Every generation has that “where were you when” moment…
I was in 10th grade at Pace Christian high school. Mrs. Connie Eubanks walked into our chapel and said to pray because a plane just hit the World Trade Center.
I leaned over to my friend next to me and said “how does anyone hit the World Trade Center? Them buildings are huge” We shrugged it off.
About 15 minutes later, Mrs. Eubanks and our principal, Mr. Hall, rolled TV’s into the chapel and began to lead us in prayer right before the second plane hit tower 2.
I leaned back over to my friend and said “we might be going to war bro.”

Now, 25 years later, this date is still heavy. Not for the political fodder or wars, but the sheer amount of lost lives on that day.
It was 102 minutes between first impact and second tower collapse, 102 minutes that changed the course of life that my 16 year old mind had only known.
Last year, I got to visit the memorial on Sept. 11. This is from that night. There’s so many names to read, which still don’t encompass it all.

This year, this date hits me different. Maybe because I’m processing my own grief. Could just be mature eyes seeing it differently.
I do know that I’m taking every chance to tell my people I love them. Being present where I am/we are. Cherishing every moment like it could be the last, because for 2000+ people on this day, 25 years ago, it was.

For the past year, I’ve posted photos like this on my story, documenting places I’ve been and worked. It’s been pretty cool. But what led to it was not cool at all.

Around a year ago this time I lost my job. I’d worked HARD to get there. It was a dream come true, until it wasn’t. And it wasn’t just losing a job, it was losing a way of life, some friends, conveniences my family had adjusted to. It was a lot, and it was hard.

I found myself spiraling for a sec, reconsidering some really bad habits I had before. What most reading this don’t know is that a lot of those habits/actions/behaviors were symptoms of my depression. I’ve fought with it for YEARS and become a pro at masking it.

My depression isn’t what you see in TV commercials or depicted in pop culture. My main struggle is presence, being fully present. I physically show up a lot of places but not always mentally, emotionally or spiritually.

Now I’m taking the mask off and challenging some others to do the same. Especially my men reading this. We’re not designed to carry life’s weight in silence. We all need help, and it’s ZERO shame in saying that out loud. I’ve learned and am continuing to learn the strength in it.

If you’ve read this far, thank you. I’m telling more of my story in the coming weeks. But now is action time. Send the text you’ve been meaning to send. Make the phone call. Book the trip. Whatever it is to connect with who you’ve been meaning/needing to connect with, do it now. Tomorrow isn’t promised, and you never know, it may be what the person on the other end needs. ✌🏽

In April 2018, I got the chance to go with my friend @mwaura7745 to interview Jimmy Carter. I was taken back by how firm a 94 year old man’s handshake was. What wasn’t surprising was the detail of the humanitarian work he’d committed his life to, before, during and especially after his presidency. To say he was a living example of a follower of Christ is an understatement. He truly LIVED the way Christ mandated his disciples to live, loving everyone, serving all, and reflecting Jesus above all. Rest in power with our Lord President Carter. by @thisisjtowns

39…
• All year I’ve been on the theme of gratitude…
• I realize that on most birthdays, I look back primarily on what I don’t have or have yet to accomplish…
• Sadly, I don’t ever really take inventory on what I DO have and what I HAVE accomplished…
• Namely, I’m grateful for life. I’m grateful for my family. I’m grateful for my ride or die friends. I’m grateful for all the little things I take for granted…
• I’m grateful for answered prayers and those God chose to leave unread…
• Above all, I’m grateful God decided that he could use me to reflect Him… that’s way more than I deserve.
• AND, I’m grateful to have a birthday on the newest of federal holidays…
HAPPY JUNETEETH FAMILY!

DEAR 2555,
* I thought of listing all the memories but it’d be WAY too long. I’ve grown up physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually in this house.
* My kids have countless memories with their grandparents here. My sister and brother in law were engaged here. Countless parties, movie nights, pool parties, basketball and football in the yard.
* This house has always served as a safe haven for our family and God has graced us to be here for so long. Now it’s time for a beautiful family to make new memories here. Cheers 2555 Nevels, it’s been amazing, and I thank God for you!

Heard it #nationalsonsday so let me shout out my reasons for living.
To my boys, I can’t express how proud I am to be your dad. Your character is unmatched, your grace is endless, your persistence for your desires is inspiring. I love watching you both grow into who you want to become. I love you both more than life!

BORN FREE:

Today, on Juneteenth, I’m 38 years old. My homie @jasoncaesar said once that we’re the first generation born with civil rights. At first it didn’t register but it eventually, it landed that it’s very true.

In my now 38 years, I’ve lived a pretty free life. I’ve been able to work in multiple places, go to school, worship, raise my kids, marry @chefdori and live in multiple places, basically without question. What’s wild is my mom and dad were raised in the same city as me, yet without the exact same freedoms for the early years of their lives.

We’ve gone so far as a society. The fact that #Juneteenth is finally acknowledged as a federal holiday now is astounding. I didn’t know this was a holiday until high school, after doing an Ask Jeeves search (#iykyk) Recently, we just reached the break even point of freedom vs. slavery in America.

So as we go through the day today, take a moment to look around and appreciate the freedom we all have. The blessings of getting up everyday, working where we want, living where we want, loving who we want, worshipping who/what we want, let’s not take for granted ANY freedom that ANYBODY has. Let’s do justice and honor those that died captive fighting for our freedom today. Happy Juneteenth fam.

TO MY SONS:
You two are my joy. Y’all are my reason. You both make me laugh, learn, grow, share (even when I want all my food to myself). Imagining life without either one of you is a thought I’d rather not imagine. I love you both more than you know and I thank you for making me a father. My greatest prayer is that I don’t fail you. To my dad, thank you for being the best possible example to these silly kids! Happy Father’s Day to all the dads doing great dad things! #love #happyfathersday by @thisisjtowns
