Flow arts live at the intersection of object manipulation, dance, juggling, circus, and play. Here are some of the aesthetic principles we focus on featuring for Flow Show. What do you think distinguishes a flow show act from a dance, juggling, or circus act?

We love skill, but skill isn't the whole act. We're also interested in what happens between the tricks, around the tricks, and because of the tricks.

APPLICATION TIP: Show us a sentence, not just a word. Sentences have beginnings, tone and style, actions, and resolutions. We'd rather see a longer, imperfect stretch of movement that shows how your ideas connect than one perfect trick or a highly edited reel.

Some moments deserve a pause, while others can melt right into the next. Give the audience permission to react, while also knowing you don’t need to punctuate every trick - we love the ease and embodiment of flow.

APPLICATION TIP: Your act doesn't need to be choreographed yet. Show us enough continuous movement that we can see how you inhabit your flow.

In flow arts, the relationship with the prop is part of the movement--the prop isn't just an accessory, nor is it the full story. Its momentum creates movement pathways; tricks create shapes and transitions; the object asks the body to respond. Sometimes you lead the prop. Sometimes the prop leads you.

APPLICATION TIP: We're looking for the raw material that can become a compelling stage piece.

It can be playful. Hypnotic. Weird. Joyful. Tender. Sexy. Funny. Meditative. Unsettling. A story, character, or concept can help. But you don't need any of them. What matters to us is the experience you create for the audience.

APPLICATION TIP: Tell us what you want the audience to feel in your written vision. What kind of world are you inviting us into? Does that feeling stay consistent, evolve, or transform over the course of the piece?

Performing last weekend in the SF Flow Show, alongside a cast of wonderfully talented artists, was a dream come true!!

As we worked to develop this act, we learned and grew together in a way that connected our art and our expression more than we could have imagined. It’s been such a joy to work together and we are incredibly excited that we got the opportunity to showcase our love and friendship and the dedication that we’ve put into this piece.
