POSTS STORIES REELS

Gene Dunlap “It’s Just the Way I Feel”, 1981

Mr. Dunlaps solo debut is really something special! It’s jazzy, funky and loaded with soul! And it’s featuring The Ridgeways, a marvellous vocal trio consisting of Esther, Gloria and Gracie Ridgeway, three sisters from Detroit.

I just some peoples music and Herbie is one of those guys! He’s got that special touch and curiosity that I love and admire. I’m far from having a complete collection of this man’s music but I’m getting there… eventually. Meanwhile, I’m enjoying the ones I’ve got so far.

Jean Carn “Sweet and Wonderful”, 1981

Since her breakup with former husband Doug Carn, Jean took a turn and moved in a more soul-ish direction. This is her fourth solo album.

Melba Moore “What A Woman Needs”, 1981

Melba’s fourteenth album is a real disco banger. Gene McFadden and John Whitehead produced most of it and the legendary Patrick Adams is in on a few tracks as the arranger. Kashif, Lillo, George McRae and the ladies Benton, Ingram and Benson are some of the background singers. This is gold!

Earth Wind and Fire “S/T”, 1971

Earth Wind & Fire was founded in Chicago by Maurice White in 1969, having grown out of a previous band known as the Salty Peppers.
In 1970 they landed a record deal with the big and by then prominent Warner Bros.

”Earth Wind and Fire” is the self-titled debut studio album, released in February 1971.

If you like EW&F when they play songs like ”September” and ”Boogie Wonderland” then it’s not obvious that their early records (like this one) are for you.
Not because the mentioned songs are bad in any way, but rather because early EW&F is something completely different! It’s raw and unpolished funk!

I have many times asked myself which is the group’s best record and most often this debut will be the answer. These are great songs all written by Maurice White, Don Whitehead and Wade Flemons! Such amazing songs they are!

The 3 Pieces “Vibes of Truth”, 1975

The 3 Pieces was Washington D.C. based soul/jazz/funk band consisting of... three members. They were Andre Richardson (congas, percussion), Lincoln Ross (keyboards, trombone) who was later a member of the Go Go band Static Disruptors and finally Jerry Wilder (bass, lead vocals) and he was later in Chuck Brown and the Soul Searcers.

The 3 Pieces never released more than this, their only album ”Vibes of Truth” from 1975. But what an album it is!
Produced by maestro Donald Byrd with some help from Wade Marcus, you can tell it’s all about quality. And that’s also exactly what it is. Both songs, musicians and production are top class. Amazing really!

Eight of the nine songs are written by the band and the only cover is ”Shortnin’ Bread, an old blues song from the 1920s arranged in an absolutely brilliant rendition!

The music and perhaps mainly the production is heavily influenced by Larry and Fonce Mizell’s way of making this kind of music. It’s not really strange at all because Byrd was working with the Mizell brothers at the same time and had his own music produced by them.

Anyway, if you’re looking for melodious soul-drenched jazz funk, then ”Vibes of Truth” is the one to get. Pure Magic!

Stephanie Mills “Stephanie”, 1981

On this, Stephanie’s fifth solo album, James Mtume and Reggie Lucas was contracted as producers and they also co-wrote most of the tracks. By that information, you can tell it’s great quality on this fine record!

Donald Byrd ”Caricatures”, 1976

The other day I sat down and went through all the records I have in my collection where the Mizell brothers were involved as musicians, arrangers, songwriters and/or producers. At the moment of writing this, I have almost all of them, which makes me enormously happy and satisfied.
I tried, to the fullest extent, to rank them even though I already understood in advance that it would be an impossible task. It is simply impossible!

Of all the records the Mizells have been a part of, the one I had on the turntable spinning in the background was Donald Byrd’s last collaboration with the brothers and also his last album for Blue Note - ”Caricatures” from 1976.

Right then it was close at hand to vote it as the best album with the Mizell’s involvement. However, I realized pretty soon that it wasn’t that simple even though this is a truly worthy end to a very long collaboration with probably the greatest jazz label in history and also a magical collaboration with Larry and Fonce Mizell!

It’s no wonder this is a big album because with musicians like Alphonse Mouzon, Harvey Mason, Patrice Rushen, David T. Walker, James Jamerson and Skip Scarborough, it just can’t go wrong! To understand what magic means, it is completely clear when you listen to this album!

Change ”Change of Heart”, 1984

This could very well be the third best album by this band. There had been some changes in the setting of the band and one big reason this is killer album for me is that it’s produced and mainly written by the geniuses Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis!
Not much left of the initial Italian identity on this one.

Leroy Hutson ”Feel the Spirit”, 1976

He got a big opportunity by replacing Curtis Mayfield as the lead singer with The Impressions. However, there was more to it and eventually he went solo and the world got to know his exceptional feeling for writing soul songs and he could also produce.
”Feel the Spirit” is his fourth solo album and it’s a real banger, even his best perhaps!
This album is absolutely brilliant!!!

Astrud is working with maestro Gil Evans and the fabulous Creed Taylor and the result is nothing but beautiful!
