Mary-Brenda Akoda took us through the thinking behind
GenScan MRI, her award-winning innovation that could cut MRI scan times by up to 90% and hospitals wouldn’t need to buy new MRI machines.

How does it work? What could shorter MRI scans mean for patients? How could hospitals put it to use?

There was plenty to explore as healthcare professionals, researchers, students and technology enthusiast met the 2026 winner of The Nigeria Prize for Science and Innovation at Vibranium Valley, Lagos.

For us at The Nigeria Prizes, this was a chance to go beyond the winning moment and get into the work itself, with Mary-Brenda there to explain the science and discuss its potentials with the people who would use it.

Here are highlights from the engagement.

Still reliving last night.

From 223 entries in Literature, 98 entries in Creative Arts, and 237 entries in Science and Innovation, last night, three powerful stories of Nigerian excellence emerged.

A poet who gave voice to the vanished. Two filmmakers who took us to forgotten shores and masked histories. A young scientist making healthcare smarter.

Congratulations once again to Ogaga Ifowodo, Peter Oghenetega Oke, Feranmi Abiola, and Mary-Brenda Akoda.
