Okay. I promised you the scams. Here's the first one.

We had just disembarked from our seven-day Mediterranean cruise and were planning to take the train into Rome to get to our hotel near the Pantheon.

The problem was that we arrived only to be told that the train was NOT running. In fact it wasn't only NOT running for the day, it was NOT RUNNING for the next two days due to "work on the tracks."

We were told the ONLY other available option for our party of 8 was to pay for private transportation into the city...at €60 per person. 😳 WHAT??

€480 for a driver to get us into Rome to our hotel?? You're joking!

We were told there were no other options.
So I put on my negotiating hat and got the price down to €400 (for those of you calculating here, that's $456.33 USD). 🤮

Fine. We paid it. The driver was actually super knowledgeable (he's a tour guide) — he got us from the port of Civitavecchia to Rome in about an hour, no complaints there.

Guess what we saw on the way to Rome??
TRAINS RUNNING ON THE TRACKS!!!🤦🏼‍♀️

👉🏽Here's where it continues to go sideways.
The historic city center of Rome has restricted traffic zones. Not every vehicle is authorized to drive INTO them...

Our car? It did NOT qualify. And he told us that 10 mins out from our drop point.🫠
So he dropped us at the Tibre River...the river that surrounds the city center. Our hotel, near the Pantheon, was very much on the inside.

So we walked. In 95°F Italian summer heat. With all of our luggage. From the river to the Pantheon.

We paid €400 for the privilege of a scenic riverside drop-off and a sweaty hike we did not ask for and really did not deserve.
We sat on the hotel beds and did not move for twenty minutes. Thank God our hotel had A/C!

The lesson: when booking ANY Rome transfer, ask specifically if your driver has ZTL authorization to enter the city center. Three letters. ZTL. Could have saved us the walking with luggage.

Drop a 🫠 if this would have made your blood pressure rise too — because Donnie's did not come back down until the air conditioned hotel room made it.

(And wait until you hear what happened at DINNER. 👀)

Day 1: Paris, FR

I came for the Soupe à l'oignon française and the views. They did not disappoint.

This is the Basilique du Sacré-Coeur...a staple of old Paris. If you have the stamina to hike up 100+ stairs to the top, you'll get the best views of the city. 10/10!

Bienvenue à Paris!
