⛰️ GGR 2026 Reflection

Grateful for the opportunity to learn alongside coaches and goaltenders from around the world at the 2026 Global Goaltending Retreat.

There are many excellent professional development opportunities out there, but few rival GGR’s depth and authenticity.

This year I was honored to co-facilitate with Justin Goldman @thegoalieguild —a compassionate and masterful designer of emergent learning. Thank you for the opportunity, brother!

A few 🔑 takeaways from this year’s GGR experience:

1️⃣ Learning is messy, dynamic, and non-linear. We coaches would be wise to say less (Goldy). Check our egos, give more space, and become co-designers of the learning environment. Then see what emerges. Creativity can only flow from the subconscious when one is relaxed, without distraction, autonomous, and unafraid.

2️⃣ The deepest kind of motor learning is embodied—it’s felt @hannunyqvist Goalies don’t need constant external feedback from coaches, but opportunities to attune to their own body and mind. Apparently we American goalie coaches can sometimes look like a bunch of distracting cheerleaders on the ice 🙃

3️⃣ There are many movement solutions to any given task. Some skill acquisition requires no tech assistance, while tools such as the KAT @pantherteckat , markerless 3D motion capture (Meg Harrington), and others can illuminate novel insights. Excited to explore where these technologies lead us in skill acquisition, injury prevention, and coaching methods.

4️⃣ Be where your feet are. The art of reduction. These were timely messages, especially coming from @mikevalley29 . Our lives are a collection of nows. The better we can appreciate the here and now, the richer the journey.

5️⃣ Hockey is about people and relationships. Perhaps cliche. But it’s true. GGR is full of passionate individuals who have chosen to influence the world through goaltending. Deep, lifelong kinships continue to form through this retreat. Some have already lasted decades, Luke Venker @3egoaltending . They inspire us to be better coaches, more open-minded people, and to elevate closer to our highest selves.

Grateful for the GGR community, and looking forward to the next one! by @thegoalieguild

Guests & Goalies,

I want to take a moment to thank everyone for an amazing week in Breckenridge. I have been saying it non-stop since Thursday, but even though we had a ton of guests joining the GGR for the first time, it felt like we had been together for many years.

In fact, to preserve the truly special nature of this year’s GGR, I have already decided to take another break in 2027. It worked out perfectly last summer, and I’m confident that this is the right move for many reasons.

New ideas and creative endeavors need time to emerge, and with some really cool international hockey events in Germany and Czechia next May and June, taking 2027 off gives everyone a chance to develop in other awesome environments.

Suffice to say, the 2028 GGR is going to be an absolutely epic 10-year anniversary event, and I’m already looking forward to it! Until then, like I shared in the group chat, stay curious and explore new horizons in life, both professionally and personally.

Remember what each of us left behind on that hike with Mike. Use that special experience to light your path forward. Cherish the connections we created with each other, embrace the kinship, and continue to collaborate, share, and learn.

I cannot say enough good things about the quality of the discussions, the on-ice explorations, the willingness to push through initial frustrations, and how everyone’s understanding of our role as designers is elevating us to new heights.

Have a great summer, reach out at any time, and thanks again for making the 2026 GGR such a memorable and fulfilling life experience! by @thegoalieguild

It’s our final Top 10 Tuesday for 2026, sponsored by The Goalie Guild! All we can say…WOW!! by @thegoalieguild

Eric Woodbeck testing and describing an application of KAT for sled hockey goalies at the 2026 Global Goalie Retreat (GGR) in Breckenridge, CO!

In this case, Eric is wearing the KAT device on his leg so it can detect changes in body orientation. KAT provides instant beeps and vibrations when the wearer replicates a target position. This helps develop awareness and control of proper body alignment when squaring up to the puck and cutting down shooting angles to cover more of the net.

Special thanks to Eric @woody6997 , Justin Goldman @thegoalieguild , and all of the coaches and athletes that made GGR such a special experience! by @thegoalieguild

A trailing glove hand is a tough habit to break, unless you can feel it. Justin’s take: “You feel beeping and vibrating, but when my hand is out in front, no beeping.” Watch how fast he adjusts. @thegoalieguild

Back again for year 4 and 2026 is going to be bigger and better than ever!
October Saves is by far my favourite fundraiser combining my love of goaltending with raising funds for a cause that has affected us all in some form. In 2024 the cause became even closer to me while I fought my own cancer battle. The final piece of that puzzle was a major surgery with a heated chemo wash which landed on the final day of October Saves and Halloween! In 2025 my dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer and thankfully has completed his treatments with excellent results. Both of us are currently cancer free and looking forward to many more clean scans and tests.
Unfortunately not all stories have the same happy endings but through all of the fundraising efforts by the Canadian cancer society, there are new advancements every day. Giving more happy endings to those fighting this awful disease.
This year, I’ve partnered with @thehobbyspot_qcb and will be at their first card show at the new shop. Raising funds and probably spending too much money on more cards. I’ve also got a few more giveaways up my sleeve being announced later today!
Thanks for being apart of Team LJ for another year!
