Our Festival Coordinator and Community Engagement lead, Olayinka, sat down with @WJZTV (CBS Baltimore) to share the story behind the Nigerian American Festival, why this celebration matters, and what attendees can experience through music, cultural performances, food, and more. The festival is about more than a weekend of entertainment. It’s about celebrating our heritage, sharing our culture, and creating connections across communities. 🎥 Watch the interview and get a glimpse into the story behind the festival! #NigerianAmericanFestival #NigerianHeritageMonth #NigerianCulture #DMVEvents by @thenigeriancenter
Thank you, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr., for your warm Nigerian Heritage Month greeting and for championing this historic recognition. We’re grateful for your leadership in celebrating Nigerian heritage as an important part of America’s story. by @thenigeriancenter
Happy Nigerian Heritage Month! Nigerian heritage is American heritage. The story of Nigeria and the United States is about more than recent immigration. It is a shared history, one that includes Black Americans whose ancestry reaches back to Nigeria, and generations of Nigerians and Nigerian Americans who have helped shape this country. Our six-minute video reflects on the connections between the Civil Rights Movement and the leadership vision of Nigeria’s founding generation. It also celebrates the lasting contributions Nigerians and Nigerian Americans continue to make across every field of American life. This month, we honor the history we share, the communities that carry it forward, and the possibilities we can build together. Watch, reflect, and celebrate with us. The Nigerian Center is proud to advance national recognition of Nigerian heritage and strengthen the partnership between Nigeria and the United States. Nigerian heritage is American heritage. Happy Nigerian Heritage Month! by @thenigeriancenter
Today is Election Day! Our communities deserve to be heard, represented, and considered in the decisions that shape our lives. For Black immigrants and the broader Black community, voting is an opportunity to stand up for the issues that affect us, advocate for our families, and elect leaders who understand and represent our communities. Our voices matter. Our votes matter. And our participation matters. If you are eligible to vote, don't sit this one out. Make your voice count. Get out and vote today! #ElectionDay #BlackImmigrants #YourVoteMatters #NigerianCenter by @thenigeriancenter
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Nigerian Center is heartbroken by the killing of 15-year-old Javits Frimpong, a Ghanaian immigrant shot while walking to school in the Bronx. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, his friends, his classmates, and the entire Ghanaian American community. Javits should be alive today. He was a child walking to school, which every family should be able to take for granted. His death is a loss for his family and for every immigrant family that came to this country hoping their children would be safe and able to thrive. 🔗 Link in bio to read the full press release by @thenigeriancenter

What connects you to Nigeria? 🇳🇬 Being Nigerian American means more than where you were born or the parents who raised you. It can also mean discovering the ancestry, history, and heritage that connect you to Nigeria across generations. At the Nigerian Center, we recognize that the Nigerian American story includes African Americans tracing their lineage back to Nigeria and reconnecting with a heritage that has endured across time and distance. At our Nigerian American Festival, we asked some African American attendees to share their connections to Nigeria, while our director, @gbenga_iam reflected on what it means to belong to this broader community. Because heritage connects us in more ways than one. #NigerianAmericanFestival #AfricanAncestry #NigerianHeritage #NigerianCenter by @thenigeriancenter
