What does it take to create lasting change? It starts from within.

At The Hunger Project, our work centers on Vision, Commitment & Action (VCA), a framework designed to foster local leadership and collective ownership:

👁️ Vision: Imagining what’s possible
🤝 Commitment: Owning the change
🌱 Action: Turning intention into progress

When communities lead the way, progress is built to last.

What is one vision you have for positive change in your community? Share below!

Six countries. One shared table. 🌍

When you cook a recipe from Our Shared Plate, you have the chance to connect with the communities who’ve cooked it for generations, people who are leading the way to a future without hunger.

Choose a dish, make it your own and post a photo of the final result. Tag @TheHungerProject with #OurSharedPlate, and you could be featured on our page!

Self-reliance isn’t about stepping away, it’s about a community stepping into full ownership.

This month, Oruka Epicenter in Nwoya District, Northern Uganda, reached self-reliance! 🇺🇬

After 7 years of partnership with The Hunger Project–Uganda, Oruka’s local institutions are now 100% community-owned and government-backed:

🏥 Oruka Health Center III: Delivering essential care in direct partnership with Nwoya District Local Government.

🌾 NDIMIFA SACCO: A community savings cooperative empowering local farmers to access credit and markets.

👩‍🌾 Local Governance: Women and men equipped to lead, solve challenges, and shape their own development.

When development starts with human agency, lasting change follows.

When communities lead the way, anything is possible. At our 2026 Fall Event, we saw what can happen when we step into a mindset of Wild Possibility—when we stop letting today's conditions define tomorrow's future. Over the course of the evening, we heard from leaders at the heart of our work and celebrated the people all over the world who make it possible.

Thank you for showing up for a world without hunger. Swipe through for highlights, then save the date for next year—October 14, 2027!

Ever tried baking bread out of sweet potatoes? 🍠🍞

In Bissiga, Burkina Faso, orange-fleshed sweet potatoes are being transformed into warm breads, cakes, and pastries. For local leader Pélagie Yaogo, watching younger women master the trade is about far more than baking, it’s about passing the torch.

"What impressed me most was the enthusiasm of the new generation," says Pélagie. "I feel that the next generation is well-prepared."

Swipe to see self-reliance in action. ➡️

In Fô-Bouré, Benin, the women of a local shea collective are creating a world without hunger and poverty, one shea nut at a time.

By engaging in a sustainable shea value chain initiative supported by @thehungerprojectbenin, the women of Fô-Bouré are gaining access to production techniques, better market access, and a cooperative of like-minded women.

Eradicating poverty means creating lasting opportunities, strengthening women's agency, and laying the foundation for a world without hunger.

This World Food Day, we honor the people ending hunger from the ground up.🌎

Over the past 5 years, local leadership, in partnership with The Hunger Project, has trained 38,000+ leaders in food security and equipped 20,000+ people with vital nutrition skills.

Sustainable change happens when power stays in local hands. By strengthening local leadership through training, communities build self-reliance and drive lasting solutions from within.

👥 Tag a local leader who inspires you and discover how to invest in community-led development and self-reliance at the link in bio.

Did you know that the world already produces enough food to nourish everyone?🫑 🥦🥕 🌽🍈 🍉

Yet in 2025, around 645 million people faced hunger, and nearly one in three couldn’t afford a healthy diet.❌

Both come down to access: whether food is within reach, and whether a family can pay for it.

This World Food Day's theme “Innovate today, nourish tomorrow.” is something we regularly see in the communities we work with.💙

In the last five years, The Hunger Project has trained at least 38,000 leaders in Africa, Bangladesh and Mexico in food security practices - skills which they've passed on to their local communities.💪

Food is within reach when it’s grown nearby, and a family can afford it more easily when it grows some of its own. 💙

True partnership with Indigenous communities isn’t about bringing outside answers. It’s about stepping back and letting ancestral wisdom lead. 🌿

In Peru, Maritza and her community of Yánesha artisans founded Sho'llet, named after the Queen of the Colored Snails—the ancestral spirit who guards beauty and sacred territory. Using native seeds and traditional techniques, they are turning ancestral knowledge into economic independence.

Like the Queen of the Colored Snails herself, the women of Sho'llet guard beauty, sacred territory, and knowledge passed down from their mothers and grandmothers.

Real change happens when girls have space to gather, learn, and lead on their own terms.

In rural India, Girls Collectives, facilitated by @TheHungerProjectIndia, are community spaces where adolescent girls learn their legal rights, build self-reliance, and support each other as they pursue higher education.

International Day of the Girl Child is a moment to center the young leaders driving change in their communities.
