On behalf of The Hangout Youth CIC, we would like to publicly endorse the #JusticeForJoelle campaign, led by Trans Legal Clinic. We encourage you to visit the Trans Legal Clinic Instagram page to find out how you can donate to the campaign and access a template letter to write to your MP, raising concerns about segregated hospital wards and the impact these have on trans lives. All trans people deserve care, dignity and compassion. Over the next couple of weeks, we will be sharing more ways you can get involved in the campaign across the North. We would also like to share some words from Lou Howell, our Director, about Joelle’s inspiration for The Hangout: Joelle was a dear friend who taught me so much about play, the arts and the importance of being yourself. Her spirit and the way she moved through the world helped shape the very heart of The Hangout, reminding us that creativity, joy and self expression are not luxuries, but things we all deserve. Joelle’s inspiration lives on in the spaces we create, the young people we support and the freedom we strive to make possible. In Joelle’s memory, we stand alongside the Justice for Joelle campaign and everyone working towards a world where trans people can live freely and safely, and access the care they need. We hope to see the NHS admit their systematic failing and negligence against Joelle. Please share the campaign widely. 🏳️‍⚧️🩵🩷🤍 by @thehangoutleeds

Over the coming months, we’ll be working with Leeds LGBTQIA+ communities to uncover and share the stories, experiences, and places that have shaped queer life in our city. The project will create an audio archive of local LGBTQIA+ histories, deliver heritage workshops with young people, and generate paid employment opportunities for LGBTQIA+ people in Leeds.
