From #ThePrintCenterGalleryStore: Consuelo G. Flores is a playwright, poet, visual artist and prolific altarista who has made Día de los Muertos celebrations of life for prominent cultural centers, museums and universities throughout the US. Her work advocates for Mexican and Chicana/o cultural traditions as socially and politically meaningful. Her Día de los Muertos work has been noted by scholars, and national media outlets including the Associated Press, LA Times and NPR. Flores is an educator, lecturer and workshop leader on traditional and contemporary Mexican and Mexican-American celebrations.
•
@consuelog.flores created this print to commemorate Self Help Graphic & Art's 2026 Día de los Muertos celebration. Flores said, “The focus of this print is on the children featured and the potential that was lost when they died in the hands of Border Patrol custody. This is a call back and reminder to our immigrant past, of the many transplants from other countries, of my own siblings who entered this country as children.”
•
Purchase of this print directly supports @shg1970's Día de los Muertos events in Los Angeles, which is the longest running public commemoration of its kind in the country, and will sustain their arts and cultural programming.
•
Consuelo G. Flores's "Monarchs and Migration: Children at the Border of Freedom," is a screenprint, 26 ½” x 20”, in an edition of 50, available for $650.

September is prime Pennsylvania weather. And while art is always in season, we’ve entered peak art-viewing season here on the East Coast. Yesterday, I went to NYC to preview The Armory Show (expect a round-up soon). The upcoming Duchamp retrospective opens at the @philamuseumart on October 10, 2026, and @collectivefutures.info , a six-week citywide project activating Philadelphia’s network of artist-run spaces, begins October 2, 2026. There is no shortage of art to see. You can view more upcoming exhibitions on @phillyartmap .

I’ve begun a new tradition of taking long walks on Fridays. This past week I picked up a copy of The Brooklyn Rail from Locks Gallery and strolled through Washington Square Park, where preschoolers held hands and jumped with excitement as an airplane flew overhead. Despite the doomscroll media narrative, I don’t think the world is ending. And if it is, it’s been ending for a very long time. Can we sit in the darkness? In the preface to Black Paper: Writing in a Dark Time (2021), Teju Cole writes that he “sought out the help of photographers, poets, painters, composers, translators, voyagers, mourners, and mentors to apprehend the wisdom latent in the dark.” As Thomas J. Millay writes in the LARB about Cole’s book, “darkness is not a void, but a luminous place, a place of revelation. Darkness calls forth the urgent use of the senses.” In making this round-up, I noticed that each of the following six exhibitions, in some ways, works with darkness. —EEL

Swipe through and read about six standout exhibitions in Philadelphia this September and October 2026.

Please join us next Thursday, September 10th as we open a new exhibition with Philly-based photographer, @rontarver! “Ron Tarver: The Long Ride Home, Black Cowboys in America” features photographs made in the 1990s, challenging the whitewashed myth of the all-American cowboy and deconstructing ideas of Black identity. The images offer testimony to the lived experiences of a thriving community, offering insightful glimpses into the lives of Black people embodying their Western cultural heritage. “The Long Ride Home” will celebrate the beauty, romance and the majesty of the Black West.
