not a copy of it. It is a reinterpretation, built inside a former factory hall of the Villeroy & Boch headquarters, using the original 19th century blueprints and sales catalogues preserved in the company archives. The same technique. The same materials. A different room.

Every illustration and ornament was hand-painted by ceramic artists using the same methods as the original. The tiles were cast using reconstructed moulds made by hand.

‼️ It is also a working café. Coffee, cake, lunch. You can sit inside a Victorian ceramic interior and order a sandwich.

This is what confused you when you walked in. It should have confused you. The boundary between museum exhibit and functioning space is gone. The room is simultaneously a historical document and a place where someone is currently making your coffee.

The original is in Dresden. The interpretation is here. Both are real.

Would you have known it wasn't the original?

The rulers changed. Then they changed the religion of the entire town.

Beilstein is a village of around 60 people on the Moselle river. It looks like a fairy tale. The history is not.

In the 16th century, when the lord of the castle converted to Protestantism, every resident of Beilstein was required by law to convert with him. Not asked. Required. The principle was cuius regio, eius religio, whoever rules the territory determines its religion. One man's conversion became everyone's conversion overnight.

Then the Thirty Years' War arrived. Spanish troops occupied Beilstein between 1620 and 1634 and imposed Catholicism again. The entire town changed religion for the second time in living memory. Not by choice. By occupation.

When the last Winneburg ruler died without a male heir, the Metternich family took over. They brought Carmelite monks from Cologne specifically to re-Catholicise the town. The monastery they built still stands above the village on the hill.

This is Layering in its most intimate form. Not a city accumulating centuries of architecture. A community accumulating centuries of imposed identities, each one replacing the last, none of them chosen.

The town burned in 1689 during the Nine Years' War and was rebuilt on the exact same footprint. The streets are the same. The houses are the same. The monastery is still there.

The village looks unchanged. Almost nothing about it actually is.

What would you have done if your ruler changed your religion overnight?

In 1988 the Soviets did something NASA's Space Shuttle never did. They launched a fully automated space shuttle. No crew. No pilot. Nobody on board.

On November 15, 1988, Buran launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome, completed two orbits of the Earth, and landed automatically. The entire mission took 206 minutes. No human being was on board at any point. NASA's Space Shuttle, by comparison, was never designed to fly without a crew. It couldn't.

Buran was the Soviet answer to the Space Shuttle, visually almost identical, technically different in one fundamental way. The Americans built a vehicle that needed humans to operate. The Soviets built one that didn't.

It flew once. The Soviet Union collapsed three years later. The program was cancelled. The funding disappeared. The engineers scattered. Most of the hardware was left in hangars to deteriorate.

One Buran orbiter was destroyed in 2002 when the roof of its hangar at Baikonur collapsed. Another sits in a museum where visitors can walk through it. A third exists in various states of incompleteness in storage.

❓️Would you have continued the program?

‼️For 650 years a medieval fortune was hidden under this city. Nobody knew it was there.

On March 21, 1349, the Jewish community of Erfurt was massacred. The Black Death was spreading north through Germany and Jews were accused of poisoning the wells. The quarter around the synagogue burned down. The entire Jewish community, around 1,000 people including distinguished scholars, perished.

Before the pogrom, someone hid everything they had. The Erfurt Treasure was discovered in 1998 by archaeologists under the wall of a cellar entrance in the medieval Jewish neighbourhood. It contains 3,141 silver coins, 14 silver bars, over 700 pieces of Gothic gold and silver jewellery. The owner is believed to have been a Jewish moneychanger named Kalman von Wiehe. He never came back for it.

The Old Synagogue where the treasure is now displayed dates from around 1094, making it one of the oldest, largest and best-preserved medieval synagogues in Europe. For centuries it had been used as a warehouse, a dance hall, a restaurant, a storage space. Nobody knew what the building was.

The gold wedding ring from the 14th century is still there. Still intact. The person who wore it is not.

👉 This is Layering in its most tragic form. A synagogue that became a dance hall. A treasure hidden in a wall for 650 years. A community that disappeared in a single day and left its most valuable objects in the ground. Every city carries layers like this. Most people never know they are walking over them.

❓️What do you feel when an object outlasts the person who hid it?

Most people collect places. The Atlas Aura Method teaches you how to understand them. A practical framework for uncovering the geography, power, history, and hidden logic that shape every city. Because the difference between an ordinary trip and an unforgettable one is not where you go. It's how you see.

Charlemagne stripped marble from Rome and Ravenna and shipped it north. He was building an argument.

In 796 he chose a small city built around Roman hot springs at the edge of the former empire and began constructing his palace complex. The chapel he built is still standing. Consecrated by Pope Leo III in 805, it became the coronation site for 30 German kings over the next 600 years.

The marble columns inside came from Rome and Ravenna, transported north across the Alps. The octagonal plan quotes the Byzantine church of San Vitale in Ravenna. Every architectural decision is a single argument: the Roman empire did not end. It continued here, in this city, under this roof.

Then the Gothic choir was added in the 14th century. Then chapels in the 15th and 16th centuries. Each layer placed on top of what was already there without removing it. The original octagon from 805 sits at the center. Everything else grew around it over seven hundred years.

👉 This is Layering in its most literal form. Not one building but one building that kept becoming a different building while remaining the same building.

Walk through the cathedral and you move through centuries without crossing a threshold. The Carolingian, the Gothic, the Baroque additions are all present simultaneously, each one a record of a moment when someone decided the existing structure needed to continue in a new direction.

Outside: a small German city near the Belgian border. Inside: a room that has been making the same claim for 1,200 years.

The hot springs are still running at 74 degrees Celsius. The empire is not.

❓️What do you feel when you stand inside a space that old?
