I thought it was time to properly introduce myself.

I’m Milena, owner and principal designer of The Whistling Well.

My path to this studio has taken me through architecture, retail design, living and studying abroad, KonMari®, making, art, and a lot of curiosity about the relationship between people and the places they call home.

All of those experiences have shaped how I see and how I design.

I’m glad to share a little more of that story here.

$A Room to Restore Natural light, layered textures, and greenery bring a sense of calm to this sun room. From the green architectural detailing to the tactile materials and connection to the garden, each element contributes to a room that invites us to slow down and stay a little longer. At The Whistling Well, we believe the spaces we inhabit shape how we live. A Room of One’s Own

A gut renovation is an opportunity to reconsider not only how a home functions, but how it supports the people living within it.

In this home, we made room for a personal workspace dedicated to thought and creativity. Art, color, and collected objects bring individuality to a space designed for focus, inspiration, and the pleasure of having a place of one's own.

$A soaring ceiling above, an intimate living area below. The interplay of scale, proportion, and architectural elements creates spaces that feel distinct yet connected. A home can offer both intimacy and openness, without sacrificing either. \#TheWhistlingWell #InteriorArchitecture #ResidentialDesign #ThoughtfulInteriors #ArchitecturalDesign #HudsonValleyInteriorDesign #WestchesterInteriorDesign #NYInteriorDesigner #NJInteriorDesigner #CTInteriorDesigner by @thewhistlingwell$

Everyday Harmony

The warmth of natural wood, the rhythm of vertical tile, and the playful character of terrazzo create a considered balance of texture, pattern, and proportion.

In a kitchen, these materials become part of daily life. The surfaces we touch, the cabinets we open, and the details we encounter as we prepare a meal or reach for a morning cup of coffee.

As principal designer at The Whistling Well, I take on the responsibility to create and reimagine spaces that serve in a meaningful way.

To thrive in that creative work, I dedicate a few hours each week to making and working with my hands.

Ceramics and fiber crafts engage my mind differently.

The repetitive hand motions, the tactile information, the slow nature of building through hand-eye coordination—all of these allow explorations of design and function to become more intuitive.

In this creative flow, thinking and making are no longer separate activities.

The Finnish architect and theorist Juhani Pallasmaa wrote about the relationship between the hand and the mind.

In "The Thinking Hand", Pallasmaa explores how the hand is more than a mechanical instrument. It participates in thought, bridging the imagining mind and the physical world.

I recognize this in my own practice.

Working with my hands is not separate from my work in architecture and interior design. It is one of the ways I continue to develop it.

What changes when two rooms connect?

At our Grand Pianist Residence in Briarcliff Manor, a low stone wall separated the Family Room from the Garden Room.

By removing the wall and reconsidering the furniture layout, we created a more natural connection between the spaces while preserving the original stonework and columns.

The goal wasn't simply to open up the floor plan. It was to allow movement, views, and daily life to flow more naturally between two distinct rooms.

Sometimes, a thoughtful change in layout can transform how a home is experienced.

This millwork was designed around the things our clients wanted to live with.

Books, art, ceramics, and objects collected over time will all have a place here. As the millwork moved from fabrication to installation, color became part of the design as well.

We chose a color that gives the millwork a presence of its own and feels joyful to our client.

Our young client knew what she wanted.

A magical room. Bright, but with lots of blue.

And she gave us a drawing.

We turned that drawing into the mural behind her bed, making something she created part of the room she would call her own.

A child’s room should feel like it belongs to them. Not just a room designed for them, but one shaped by who they are.

Drawn by her. Inspired by her. Made for her.

Becoming a KonMari® Consultant changed the way I think about design.

Not because I believe every home should be perfectly tidy. Mine certainly isn’t.

It changed the questions I ask.

What matters to our clients? What do they want more of in their daily lives? What deserves space? Where does life feel more difficult than it needs to?

Those questions can tell us a great deal about what a home needs to support.

In our latest Design Note, I explore where the KonMari Method® and design naturally meet.

Benefits of the KonMari Method® in Home Design — now on the website.

Every project at The Whistling Well begins with a two-hour consultation in our clients’ home.

We spend that time understanding how the home works today—and how our clients actually live within it.

We observe how they move through the space, where they gather and rest, how natural light changes throughout the day, what they need to store, and where daily life creates friction.

At the same time, we look at the project practically: the existing conditions, priorities, scope, budget, timeline, and what may be possible within them.

After the consultation, we take everything we have learned and develop a written design deck outlining the scope, opportunities, and recommended next steps.

For some of our clients, that becomes the foundation for a larger renovation or design project. For others, it provides the clarity and direction they need to move forward independently.

Before we determine what to change, we first need to understand what the home and the people living within it, need.

Ash appears in nearly every room of our East Side Residence.

We first introduced it for its strength, natural warmth, and expressive grain. Its light tone allowed us to use wood extensively without weighing down the apartment visually.

From there, ash became a material we returned to throughout the home—forming the entry screen, perimeter millwork, radiator covers, storage, bar, desks, bathroom cabinetry, and a window seat.

The applications change from room to room, responding to different needs, while the material creates a quiet sense of continuity throughout the home.

One material, many functions, one connected language.
