🔔 Morning! Here are TND’s top stories this AM: 1️⃣ Donald Trump Jr is the most influential Trump family member in the transition as the US president-elect builds the most controversial cabinet in modern American history, according to sources with knowledge of his role. Trump, who fiercely prizes loyalty, has long relied on family members for political advice, but which relative has his ear is known to vary. This time, it is Don Jr who has helped cabinet contenders sink or rise to the fore – from championing Senator JD Vance as Trump’s running mate to blocking former secretary of state Mike Pompeo from joining the cabinet, according to the sources. They include donors, personal friends and political allies. 2️⃣ The devastated families of Holly Bowles and Bianca Jones and Australian officials have heaped pressure on Laos authorities to get to the bottom of a mass methanol poisoning tragedy. The Australians, both 19, are among six foreign tourists who died from a suspected methanol poisoning in Laos. The friends from Beaumaris in Melbourne’s south-east had been on holiday in the landlocked South-East Asian nation when they became ill, along with a dozen other tourists in the tourist town of Vang Vieng. They failed to check out at the Nana Backpacker Hostel on November 13 after going to the Jaidee Bar. 3️⃣ Millions of Indians will tune into the Australia-India Test series that began last week – and Australia wants to take full advantage of those viewers as tourism from China lags. A special instalment of Tourism Australia’s Come and Say G’day campaign will run on TV screens across India throughout the five-Test series between the two countries, which began in Perth on Friday, in the hope that Indian tourists can replace Chinese travellers. With up to 50 million Indian cricket fans expected to watch the action, Australian Test cricket captain Pat Cummins stars alongside brand ambassador Ruby the Kangaroo to show off the experiences Australia offers outside of its stadiums. This comes a week after Tourism Australia released a content series in India featuring recently retired Australian cricketer David Warner. Read more via the 🔗 in our bio. by @thenewdaily
🔔 Here are TND's top stories this PM: 1️⃣ Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has denounced the International Criminal Court’s decision to issue arrest warrants for him and his former defence minister Yoav Gallant, calling the ruling “antisemitic”. “Israel rejects with disgust the absurd and false actions levelled against it by ICC,” his office said on Thursday (local time), adding that Netanyahu wouldn’t “give in to pressure” in the defence of Israel’s citizens. The ICC had “lost all legitimacy” with the arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant, Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said. “A dark moment for the International Criminal Court,” Saar said on X, adding that it had issued “absurd orders without authority”. 2️⃣ Medical treatment for more than six million Australians could be affected after the country’s second-largest private hospital operator announced it will terminate contracts with two major private health insurers. Around half of all Australians with private health insurance will lose their cover at 38 of hospitals after Healthscope on Friday it had no choice but to end its contracts with Bupa and Australian Health Services Alliance (AHSA). Healthscope said the two insurers refused to pay a proposed hospital facility fee, which it asserted would help cover the gap between health insurance payouts and the rising cost of hospital care. 3️⃣ US president-elect Donald Trump has named former Florida attorney-general Pam Bondi to as America’s top legal officer, a swift replacement for his former nominee Matt Gaetz. Gaetz, who faced opposition from Senate Republicans, was the subject of a House Ethics Committee probe into allegations of having sex with an underage 17-year-old girl and illicit drug use. He has denied wrongdoing. As opposition to his appointment mounted, the embattled former congressman withdrew from consideration on Thursday (US time). Read more via the 🔗 in our bio. by @thenewdaily

🔔 Morning! Here are TND’s top stories this AM: 1️⃣ US president-elect Donald Trump has been dealt an embarrassing blow after his pick for attorney general bowed to pressure against his nomination. Hardline Republican Matt Gaetz announced on Thursday (US time) he would withdraw his name from consideration, saying his confirmation was becoming a distraction. It comes after days of pushback against Gaetz, who has been the subject of allegations of sexual misconduct against teenagers and illegal drug use. The US House Ethics Committee has been deadlocked on whether to publicly release a report into the allegations against Gaetz. “While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition,” he posted to X. 2️⃣ P&O Cruises and its parent company Carnival Corporation are facing a first-of-its-kind class action lawsuit, which will allege that passengers were subject to predatory lending and incentives to keep gambling. The class action lawsuit, organised by Carter Capner Law, alleges the cruise ship operator plied guests with alcohol, allowed them to gamble beyond their financial means, and illegally held them on board until they paid their debts. Peter Carter, legal practice director at Carter Capner, told The New Daily that consumer protection laws shouldn’t stop applying in international waters. 3️⃣ A British lawyer has become the fifth fatality from a mass drink poisoning in Laos that claimed the life of an Australian teenager. Simone White, 28, from Kent, was among a dozen backpackers who fell ill and were taken to hospital after drinking free shots suspected to have been laced with methanol. She is the latest victim in the apparent mass poisoning following the deaths of Australian Bianca Jones, two Danish women and an American. White, an associate lawyer, was among six people in her travel group who were hospitalised after the free drinks. Read more via the 🔗 in our bio. by @thenewdaily
🔔 Here are TND's top stories this PM: 1️⃣ Australian teenager Bianca Jones has died in a Thailand hospital where she was being treated for suspected methanol poisoning after a holiday in Laos. The 19-year-old Melburnian was holidaying with friend Holly Bowles when they became ill, along with a dozen other tourists in the popular town of Vang Vieng, last week. Jones’ family confirmed her death in a statement to the Herald Sun on Thursday afternoon. “It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the news that our beloved daughter and sister, Bianca Jones, has passed away,” they said. 2️⃣ Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and police have condemned a “brazen” and “disgusting” slew of anti-Israel vandalism across Sydney on Wednesday night. A vehicle was torched, while nine others and three homes were spray-painted with graffiti in a spree in a prominent Jewish area of Sydney’s eastern suburbs. Detective Acting Superintendent Adam Solah said police were called to the burning vehicle in Wellington Street, Woollahra, shortly after midnight. It had been spray-painted with anti-Israeli slogans before being set alight. Fire crews were able to extinguish the blaze, but the car was destroyed. 3️⃣ Three suspected arsonists have been filmed lighting accelerant outside a Melbourne nightclub that was razed by fire in the middle of the night. One of the bumbling offenders can be seen setting alight his own arms and leg as the trio flee the building on Chapel Street, South Yarra. The two-storey LUX Nightclub was engulfed in flames, with about 50 firefighters and 15 fire trucks called to battle the inferno about 1.50am on Thursday. Footage has emerged showing three masked men – who are carrying red jerry cans – entering and leaving the building. As they leave, a video obtained by the Herald Sun shows the men, dressed all in black, frantically pouring accelerant onto the footpath. Read more via the 🔗 in our bio. by @thenewdaily

🔔 Morning! Here are TND’s top stories this AM: 1️⃣ NSW Premier Chris Minns has become personally involved in an eleventh-hour bid to avert a railway strike shutting down Sydney for three days. Further crisis talks will be held on Thursday seeking to keep trains running on Australia’s busiest rail network which moves one million people a day. It comes after a meeting late Wednesday involving the premier and Transport Minister Jo Haylen failed to reach an outcome. Trains from Newcastle to Wollongong and across Sydney are due to lay dormant from Friday morning until Sunday night amid an escalating pay dispute between the NSW government and rail workers. 2️⃣ Consumer and privacy experts say retailers mulling in-store facial recognition technology should reconsider after Bunnings was caught breaching customer privacy. They also warned that more must be done to protect Australian shoppers. This week Carly Kind, the Privacy Commissioner at the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC), found Bunnings had breached the Privacy Act by capturing the faces of every person who entered 63 stores in Victoria and NSW between November 2018 and 2021. 3️⃣ Australians are facing the worst levels of housing affordability on record as soaring property values increasingly price average income earners out of the market, according to new data. Analysis published on Wednesday by ANZ Bank and CoreLogic revealed that it takes 10.6 years of earning the median income and saving 15 per cent of it a year to afford a median deposit. Gross household income has risen 2.8 per cent over the past year, researchers found, but wages are “well below” the 8.5 per cent increase in median dwelling values in the same period. It means only 10 per cent of the housing market is still affordable for households earning median incomes, down from 40 per cent in 2022. No houses are affordable for lower-income families. Read more via the 🔗 in our bio. by @thenewdaily
Research from @finder.au has found that one in six Aussies claim to be underqualified for their current job, with 13 per cent having lied on their resume to secure a role. In a competitive job market it may feel ok to bend the truth to help yourself stand out to recruiters – the process of applying and being rejected is incredibly demoralising. But while unethical, it also doesn’t guarantee success. Based on reporting by Sezen Bakan. #job #resume #cv #jobapplication #jobsearch by @thenewdaily
🔔 Here are TND's top stories this PM: 1️⃣ US president-elect Donald Trump has chosen celebrity doctor Mehmet Oz to run the country’s Centres for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Oz, known as Dr Oz, unsuccessfully ran for the US Senate in 2022. Trump, who endorsed Oz in that race, said the heart surgeon who previously appeared on Oprah Winfrey’s show would work closely with Robert F Kennedy Jr, who has been nominated to lead the Department of Health and Human Services. Trump said the pair would take on “the illness industrial complex, and all the horrible chronic diseases left in its wake” as well as cutting what he called waste and fraud. 2️⃣ An emergency court hearing might be needed to ward off the largest shut-down in recent memory on Australia’s busiest train network. Trains from Newcastle to Wollongong and across Sydney are due to stop from Friday morning until Sunday night amid an escalating pay dispute between the NSW government and drivers. The Labor government had warned commuters about a four-day stoppage. That was reduced to three days on Wednesday, which the Rail, Tram and Bus Union said was due to train officials misreading its initial demands. 3️⃣ A man accused of murdering missing teen Isla Bell has fronted court after human remains were found at a Melbourne rubbish tip. St Kilda East man Marat Ganiev, 53, appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday charged with the 19-year-old’s murder. The teenager’s mother Justine Spokes on Wednesday paid tribute to her “darling daughter”, apologising for being unable to protect her from the “cruel world”. “Cherished forever and suffering no more,” she told media. Read more via the 🔗 in our bio. by @thenewdaily
