The UK’s first anonymous domestic abuse data platform
Not reporting shouldn’t mean disappearing from the data.
Anonymous by design.

POSTS STORIES REELS

Domestic abuse statistics are often treated as a reflection of the problem. The reality is that they only reflect what gets reported.

Many people never tell the police, a support service, a healthcare professional or anyone else what happened to them. There are countless reasons why.

The result is that some of the most widely used statistics on domestic abuse are based on an incomplete picture.

The Real Count was created to help better understand what isn’t being captured elsewhere.

If you have experienced domestic abuse, you can take part anonymously in less than 90 seconds.

No names. No personal details. No registration required.

This isn’t just our announcement. It’s yours too.

On Monday, The Real Count UK becomes a National Pilot.

With academic support from @kimheyes_ at Manchester Metropolitan University, survivors across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will finally have the opportunity to anonymously add their voice to something bigger.

Because every story matters.
Even the ones that were never reported. by @therealcountuk

Success, money, a career or financial independence do not make someone immune to domestic abuse.

Domestic abuse doesn’t discriminate. So why does the data?

The Real Count UK is counting what official figures can miss, take part today at therealcount.org by @therealcountuk

Meet Loyce Nagawa, our newest ambassador for The Real Count UK.

Loyce understands why anonymity matters, why fear keeps so many people silent, and why abuse must still be counted even when someone never reports it, tells nobody, or feels let down after coming forward.

We’re proud to have Loyce standing with us as we continue building an anonymous by design way for people to share what happened and help show the true scale of domestic abuse across the UK.

Welcome to The Real Count UK, Loyce!

Domestic abuse has no upper age limit. Neither should being seen, heard and counted. The Real Count UK, England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. 90 seconds, Link in bio. by @therealcountuk

We started with regional pilots in Merseyside and Greater Manchester and are now running nationally, working with Dr @kimheyes_ at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Still lots of work to do, this is really just the beginning🗣️🇬🇧

Not reporting domestic abuse shouldn’t mean disappearing from the data. We’re changing that, in 90 seconds.

Domestic abuse statistics have a blind spot: the people who never report. So we created @therealcountuk

The Real Count UK is an independent nonprofit organisation collecting anonymous data about domestic abuse, including abuse that was never reported to the police or other services.

Our survey takes around 90 seconds. We don’t ask for names, addresses or contact details. People tell us what happened, where the abuse was connected to and whether they reported it. by @therealcountuk

“Why didn’t you just report it?”

I did.

I reported being forced into a surgical abortion at 4 months pregnant, and it was described to me as a “disagreement with strong emotions” and a “difference in opinions.”

I reported domestic abuse, yet instead of focusing on the evidence and what I had experienced, a passing comment I made about describing myself as “mute” as a child was used to question my credibility, despite me never claiming to have a formal diagnosis of mutism.

I reported hacking attempts, and despite a login location that was consistent with where my abuser resides, I was told it “could be anyone.. it’s a big area”.

These are just some of my experiences after doing exactly what survivors are told to do: report.

So when people ask survivors, “Why didn’t you go to the police?”, sometimes the better question is:

What happens when we do?

Reporting abuse should not mean having to repeatedly prove that you are credible enough, traumatised enough or “perfect” enough to deserve to be believed.

Survivors deserve to be heard. Evidence deserves to be properly investigated. Abuse deserves to be taken seriously.

Because the problem isn’t always that survivors don’t report.

Sometimes, the problem is what happens after they do.
