➕ UPCOMING EXHIBITION ➕ Paper Weight: Prints and Works on Paper from The Kinsey African American Art & History Collection - opening Saturday, April 11th Context Projects is proud to present ‘Paper Weight: Prints and Works on Paper from The Kinsey African American Art & History Collection’ (@thekinseycollection) - on view April 11 - May 31, 2026. Marking 20 years of The Kinsey African American Art & History Collection’s public work as a traveling exhibition and institutional presence, the exhibition brings together prints and works on paper by Elizabeth Catlett, Radcliffe Bailey, Ernie Barnes, Phoebe Beasley, William Pajaud, Renee Stout, and more. The presentation signals a new phase for the Collection, one that broadens the meaning of stewardship, access, and legacy, marked by an intentional act of circulation. In selecting works to move from the core collection into new hands and homes, the Kinsey family frames transfer as extension. In this sense, legacy is not fixed within a private holding, it is renewed as works enter new collections, and new lineages. ‘Paper Weight’ affirms that Black cultural preservation depends not only on accumulation, but on thoughtful stewardship, shared access, and the many hands that help to hold and carry history forward. ‘Paper Weight’ illuminates the work of The Kinsey Collection as a living project—one shaped by curiosity, commitment, and a sustained belief in the importance of Black art, history, and culture. Many of the works on view hold the traces of relationships, discoveries, and convictions that helped form the collection, while also standing on their own as powerful artworks with continuing relevance in the present. With more than 1,000 pieces of art, @thekinseycollection is the largest private holding of African American art and artifacts. The collection started as a hobby and transformed into a traveling show. @michellemiller29 caught up with Bernard and Shirley Kinsey at their latest exhibition in Houston. by @thekinseycollection
On a beautiful evening in May, we gathered with @hey.lalocal at @the.blackbird.house for a meaningful conversation on art, history, and journalism, moderated by LaMonica Peters. Appreciation to Michele Siqueiros, Kevin Merida, and Kristen Muller for the wonderful partnership, and a big thank you to Blackbird’s founder @simplybridgid and entrepreneurial activist @karimwebb for your support in making the evening possible. Thank you to our community and everyone who joined us for bringing such warmth, engagement, and energy to the room. The evening underscored the power and necessity of journalism, especially local journalism, in telling and preserving our stories. 🎥: @dontwaitcreate by @thekinseycollection

An afternoon of art, history, family, and laughter unfolded at @contextprojects as Dr. Bernard Kinsey and Dr. Shirley Kinsey sat down with their son Dr. @dizgibraltar to discuss the decades-long journey of building the renowned @thekinseycollection. Dr. Shirley spoke on the important of highlighting the triumphs, love, innovation, and resilience within the Black American experience rather than allowing our story to be defined solely by struggle. Dr. Bernard emphasized the importance of knowing and owning our history and lineage, explaining how it can fundamentally change how we see ourselves and move through the world. One of the joys of the afternoon was witnessing the family dynamic. Dr. Khalil would ask a question, Dr. Bernard would answer the question the way he wanted to answer, and Dr. Shirley would gently tap him whenever he wandered too far off course or go on for too long... It made the conversation feel less like a lecture and more like family sharing wisdom with the community. The room was filled with photographers, printers, collectors, painters, and other tastemakers from across the art world, all gathered around a shared appreciation for culture and preservation. The exhibition “Paper Weight: Prints and Works on Paper from The Kinsey African American Art & History Collection” was extended through June 14. Be sure to follow @contextprojects for updates on the closing reception and final programming.
