Without Led Zeppelin, rock music as we know it would sound very different by @therockpub

I heard Led Zeppelin from our own stage long before I heard the records. The house bands at The Rock Pub were playing them long before I really sat down with the albums. And that's when I understood what I'd been hearing all along.

Everyone knows "Stairway to Heaven" and "Rock and Roll." But there's so much more to this band than the two songs everyone plays.

"Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" is the one I never skip. It's a folk song by Anne Bredon that Jimmy Page heard on a Joan Baez record, and on their first album in 1969 they turned it into something else entirely: beauty, sadness and aggression in one song. It's the map for everything they would become.

Singers, guitarists, bassists, drummers: every person on a rock stage learned something from this band. In 2016, Rolling Stone named John Bonham the greatest drummer of all time.

Led Zeppelin IV turns 55 this Sunday, and for me it's a perfect record. No title, no name on the cover, just four symbols. Bonham's drums on "When the Levee Breaks" were recorded in a stairwell. Thirty-seven million copies.

When Bonham died in 1980, they ended the band. Twenty-seven years later they played one reunion night in London with his son on drums and drew 20 million ticket requests, a Guinness World Record.

Without them, rock wouldn't sound the same. The songs I first heard on our stage are still being played on it.

Mundee play Led Zeppelin at The Rock Pub every Tuesday this November, starting tonight.

"Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" จากอัลบั้มแรกของ Led Zeppelin ในปี 1969 เป็นหนึ่งในเพลงของวงที่ผมชอบมากที่สุด

1979" is one of my favourite songs and music videos of all time. It will stay with me forever. by @therockpub

Weekends in my bedroom in the 90s, one album on repeat — over and over and over.

Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness came out in October 1995. Twenty-eight songs, over two hours, a double album — and it still went to number one and went Diamond. It turns 31 this month.

"Tonight, Tonight" is the song that hooked me and never let go. Its video was built on a silent film from 1902, A Trip to the Moon, and won Video of the Year at the 1996 MTV VMAs.

"1979" is one of my favourite songs and music videos of all time. It will stay with me forever. That same night it won Best Alternative Video — the band went home with seven awards.

They formed in Chicago in 1988 and broke up in 2000. In 2005, Billy Corgan took out full-page newspaper ads to announce he was bringing them back. James Iha returned in 2018. Thirteen albums and 30 million sold later, they're still here.

They played Thailand in 1996. I was 12. Twenty-nine years later they came back to Union Hall on 1 October 2025, with three of the original four — and this time I was old enough.

If you're new to them, start with Siamese Dream, 1993. Yes, Siamese. No, not our Siam. It's the best place to begin.
