POSTS STORIES REELS

East London isn’t my haunt, but for @thepeacocke1 in Stepney Green I’ll make an exception. I travel boy.

Some pints, some pubs are so good they’ll make a Guinnfluencer break a 9 month hiatus. Rest assured, pints have been still sunk at record rates, I just haven’t been posting.

Still fairly new under the ownership of London Guinness royalty @bricklayersarms_putney, this old school back street boozer turns out one of the city’s very best pints.

The care and attention that goes into every detail of the pints here tells… thick, creamy, as fresh as you like.

Both the @guinnessgb and @beamishstout are exceptional and you’ll do well to find many better this side of Ireland.

A lovely boozer, full of dark green leather and a vast beer selection. Though why you’d ever veer from the stout is beyond me.

And for those so inclined… tonight they’ve even even got the @oyster.buoys down for that classic stout + oyster pairing. Exceptional oysters from Carlingford, Whitstable and Colchester.

Treat yourself. Get down pronto. Enjoy what is easily in the conversation for London’s best pint.

How’s that Storm Ciarán, you windy auld fecker?

The clocks have turned, the storms are brewing.

Find yourself a proper boozer and a fine pint of stout.

My forecast? A boat load of creamy pints.

Consider this pintman well and truly hunkered down.

It’s late April. It’s 10°C. It is f’ing pissing it down in London. The way I see it, you’ve got two options.

1) You can sit and moan about the terrible weather.

OR

2) You can sit and moan about the terrible weather in the comfort of a cosy boozer, with a pint of plain.

There are few things more enjoyable than settling into one of the many central London pubs that feel like locals.

Carpet, regulars at the bar. And the type of tap selection more akin to an estate boozer than a West End drinking hole.

Foster’s, Strongbow… I’m looking at you lads.

That’s exactly what you get from @theoldcoffeehouse in Soho. Despite being mere yards from the touristy chaos of Carnaby Street.

It feels untouched by the trends that have engulfed many of the pubs in central, and is unashamedly itself.

Bags of character, and for what it’s worth a bloody bit if me.

The perfect refuge from this unseasonably shite weather, with a decent pint of Guinness to boot.

‘Variety is the spice of life’ said the A Level teacher to our impressionable teenage minds. Was he talking about the shtout?

At the time we were all almost certain it meant he was cheating on his wife. The wink didn’t help. The grin sealed the deal.

But all these years later, perhaps he *was* talking about stout.

For the sanctity of marriage - and frankly this post - let’s give him the benefit of the doubt.

Now I love Guinness. It’s my tipple hands down, nine out of 10 times and twice on Sundays.

You might have guessed.

But I really am partial to a Beamish. Enjoy the odd Murphy’s. @oharasbeers Nitro Stout is well worth a go.

I’d frankly sink the odd @islandsedgestout if they were about in the U.K.

So you can believe how delighted I was to find a genuinely excellent stout on my doorstep.

And make no mistake, @anspachhobday’s ‘London Black’ is exactly that.

Very sinkable, and absolutely holds its own against the big stout heavyweights.

I know plenty don’t enjoy the ‘craftier’ taste of some stouts compared to Guinness.

London Black sits closer to Guinness than the likes of O’Hara’s. It still has more of that roasted, coffee flavour than a Guinness, but it’s certainly not overpowering.

A lovely tipple that you can find in select boozers across the U.K.

I opted to sink a good few at ‘The Arch House’, Anspach & Hobday’s tap room in Bermondsey.

If you’re looking for a bit of variety in your life, give it a go. The stout that is.

I bloody love pubs. And it’s hard not to be concerned about what the pub scene might look like in 5-10 years.

Even prior to Covid-19 and the recession, boozers were closing at record rates.

I firmly believe all pub lovers should feel a sense of duty to do their bit and support their locals.

So when the good folk over at @City_Stack told me about their new gift, I was more than happy to help spread the word.

CityStack has been created to support independent pubs, while giving punters a good deal in the current cost of living crisis.

In a nutshell, it’s a £20 stack of beer mats that allows you to get £100 worth of food & drinks at 10 (very good) independent London pubs.

The pubs include the likes of Guinness hot-spots @skenansfreehouse (first pic) and @mcandsonslondon (last pic).

To learn more about how it works, the pubs on the list *and* to purchase your beer mats, head to citystack.co.

What’s more, if you use the code GUINNFLUENCER22 then you’ll get free shipping on your first order.

The Sunday pint is special, isn’t it? There’s an intangible quality that comes with every sip.

It is, without doubt, one of the best pints. And it’s hard to pin down why.

But what’s clearer are the factors that make a good Sunday session.

A great boozer, with great pints.

Bowe’s in Dublin ticks both boxes. A beautiful old pub, inside and out.

Despite its location close to some of the more touristy spots in Temple Bar, it manages to retain a locals feel.

And what’s more, it’s comfortably one of the best pints I’ve had. Dare I say top three of all time.

The pints taste every bit as good as they look. Unbelievable cream - the sort of velvety texture that only comes with pints above a certain temperature.

I’ll be back in Dublin at the end of the year. You best believe I’ll be calling in Bowe’s and settling down for a Sunday session.

There was a time where I genuinely worried for the post-work pint. That most satisfying of sups.

That knowing look from a colleague as the clock strikes 5pm. Or 4.45pm. Ish.

I worried it was something dead and buried.

The latest thing to be met with bemusement when I explain the concept to my hoverboard-flying, space food-eating grandchildren of the future.

The ignorant little fools.

But it seems, slowly - dare I say surely - that this glorious, age old tradition is returning from its pandemic-induced slumber.

There are loads of reasons to enjoy the post-work pint. Namely, it is a pint. Enjoyed post-work.

But for me there’s more to it than that. It’s always felt bigger, more complex than that.

I love the thought that ordinary people like me have enjoyed the very same thing for hundreds (more?) of years.

Ye olde colleagues of yore, shutting their MacBook Pros and heading to the boozer. Or something like that.

And in the City at least, the tradition seems alive and well.

Not least in my ‘work local’ (we all have ‘em, right?)

The Old Doctor Butler’s Head is an excellent little Shepherd Neame pub in the heart of the Square Mile.

A pub that can genuinely lay claim to quenching the thirst of post-work punters for centuries and centuries.

Great staff, and a place that has that intangible ‘pub’ quality. You know what I mean. It’s still a pub. It’s not a bar.

They claim to pour the fastest pint in the City, but fear not, they serve a good Guinness.

The two rarely go together, but theirs are up there with the best pints in the financial district.

So next time the clock strikes 4.45pm, and if you work close by, head down to the @olddoctorbutlers

I might just see you there.

I know what you’re thinking. What better than an "unexpectedly refreshing" stout in this warm weather we’ve been having.

About a year ago, Heineken released their Guinness competitor - Island’s Edge.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m a Guinness man at heart, but I’m always keen to try new things.

Variety is the spice of life or something something.

Truth be told, I was quite excited to try it. I like the odd Murphy’s, love a Beamish.

And I really was intrigued about this "unexpectedly refreshing" business they’ve been peddling.

So when over in Dublin, I gave it a go at Fitzgerald’s Bar.

Thoughts? I didn’t love it. But I didn’t *hate* it mind you.

It hasn’t had the best reception (at least that I’ve seen online), but honestly I thought it was okay.

Could I drink a few pints of it? Sure. But I’m not sure why I ever would. Not when there’s Guinness, Beamish, Murhphy’s - all better in my opinion.

It’s thinner than the aforementioned, with a taste that I can’t quite put my finger on.

Here’s what a Heineken spokesperson said about their stout: “Island’s Edge offers a modern take on stout with a refreshing taste and a progressive attitude.

“The unexpected addition of tea to the stout has resulted in a smoother, creamier, more accessible stout which consumers loved in taste tests.”

Worth a go? Why not. Unexpectedly refreshing? Probably not. Better than Guinness? Definitely not.

Is the Auld Shillelagh London’s best pub for Guinness?

The legendary Irish boozer has earned near-mythical status down the years as the capital’s best pint.

But is it warranted?

I know famous pintmen like @theguinnessguru @beautifulpints @imgrandsure regard it as London’s best.

Perhaps I’ve been unlucky (honestly I’ve only been a handful of times), but in my opinion there are better spots for Guinness in London.

Don’t get me wrong - it’s a great little boozer (deceptively big given its tiny, charming front), and a very, very good pint of Guinness.

Easily one of London’s finest.

I just happen to have had consistently better pints in some other pubs. Emphasis on the word consistency!

I did notice that the quality dipped as it started to get busy, and this has been a theme each time I’ve drunk there. (See one of the later pics as an example).

But being fair, perhaps that’s the case in most places, though?

Overall if you’re into your Guinness, it’s a must-visit in London.

Undoubtedly *one* of the best spots around, but IMO it’s not the head and shoulders front runner that some others consider it.

On a final note, if the pints are creamy and the craic is strong, who cares which pub is ‘the best’?

Ahead of today’s All-Ireland final, thoughts turned to this slice of Croke Park in East London.

Say what you want, but you drink with your eyes first - and a proper glass makes all the difference.

Goes without saying, I’m a tulip man all day and night.

And this pint tasted all the better being served up in an authentic pint glass straight from Croke Park.

You won’t see too many of these out and about in the wild - certainly not in London.

If you’re watching the game today, here’s hoping you can enjoy a few creamy ones ‘n all.
