@_meating live at The Junction (607 Vancouver St.) Sunday November 15th 7pm - 8:30pm The Meating is a jazz-liminal duo project composed of multi-instrumentalist Marc Micu and electric guitarist Ryan Keating, both based in Victoria, BC. While active in many projects together as bandmates, the duo decided to initiate The Meating over an intense love for jazz, busking and performing across Vancouver Island. Their music attracted a lot of buzz from passers-by, saying that it is “what the city needs” as it complimented the urban cityscape. show by donation (suggested donation $10) by @thejunction607

Victoria’ art establishment is a joke. It has perfected the business of celebrating dissent while ensuring that nobody actually dissents… Commercial property sits empty while artists are herded into cultural ghettos carved from formerly public buildings, their studios parceled out by private interests with the blessing of grant committees and a municipal establishment still without a lobbying registry. The public loses its property. The administrator collects a salary. Membership fees ensure that the very people these spaces supposedly exist to serve can scarcely afford to enter them… And the people presiding over this splendid arrangement? They are hailed as philanthropists, visionaries and community leaders. They have performed the remarkable feat of turning public assets into private authority, artistic poverty into a business model, and the right to make art into an act of personal generosity. Every artist is welcome, provided they fit into the appropriate little box, graciously supplied by a “community-minded developer” and administered by some dipshit with a pension, probably an MFA, and a profound belief in their own importance… Artists are encouraged to challenge power. Just not the power that owns the building, controls the funding or decides who gets a studio. Diversity is indispensable. Solidarity isn’t. The grants keep going to the same people. The bland exhibitions keep opening. The self-congratulation intensifies. Artists leave for Montreal. The same broken system and its champions receive more funding. Another consultation is held. Rinse and repeat. What a splendid arrangement. The language is community. The machinery is patronage. Dependency becomes generosity. Exploitation is sold as stewardship. The artist is expected to be grateful. Arbeit Macht Frei. Work sets you free. The infamous lie above the gates of Auschwitz appears here as an intentional juxtaposition, not an equation of contemporary galleries with industrial murder. It asks how institutions use the language of freedom to disguise the power they hold over others. Artistic courage is easy to celebrate when the art challenges nobody in the room, least of all the system pro by @thejunction607
DRUNK ON VIRTUE The Junction’s opening exhibition, Drunk on Virtue, is a meditation on the moral stories powerful people tell about themselves, and what remains when those stories reveal themselves to be fiction. Beginning on the 25th anniversary of 9/11, the exhibition examines the language of freedom, democracy and liberation used to justify the War on Terror, and the violence that followed. Its second movement turns to Justin Trudeau, political performance and the contradictions of Canadian reconciliation. From the shadowy influence of lobbyists to the dispossession of Appalachian coal miners and First Nations communities, the exhibition considers the distance between the virtue proclaimed by those in power and the consequences experienced by those without it.
