Day 31.. The Manchineel tree ☠️🌱

The climax of the spooky season! The incredible little apple of death 🍏 ⚰️

A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they know they shall never sit - unless it's the machineel tree that showers those underneath it with a blistering rain ☔

I hope you have enjoyed this series and thank you so much for joining me for it!

Happy spooky season and happy samhain to all those who celebrate 🎃🕯️🍂

Day 30...Rosary pea ☠️🌱

The penultimate day! 🐞

Knowing how to identify poisonous plants will always be helpful and I hope this series has helped you learn some more about them!

A good example is from back in the 2010's, when a member of staff noticed that The Eden Project was selling jewellery made of the Rosary pea and they weren't the only ones!

36 other retailers had to send out recalls urging customers to return the highly toxic jewellery, thankfully no one was injured!

See you tomorrow for the last day of spooky season 🎃

Day 29...Oleander ☠️🌱

If you're a fan of holidaying in the Mediterranean, especially all inclusives - you'll notice the oleander plant is present everywhere! 🌸

Oleander is toxic to humans, sheep, horses and cattle with just 100g being fatal to horses!

Happy spooky season 🎃

Day 28... Tobacco! ☠️🌱

A polarising one perhaps, but you'll find it in many a poison plant book! 🚬

*cigarette smoke rather than tobacco itself and sources vary on the quantity from 3000-7000

Happy spooky season 🎃

What do you want to see after spooky season? by @thehistoricalherbologist

Day 27...Hawthorn ☠️🌱

The May-day plant that smells like death!

I heard a story once about a Hawthorn tree that was cut down without permission to build a road. That road was then prone to many a car crash so they had to have a priest come and ask for forgiveness from the Hawthorn tree in the middle of the night... And the crashes stopped.

Does anyone else know this story or have I imagined it?!

Happy spooky season! 🎃

Day 26...Brugmansia! ☠️🌱

The last two days have been quite mild, so let's get back to the nitty gritty. I'll let you fill in the blanks for what the other body part was ✂️

Day 25...Wormwood! ☠️🌱

A nice mild one for today's post!

Did you know that Wormwood was mentioned in the Ebers papyrus (a collection of 720 remedies, recipes and spells) from 1550BC! 📜 ⚕️

Day 24... Our guest of honour! The elder tree ☠️🌱

She won't cause death but my gosh does it follow her throughout history with her folklore and superstition.

Rumoured to grow where blood has been spilt and always (always) ask for permission before harvesting or death is said to follow within three days! 🪦 ⚰️

Can't beat a bit of elderberry syrup this time of year though!

Happy spooky season! 🎃

Day 23...Boophone disticha ☠️🌱

Have you heard of this one? Or seen one? I hadn't come across it before but it's absolutely fascinating!

I particularly enjoy the fabulously wavy leaves and the fact it morphs into a tumbleweed and rolls off into the sunset to spread it's seeds!

Happy spooky season 🎃

Day 22...Opium poppy ☠️🌱

Has there ever been a plant to dance such a fine line between helpful and harmful?

Wars have been fought over this plant, it can lead to addiction but it's also an incredible pain relief (morphine).

It's also a lovely garden plant that the bees absolutely adore 🐝

Day 21... Deathcap 🍄‍🟫 ☠️ 🌱

Poetic licence taken again as the deathcap is a fungus rather than a plant.

As 90% of all mushroom deaths are listed as occurring from Amanita phalloides, I'd say it's earnt it's place on the list 👀
