Othello - Act 3, Scene 3 Iago: “O, beware, my lord, of jealousy; it is the green-eyed monster which doth mock the meat it feeds on.” “The green-eyed monster”, one of Shakespeare's most chilling lines, and one of the most quoted in Othello matric papers. 📚 Study Note: Hamlet – Act 3, Scene 2 “The lady doth protest too much, methinks.” This is one of Shakespeare’s most famous lines, and it’s often misunderstood. In the play, Queen Gertrude comments on a character in The Mousetrap (the play within the play), suggesting that the queen in the performance is making such dramatic promises of loyalty that they become unbelievable. 🎭 Why is this quote important? Shakespeare uses this moment to explore one of Hamlet’s central themes: appearance versus reality. The line suggests that excessive declarations can sometimes reveal the very thing they’re trying to hide. It forces audiences to question whether words can ever be trusted without actions to support them. 💡 Fun fact: Although Shakespeare wrote this line more than 400 years ago, people still use the phrase “protesting too much” in everyday conversation when they think someone is trying a little too hard to convince others that something is true. ✍️ Exam tip: Don’t simply quote the line. Ask yourself: • What is Shakespeare revealing about truth and deception? • Why does Gertrude react this way? • Does this moment unintentionally reflect her own relationship with King Claudius? • How does this quote support the theme of appearance versus reality throughout the play? The strongest exam answers don’t just identify the quote. They explain why Shakespeare included it and connect it to the play’s larger themes. #Hamlet #Shakespeare #StudyNotes #EnglishLiterature #thinktheatre by @thinktheatreza
Quote of the Week 📖 “O, beware, my lord, of jealousy! It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock the meat it feeds on.” - Iago, Act 3, Scene 3 At first glance, Iago seems to be giving Othello wise advice. He warns him that jealousy is dangerous, a “green-eyed monster” that consumes the person it possesses. But here’s the twist: Iago doesn’t want Othello to avoid jealousy. He wants him to embrace it. This scene is a masterclass in manipulation. Rather than accusing Desdemona outright, Iago plants tiny seeds of doubt. He asks questions, hesitates before speaking, and pretends to protect Othello from painful truths. By appearing reluctant to gossip, he makes his lies seem even more believable. Shakespeare uses dramatic irony brilliantly here. We, the audience, know that Iago is lying, but Othello doesn’t. Every word Iago speaks pulls Othello further away from reason and closer to tragedy. The image of the “green-eyed monster” has become one of Shakespeare’s most enduring metaphors. Jealousy doesn’t just hurt others, it devours the person who harbours it. By the end of the play, Othello has become the very victim Iago described. This moment reminds us that the most dangerous lies are often disguised as good advice. 💭 Discussion Question: Do you think Othello’s downfall was inevitable once he trusted Iago, or could he have chosen to trust Desdemona instead? by @thinktheatreza
Quote of the Week 📖 “There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.” - Hamlet, Act 1, Scene 5 Just moments before this line, Hamlet, Horatio and Marcellus have encountered the Ghost of Hamlet’s father. Horatio, the scholar and rational thinker, struggles to make sense of what he has witnessed. Hamlet’s response is profound: there are realities beyond what we can explain through logic alone. This quote marks a turning point in the play. Hamlet has learned that his father was murdered, and his understanding of the world is shattered. From this moment on, nothing is as simple as it once seemed. Shakespeare introduces one of the play’s central themes: appearance versus reality. What we see isn’t always the truth, and sometimes the greatest dangers are hidden beneath the surface. For students, this line reminds us that Hamlet is more than a revenge tragedy. It explores the conflict between reason and the unknown, certainty and doubt, and the limits of human knowledge. Discussion question: Do you think Hamlet is encouraging Horatio to believe in the supernatural, or is he simply reminding him to keep an open mind? #Hamlet #Shakespeare #EnglishLiterature #MatricEnglish #studynotes by @thinktheatreza
Quote of the week: Othello’s final words are some of Shakespeare’s most heartbreaking. In this moment, Othello stands over Desdemona after realising the devastating truth: she was innocent all along. The jealousy that consumed him was planted by Iago, and now it’s too late. “I kissed thee ere I killed thee…” is the collision of love and regret. The same lips that once symbolised devotion now become the symbol of his destruction. This line captures the tragedy of Othello perfectly: - Love twisted by manipulation - Jealousy destroying reason - Truth arriving too late Othello doesn’t just mourn Desdemona here, he mourns the man he was before suspicion took hold. And in classic Shakespearean tragedy, his final act is both punishment and repentance. Question for revision: Do you think Othello was a victim of Iago… or responsible for his own downfall? #Othello #MatricEnglish #StudyShakespeare #ThinkTheatre #ShakespeareExplained by @thinktheatreza
Between backstage shadows and stage lights lives a thousand thoughts. The doubt. The focus. The fire. A few final steps… and the artist disappears, letting the character take over. Claudius enters. 🎭👑 #Hamlet #TheJourneyToStage #TheatreMagic #shakespeare #matric by @thinktheatreza
