📆 As we enter the final weeks of the year, it seems like a good time to reflect on what has happened in 2025! From securing stronger protections for oceanic sharks, to supporting the flatsharks of the Mediterranean, to powering citizen science across the globe - this year has been packed with progress 📈 In 2025, together we’ve: 📃 Influenced international fisheries policy 💪 Strengthened protections for threatened species 🦈 Created safe handling and release guides 👨‍🏫 Engaged thousands of people through citizen science and community engagement Every pledge, sighting, donation and share is helping us turn the tide for sharks and rays🌊 From all of us at the Shark Trust, THANK YOU for being a part of it!💙 #SharkConservation #SharkTrust #2025 #OceanOptimism #Success by @thesharktrust
FACT: The global abundance of oceanic sharks and rays has declined 71% over the last 50 years, primarily due to overfishing. Many of our best-known and much-loved sharks make their home on the high seas, the open ocean beyond national borders. In our shared ocean, these oceanic sharks and rays face a very real threat from a huge international fleet of industrial-scale fishing vessels. The Big Shark Pledge is at the heart of our ambitious campaign. By adding your voice we can build one of the biggest campaigning communities in the history of shark conservation. To put pressure on governments and fisheries. And make the positive changes required to safeguard these awesome sharks. Take action today by heading to www.big shark pledge.org to sign the pledge. #bigsharkpledge #shark #sharkconservation #sharks #hammerheadshark #oceanicshark #mantaray #nature #sealife #marinelife #seacreatures #marineconservation #savesharks #sharkdiving #sharklife #sharklover #sharkconservation #sharklove by @thesharktrust

🦈 Happy World Basking Shark Day! Basking Sharks are the second-largest fish in the world, but these gentle giants feed on some of the ocean’s smallest inhabitants: plankton (like the character in Spongebob) Once heavily fished, Basking Sharks are now protected in UK waters, on Appendix II of CITES, and have a number of international protections. But they remain Endangered, and continued research and monitoring are vital to their future. 🦈Happy International Ghost Shark Day! 👻 Ghost sharks are also known as spookfish or chimaera (after a mythical monstrous fire-breathing hybrid composed of parts from other animals!). So, it’s fitting we celebrate them just before Halloween. These strange-looking relatives of sharks are usually found in the deeper parts of our ocean, meaning they're rarely seen, hard to study, and absolutely fascinating. Worldwide there are around 50 species of chimaera. In UK and Irish waters 8 species have been recorded. Head to our new website to find out more about these spookily-named relatives of sharks and rays in our fantastic new Discover Sharks section. by @thesharktrust

You can now take part in the Great Eggcase Hunt from the comfort of your own home, thanks to our newly developed Community Verification Platform! The Community Verification Platform can be accessed using the online Recording Hub (recording.sharktrust.org) or in the Shark Trust App! On this new platform, you can help check the location, species, and number of eggcases for records submitted by other Great Eggcase Hunt users. But don’t worry, it’s not all on you - records aren’t approved until multiple people agree on the same ID. And, if you’re not sure, you can always skip the record. Using the Community Verification Platform will also help you level up your ID skills, with links to the Great Eggcase Hunt resources to help you along the way, as well as experience points up for grabs (including bonuses for correct identifications). Let’s see who can make it to the top of the leaderboard! To get started in the app, go to Projects → Great Eggcase Hunt → Community Verification Platform → Verify Records. We extend our thanks to @beaseachanger for funding the development of this platform and featuring it on the app was made possible thanks to #NationalLottery. Visit the Recording Hub or the Shark Trust App to start verifying today! by @thesharktrust
🦈 Harriet’s Citizen Science Submission of the Month! Meet Harriet, our data extraordinaire! She sees every single record you submit to our citizen science projects. Now, each month, she’ll be picking a favourite to share with you. This month features a lovely Nursehound, spotted by Kaleb Atherton while diving in Tenby and submitted to Shark Log. Did you know? Nursehounds have quite a few names to choose from! They are also often called: Greater-Spotted Catshark, Greater-Spotted Dogfish and Bull Huss. Thank you, Kaleb, and everyone who shares their discoveries with us. From shark sightings to eggcase finds, your records help us learn more about sharks, skates and rays. Submit yours at recording.sharktrust.org or through the Shark Trust App. Next month, Harriet could be sharing your find! 👀 by @thesharktrust
