The Back Label is the fine print we never read but reveals what we’re made of.
A series hosted by @mackenzielcasey
This is a back-up account.

POSTS STORIES REELS

The Back Label is the fine print we never read, but reveals what we’re made of. 🍷

I’ve spent the past five months creating this series - travelling, filming, interviewing, and pulling together stories from across the wine (and whisky) world - and I’m finally ready to share it.

This is a short-form series exploring wine through the people behind it: winemakers, sommeliers, collectors, and the culture that connects them.

The first episode is now live on @thebacklabelseries and with more than 20 already filmed, this is only the start. by @thebacklabelshow

How to spot a fake bottle… the cheapest bottle is the most dangerous one.

Rudy Kurniawan didn’t just sell fake wine - he exposed a blind spot that still exists in the market today.

I sat down with Nick Pegna, Head of Wine & Spirits at Sotheby’s, and asked him straight: has anything really changed since the Rudy days?

His answer was simple, and every collector needs to hear it.

Nick’s advice: always go for the bottle with the best provenance, the best history, and the best condition - and be willing to pay for it. Fraudsters rely on buyers chasing the bargain.

The fine wine market has evolved, but the tactics haven’t changed much. Know what you’re buying, know where it’s been, and never let price alone make the decision for you.

Inside the Napoléon cellars —— one of the most fascinating cellars in the world and the story behind it. 🍷

Thank you @svthorpe 🙏🏼

At a time when the wine world isn’t in the easiest place, I believe it’s our responsibility to keep bringing new people into it - through storytelling, education, and a deeper connection to the people and places behind every bottle.

Ahhhh!! So much more to come! Cheers 🍷 by @thebacklabelshow

In 2003, Burgundy broke its own rules.

That year brought one of the most extreme heatwaves Europe had ever seen, forcing domaines to reconsider the ban des vendanges -the officially declared date when growers are legally permitted to begin harvest in Burgundy.

For centuries, harvest dates were regulated by law. Growers weren’t free to pick whenever they wanted. The ban des vendanges was announced by local authorities and applied across communes, ensuring that harvest began at the same time.

During vintage, large numbers of seasonal pickers would arrive in the region and move through fortified towns. Controlling harvest dates helped manage labour, maintain order, and regulate movement around the remparts (ramparts) of Beaune - reducing the risk of theft while estates were busy and cellars were full.

Tradition and social control were intertwined.
But 2003 challenged that tradition.

Temperatures soared. Sugar levels spiked. Acidity dropped rapidly.
Growers faced a serious decision: wait for the official date - or protect balance.

Benjamin Leroux, then régisseur of Domaine du Comte Armand and now one of Burgundy’s most respected modern vignerons, spoke about choosing to pick early that year - before the official ban des vendanges - in order to preserve acidity and structure.

2003 marked a turning point - the moment climate began forcing Burgundy to prioritise balance over convention.

And now, with rising temperatures and increasingly volatile seasons, the question feels more relevant than ever:

Should historic wine regions still adhere strictly to age-old harvest laws - or should tradition evolve with climate reality?
