You can have what ever you want to eat…as long as it’s one of these… by @thefishranch

The purple surgeonfish was an unexpected favorite this season. Locally known as Espuelón, a nod to espuelas (the spurs on a rooster), these fish get their name from the sharp, scalpel-like spines at the base of their tails.

With small, soft mouths, they’re not an easy catch on the fly, and getting one to the boat is a surprisingly fun challenge.

Who else has purple surgeonfish on their list?! by @thefishranch

¡¡Vámonos a México!! 🇲🇽

Join me for Women’s Week at The Fish Ranch in Baja California Sur, Mexico! I’m so excited to be returning to The Fish Ranch to host and instruct the 4th Annual Women’s Week, May 9–15, 2027!

Get ready for a week packed with saltwater fishing, fly-fishing instruction, targeting new species, learning new skills, and building confidence on the water. And that’s just the beginning!

We’ll also be soaking up everything that makes this week so special: traditional Mexican cooking classes, art demos, cocktail hours, morning yoga, pool hangs, and all the fun, laughter, and giggles you could ask for.

ALL SKILL LEVELS ARE WELCOME! Whether you’re picking up a fly rod for the very first time or you’re a seasoned angler looking to target new species and sharpen your saltwater skills, there’s something for everyone in this incredible fishery.

My favorite part of Women’s Week has always been watching women learn from one another, try new things, cheer each other on, and leave with so much more than they came for. The fishing is incredible, but the friendships, shared adventures, and memories we make along the way are what make this week truly unforgettable.

I love this trip more than I can put into words, and I can’t wait to share it with you!

Only 6 spots remain, and they won’t last long!

Want all the details? Comment BAJA below, and I’ll send everything straight to your DMs. ¡Nos vemos en Baja! 🇲🇽🎣🌞

Thinking nonstop of our friends in Lopez Mateos right now, from Rosa & family, to Pechocho's, to Sergio & crew. Those of you who have been there know what an incredibly special place this is. Be safe and see you soon! by @thefishranch

Music to our ears.... The countdown is on!! Who knows what this season will hold, but we can't wait to see!! by @thefishranch

Mary Grigsby did not plan to stay. She arrived in La Paz by boat at twenty-two, on the 3 to 5 a.m. shift, watching a ferry cross inside the island in the dark. Something in her went quiet. Years later she came back and made her life in that same bay.

Today she runs @thefishranch , a fly shop and saltwater fly fishing outfitter operating out of La Ventana Bay, Ensenada de Los Muertos and Magdalena Bay. World class fly fishing, yes. But also the genuine connection to a place and its people that keeps guests coming back year after year.

Baja found her through her Aunt Roberta, who adventured down more than sixty years ago, back when the road was dirt. We all need an Aunt Roberta. by @thefishranch

What's an average day fly fishing the Baja like? You tell me. by @thefishranch
