I’ve been thinking a lot about what’s shaped how I see the world: the experiences, lessons, and values that continue to guide me. Living and working in so many places, both the many cities across the US and the countries abroad, has changed me in ways I couldn’t have planned. Each place, each connection, and each challenge has taught me something new about curiosity, purpose, and growth.

This carousel is a reflection of those lessons: the things that ground me, challenge me, and keep me moving forward.

Growing up in a small town, these flags posted in the cemetery over Memorial Day weekends were a constant. Every year the same expected tradition.

Now I understand what they represent: not just history, but the stability that makes everything else possible.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve tried to make it a point to thank service members when I see them; in the airport, at a food market, out on a walk. A small gesture, that both pushes me but also shows my investment through even a small intentional thank you.

We remember Memorial Day because there are many who invested it all. If you see someone in uniform, take a second to push aside any personal beliefs and thank them for the most valuable investment of all: their time.

One of the funnest but also most relaxing days. All wrapped into one. by @themarcushuels

Reaching 12,000 minutes of meditation on Headspace is definitely a milestone I’m proud of.

Here are a few things meditation has taught me so far:

1. Meditation strengthened my mind–body connection.
When I’m present, I notice my body responds differently.
When I focus while brushing my teeth, they genuinely get cleaner. When I lift weights and stay present with full range of motion, my muscles engage better and I get better results. Regular meditation has helped me train the ability to direct my attention intentionally, and that shows up physically.

2. I can notice thoughts and emotions before getting pulled into them.
Meditation has helped me see the gap between stimulus and response.
That pause Stephen Covey talks about becomes more visible with practice, and that pause changes how I react.

3. Learning how to sit and observe emotions.
One of the biggest shifts for me has been realizing that emotions aren’t problems to solve. They’re part of nature, like waves lapping on the shore. You can’t stop the waves, and peace doesn’t come from trying to.
Meditation has taught me to let go of the desire to stop constant oscillation, and instead sit, watch, and observe. When resistance drops, frustration dissipates.

4. Nearly all of my emotions stem from an inception thought.
This might sound obvious, but we often assume emotions surge out of nowhere.
What I’ve noticed through meditation is that nearly all of my emotions are preceded by a thought, even if it’s fleeting or barely noticeable. Catching that sequence in real time has helped me understand my emotional responses more clearly.

5. Awareness itself is an exercise.
I think we often forget that the mind is like any other muscle or organ. It needs regular exercise to function well, and it also needs rest. When I approach awareness like mental fitness instead of a personal failure, there’s far less frustration and much more patience.

Still learning. Still practicing.

We commonly hear it said: it’s about the journey, not the destination.

But here’s the thing... even at your destination, there are mini-journeys worth taking.

Choosing to take public transit abroad isn’t just how you get around. It’s how you get ahead.

1: You pick up language naturally. Metro signs, announcements, ticket machines - they teach you words in context. You start seeing how some words look similar across languages: Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French. Patterns emerge out in the wild, something no app could show you. You’re learning through association, which makes it stick.

2: You develop real adaptability. Wrong line? Missed your stop? I’ve done this so many times there’s no way to count. You just figure it out on the fly. You’re training problem-solving skills most travelers never build.

3: You find what you weren’t looking for. Taxis or an Uber can take you point to point. Transit takes you through neighborhoods, past daily life, into spontaneous interactions. The memorable stuff - the unforgettable stories - happens in between.

Most travelers choose convenience, and I get it. But choosing discomfort is choosing growth.

What’s the most unexpected thing you’ve discovered on public transit while traveling?

I’ll be in Geneva, Switzerland from November 24–26 for the UN Forum on Business and Human Rights at the United Nations.

If you’re a professional in business, policy, human rights, international development, or global affairs — or if you’ll also be attending the Forum — I’d love to connect while I’m in the city.

Coffee, a walk by the lake, an early dinner — whatever works. These trips always feel more meaningful when I can meet thoughtful people who are doing interesting work in the world.

If you’ll be in Geneva during those dates and want to meet up (either at the conference or outside of it), DM me here.

Looking forward to connecting!

One of the most important aspects of being human, at its core, is expressing creativity and uniqueness — making something that didn’t exist before, but carries a piece of who we are.

I was watching a video recently by @damileearch called “Why Lord of the Rings Architecture Isn’t Just Fantasy… It’s a Warning,” and it reminded me how deeply creativity and resourcefulness are tied to our humanity.

As Dami cites in her video, the Arts and Crafts Movement of the late 19th century was a rebellion against mass production that emerged during the Second Industrial Revolution. William Morris and John Ruskin were among the key voices who inspired the movement’s philosophy — warning that industrialization was stripping away the dignity of craft and severing people from an essential part of their humanity: making things by hand.

To Morris and Ruskin, this wasn’t just an artistic concern — it was a moral one, a warning that the ever march towards efficiency and más production was diminishing an innate creativity and in turn what it means to be human.

Every time I create something — whether it’s a painting, my gym routine, meal prep, or designing a solution for a client — I feel empowered. It strengthens the same personal management and creative vision muscles that I value most.

To me, creativity isn’t only about art; it’s about resourcefulness — about reimagining something from a new point of view, with my own uniqueness stamped on it.

In a world where so many people feel they’re losing their independence and agency to systems beyond their control, maybe finding a creative outlet — something that allows us to reimagine, build, and empower ourselves — is what we all need. To create something of our own, even in small ways, as a reminder of our humanity. by @themarcushuels

We hear often about how important it is to take breaks… but we rarely talk about how measurable that importance actually is.
.
A 40-year Finnish study found that vacations aren’t just good for your mind… they can literally extend your life.
.
Here’s what the Helsinki Businessmen Study revealed about stress, rest, and longevity. The Helsinki Businessmen Study (HBS) offers interesting insights on this.
.
You might not know about this study, so here’s why it’s so valuable:
.
First, it’s considered a life-course study — one of the longest-running follow-up studies in the world. The original cohort of 3,490 executives and businessmen from Helsinki has been followed for nearly 50 years.
.
Second, the study’s focus is unique: it explores how midlife risk factors — stress, workload, and lifestyle — affect health-related quality of life (HRQoL), well-being, cognition, and frailty in old age.
.
Most importantly, a 2018 review found that men who took more frequent vacations had lower 30-year mortality (P = 0.027, which just means that the increased vacation frequency has a statistically measurable impact on the early death factors).
.
In contrast, those who took fewer vacations showed higher early mortality within the intervention group. Researchers linked this primarily to cardiovascular health, suggesting that vacations, or true periods of disconnection, may reduce stress and cortisol levels, improving long-term heart outcomes.
.
It’s a reminder that recovery isn’t indulgence; it’s prevention.
.
Even small, regular breaks — when you truly disconnect — can help protect your health and longevity.
.
Although the HBS cohort included only men, the mechanisms behind stress reduction and cardiovascular protection are likely similar across genders.
