POSTS STORIES REELS

Earlier this year I put my creative writing hat on and took part in East Riding Libraries’ Climate Storytelling Project, facilitated by Robin Lyons of @ergontheatre and local author @alanraw

The project brought together 7 local residents – most of us strangers. Over several months we shared our fears and hopes for our local environment, slowly crafting them into stories. We were given an invitation to write in whatever way we felt best, which led to pieces that span poetry and playwriting, drama and comedy, monologues and memoir. There’s even a children’s story.

The result is Sowing Sounds, an audio piece that explores our changing environment through many perspectives.

You can be among the first to hear it by coming to our listening event at Beverley Library on Thursday 12 November. Afterwards there’ll be an open conversation about the environmental challenges facing our area and what we can all do about them. It’s free to come but space is limited, so you’ll need to book. Hope to see you there!

What’s your favourite book? And have you ever taken it for a walk?

In the latest edition of The Writer’s Walk I share an experiment I’ve been trying over the last couple of years to see which types of books boost my walks and inspiration, and which ones bog me down.

Here are a just a few of my sources of inspiration:

The Poetry Pharmacy in York, which has a shelf dedicated to books on walking cures
@poetry_pharmacy_

Lemn Sissay’s let the light pour in – a lovely and hopeful book of short poems that are perfect for dipping into on a walk
@sissaylemn

Annabel Streets’ The Walking Cure, which explores the curative effects of walking in different landscapes
@annabelabbs

The 2026 Seasonal Almanac by Lia Leendertz which is transforming my knowledge and appreciation of the seasons
@lia_leendertz

A Philosopy of Walking by Frédéric Gros, which is helping me think about my walking practice by learning about what walking meant to writers and philosophers

Essentials by David Whyte, and reading poems that relate to the landscape I’m walking in, which is a particularly powerful experience

Here’s a hat tip to the team that clearly had fun creating this sign at Abbey Road DLR station.

“Passengers will need a ticket to ride.”

Image description:
A Transport for London information sign at Abbey Road DLR station that uses Beatles song titles to explain that visitors hoping to find the famous zebra crossing at Abbey Road are in the wrong place. The sign reads:

“Day tripper looking for the Beatles zebra crossing?
Feel like you’ve been here there and everywhere and on a magical mystery tour? Then don’t pass me by.

Unfortunately you are at the wrong Abbey Road. However we can work it out and help you get back to the correct location.

So let’s come together and take the DLR one stop to West Ham and change to a Jubilee line train to St John’s Wood station. Passengers will need a ticket to ride.” by @thewriterswalk

Walking with Will Slater, copywriter

What do a hidden trig point, a mysterious boulder and a naked man on a staircase have in common?

It might sound like the setup for a TV crime drama, but they all feature in my latest interview with fellow copywriter, Will Slater.

During our walk n talk, Will shared the lessons he learned as a photographer that also apply to copywriting, the difference in focus between copywriting and fiction and how writing sci-fi gives him a creative outlet, and he finished by sharing a tip on how to turn a regular, boring walk you do regularly into a creative exercise using haiku.

I thought I could talk a lot but there was no stopping Will – maybe it’s a Hull thing – so make yourself a mug of your favourite hot beverage and settle in for the read.

From the archives: walking in the rain

Someone – not me – was sick in the night.
So someone – not her – had to clean it up.
Then while the clean up was happening, someone – not me – had a wee on the carpet.
So someone – not her – had to clean that up.
And while that clean up was happening, someone – again, I must insist it was not me – had a poo on the carpet.
And someone – not her – discovered that poo while it was still fresh, warm and moist…

… by stepping on it.

Barefoot.

Thank you for your patience while I process this. I will not be taking questions at this time.

Pickle had her first long walkie this weekend with a wander around two of my favourite places for walking: Bridestones (National Trust) and Hole of Horcum in North Yorkshire.

We’re keeping the walking time short for her while she’s still a pup, so she got to enjoy most of it while I carried her, with plenty of stops along the way to rest and enjoy the view. Good job she’s ickle, eh?

I was also relieved, and grateful, that Levisham Moor has escaped the wildfires. Long may that last 🤞

Meet Pickle the Cockapoo 🐶💜

This little beauty came in for her first mini groom, and what an absolute gem she was throughout! ✂️✨

Everything was taken nice and steady to let Pickle get used to her first salon experience, with plenty of breaks, cuddles and reassurance along the way. 🥰🐾

She enjoyed herself so much that she even had a lovely little relaxing nap while waiting for her mum. 😴💤

What a gorgeous little girl she is! 💕🐾 @thewriterswalk by @thewriterswalk

New aisle in the supermarket unlocked – meet Pickle.

People keep asking me what she is and I’m delighted to share that she is an absolute treat.
