“For Our Reference” — Second print issue.
Full of colour. A conversation. A marker in time.

BLK Brit returns — documenting, questioning, and celebrating what it means to exist, create, and remember. This issue is about reclaiming our narrative, in our own words, on our own terms - led by our cover star, Tyrus Kane.

Inside, we sit with Paige Lewin, and with Kameese Davies, who breaks down Black hair, its growth patterns, and the care it truly deserves. Backroad Gee reflects on what it means to be a Congolese man, through and through. Through a barbering project, three young men open up about grooming, identity, and what it means to look after their hair - and themselves, and much more.

Interviews include: @meduulla @backroadgee @julianakasumu @tyruskane_ @donte.dacosta @doneitagaiin @Paigelewinofficial @Kameesedavis @habkat @buxley__ @ade.oyejobi

This one is for us — past, present, and becoming. For Our Reference is available for preorder on our website now 🔗

Speaking with the entreprenuer meant reflecting on his journey, understanding the importance of networking opportunities and his drive to celebrate Birmingham’s vibrant communities. Evidently, there’s no limit to Buxley’s determination as this is just the beginning for him and Boxout.

In a world that moves at the speed of a scroll, print gives our stories somewhere to stay.

For Black British communities, documenting our culture, creativity and experiences means creating a record of who we are, our achievements and evolving identities. Stories that deserve to be revisited, remembered and passed on.

Our print issues, Staples & Statements (cover stars @victorray and @whereswale) and For Our Reference are part of that ongoing record — celebrating the people, ideas and perspectives shaping Black British culture today. Our stories deserve a place in the archive.

Prominent African and Afro-Francophone artists are openly criticising YouTube for their monetisation policies. According to many sources, the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) excludes multiple African countries, causing creators to earn significantly less than their Western peers.

Artists such as Tiakola (French-Congolese), Himra (Ivorian) and Stonebwoy (Ghanaian) have continuously highlighted the unfairness. Creators from countries like Congo and Ivory Coast are pulling millions of views but receive zero from direct ad revenue, some resulting in changing their base location to be monetised. As of now, only 13 African countries fully integrated into the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) for content monetisation - this includes: South Africa, Nigeria, Senegal, Morocco, Uganda, Egypt, Kenya, Ghana, Tanzania, Tunisia etc.

Sonny Roberts, owner of the UK’s first Black-owned music studio. In 1961, the Jamaican producer launched Planetone - a studio that provided the Caribbean community a music platform during the time of racial disharmony and a tense atmosphere.

Roberts later produced Nkenga’s album Destruction and Judy Boucher’s Can’t Be with You Tonight which reached number two in the U.K. single chart. The producer is hailed for laying the foundation for Black British music and helping Jamaican music become established in Britain. by @theblkbrit
