San Miguel Arcángel
.
Madera tallada, estucada y policromada
Barroco Novohispano
Monasterio de la Visitación, CDMX
.
San Miguel Arcángel, defiéndenos en la batalla;
Que Dios lo reprima, te lo pedimos suplicantes;

Saint Michael the Archangel
.
Carved, gessoed and polychromed wood
Mexican Baroque
Monastery of the Visitation, Mexico City
.
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil;
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
And do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host,
by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits
who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.

Alberto Kalach · 2006
Concreto aparente, acero estructural, cristal, mármol de Monterrey, madera de parota.
.
There is a whale skeleton suspended in the nave. That is not incidental.
.
Kalach designed a megastructure that refuses to pretend books are quiet things. The architecture is entirely tectonic, exposing the mechanics of its own gravity: tension rods in high tension carrying the steel-framed catwalks, translucent glass floors that allow light to drop through the matrix, and suspended, cantilevered book stacks that float like heavy cargo in mid-air. Nothing is masked. The building shows you how it stands up the same way an essay unfolds its argument.

The tropical timber is the one concession to warmth, and it earns its place. The rich wood balustrades and reference benches sit in sharp, deliberate friction against a concrete shell that makes no apology for its density. These materials do not pretend to coexist peacefully; they coexist honestly.

A monument to public literacy in a city that rarely surrenders its square footage so generously. The machine is still running. The doors are still open.

Tlalpan · Mexico City
Built 1637–47.
Baroque novohispano. Basalt, lime, and wood.
Declared a Historic Monument.
.
.
The cloister of San Agustín de las Cuevas is one of those spaces that earns its silence. Built between 1637 and 1647 on the site of an earlier Dominican hospice, the complex absorbed nearly a century of colonial ambition into its walls. Starting from a modest chapel raised around 1532, likely in adobe and volcanic stone, which survives today is just a side chapel dedicated to our lady of the Rosary.
This is New Spanish Baroque in its most structurally honest form: semicircular arches in load-bearing ochre render, squared piers with restrained molding, a viguería ceiling of raw timber beams that hasn’t changed its logic in four hundred years. No surface ornament doing the work that structure should do. The talavera fountain anchoring the garden, the layered arcade rhythm framing it.
It remains a parish. The community is still there. The stone is still doing its job.

“La libertà, quando è accolta con grazia, diventa ospitalità.”

Saint Josephine Bakhita was taken as a child, sold, beaten, renamed, and stripped of her freedom.

But that is not who she became.
When she was finally declared free, she did not build her identity around what had been done to her. She did not live in anger, resentment, or grievance. She chose faith. She chose forgiveness. She chose a quiet, ordinary life of service.
In Italy, she became a Canossian sister, a doorkeeper, a presence of peace. Those who met her remembered not her past, but her serenity.
She did not die a martyr. She lived free.
Not free because suffering ended—but because it no longer ruled her soul.
Saint Josephine Bakhita reminds us that holiness is not always loud, and dignity does not come from power, voice, or vengeance.
Sometimes it looks like an open door, a gentle gaze, and a heart finally at rest.
Santa Giuseppina Bakhita, prega per noi.
