Fine art photography careers rarely follow a linear path. More often, they are shaped by curiosity, risk, and the willingness to pursue an opportunity when it appears. In an exclusive interview, Thomas Werner @thomaswernerprojects co-author of the book Twenty One Summers, speaks with Lenscratch editor Eliott Linwood (@elliottlinwood1) about a career spanning photography, curation, writing, publishing, and gallery direction. Werner is also the author of The Business of Fine Art Photography (Routledge, New York) and The Fashion Image (Bloomsbury, London), board member for the Santa Fe Center for Photographic Art, and the editor at large for IRK magazine, a Paris-based print publication and website. It was a pleasure to work with the Medium Photo Collective @mediumsandiego as the curator for ECHO Opening Reception Friday, November 6, 2026 | 6:00 PM Studio on Banks 5343 Banks Street, San Diego Free and open to the public! ECHO – Curatorial Statement An echo is never a repetition. It returns altered, shaped by time, distance, memory, perspective, and experience. ECHO brings together twenty photographers from the Medium Photographic Collective, each responding to the exhibition’s central concept with an investigation of their personal experience, and social, moral, historical, aesthetic, familial, and environmental concerns. The resulting photographs ask us to question, consider our place in life, and how we approach our dreams, responsibilities, and happiness. As a curator, working with the Medium Collective has given me the chance to examine how a diverse group of creatives engage and grow. To meet and collaborate with an extraordinary group of individuals, each with a distinct background and perspective. From the selection of the exhibition concept, through individual and group meetings, and the development of the installation plan, it has given me the chance to learn and grow as well, an opportunity for which I am deeply appreciative.
