Wake This Land | Thorns Gallery
Until 18 October by @thorns.gallery

Mark Reddy | Thorns Gallery
Until 18 October

Mark Reddy looks to nature for the roots of our co-evolution, sourcing organic materials on daily walks along the lost ways and through the woodlands of Somerset, England. A modern-day gatherer and storyteller, he is drawn to the found and foraged reimagined through the subtle intervention of the artist’s hand. The resulting sculptures wield a powerful, physical presence. With a deft sensitivity to line and gesture, Reddy draws out these strange figurative, animate forms, part nature, part artifice. For the artist the final compositions hold deep significance. Placed in pairs or familial groupings, each work appears in conversation with another, sometimes urgent, clamouring, asking to be heard. Both angular and
elegantly curved, they embody an apparent fragility and a primal energy. Through the work, Reddy explores a complex narrative borne out of a deep connection
between material, process and land. Reframing our reciprocal relationship with the tree and our woodlands, as both terrestrial and other worldly, Reddy reflects on the fragility of all living things and our shared vulnerability to the disruption of our natural environment. He considers how the tree shapes our land and heritage, honouring our kinship and equality with the natural world. Reddy’s focus on wood art stems from an early fascination with the modest,
functional form of the hand carved spoon with all its cultural symbolism and sculptural elements of head, neck, shoulders and torso. The familiar iconography of
the utensil has occupied a place in everyday lives throughout our shared history and culture, channelling ritual and kinship, ceremony and nourishment. Reddy’s sculptures abstract this utilitarian form through animated sculptural totems, singular and grouped, referencing the interdependence and animacy of the living world.

Max Bainbridge | Corpus, 2026
Wake This Land | Thorns Gallery
Until 18 October, by appointment

Max Bainbridge’s sculptures look beneath the physical surface of the tree to reveal nature’s fragility during a time of crisis, reflecting on our collective psychology in the face of our own mortality. His interventions into fallen sections of beech tree, are singular attempts to uncover what these arboreal bodies tell us about ourselves and the future of our natural world.

Featuring: Max Bainbridge, Helen Carnac, Ken Eastman, David Gates, Nicola Tassie.

‘Wake this Land’ engages directly with our complex and shifting relationship to place through material, inviting an imaginative and tactile response. Through their divergent perspectives and disciplines, from clay to wood, metal and textiles, the artists’ experimental investigations explore new and evolving notions of the land that surrounds us. Possessing a unique visual language, the works on view reflect the entanglement of nature and the human, with both traces and echoes of land use and lives lived. The exhibition presents narratives of journeys and encounters, rural environments and seasonal change exploring both our collective experience of the natural world, human presence and the artists’ intimate reflections on identity, home and belonging.

Helen Carnac | Meadownotes
Wake This Land | Thorns Gallery until 18 October.

‘The works in the series Meadownotes capture impressions of organic materials and are printed
using graphite which is applied through pressure. The range of marks and impressions that can be achieved through this process is surprising. Some prints are very graphic, almost photographic and others more abstract. The prints include many wildflowers - yellow rattle; lady’s bed straw; rough hawkbit; common knapweed; self heal; hogweed; sheep’s fescue; smooth stalk meadow grass; cut leafed cranesbill and many more. Also garden plants such as viburnum, salvia amistad, maple keys, aquilegia, clematis, allium, euphorbia and lavender.

When we moved from London to an old farm in rural west Somerset in late 2020 our intention was to try and make a more wildlife friendly environment on the 10 acre plot that we now inhabited. We have planted over 700 native trees and 3 meadows so far and have let the rest of our land and garden take on a more wild aspect. Finding plants that thrive in the climate here seems incredibly important, especially after this long, dry summer. Walking around the fields each day I have
become fascinated by everything growing around us and collect materials to bring back to the studio.
Learning to grow things has also led to my interest with using seeds as a print material, the prints reveal something of their structure, spreading, setting seed and growing qualities. I am very passionate about highlighting the delicate qualities of these plants which many consider to be weeds’. - Helen Carnac

‘Wake This Land’ | Thorns Gallery
Exhibition continues until 18 October

Featuring: Max Bainbridge, Helen Carnac, Ken Eastman, David Gates, Nicola Tassie.

‘Wake this Land’ engages directly with our complex and shifting relationship to place through material, inviting an imaginative and tactile response. Through their divergent perspectives and disciplines, from clay to wood, metal and mixed materials the artists’ experimental investigations explore new and evolving notions of the land that surrounds us.

In 2025, Jonathan Reed and Graeme Black opened Thorns Gallery in Raydale in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. Sitting above Lake Semerwater, it is that rarest of things – a gallery space sitting alone and truly immersed in a wild and beautiful landscape. Constructed on the original footprint of and largely from the salvaged remains of an existing cattle shed, made redundant by the end of intensive dairy farming in the area, the project is Jonathan’s response to the
challenge of designing and building in a national park. Working within the limits of strict developmental controls he has created new structures that fully respect the local agricultural vernacular. The buildings do this handsomely and the result is a distinctly contemporary space of great quality within structures that at first glance appear untouched. The gallery shows the works of artists and makers who are inspired by the landscape and work with natural materials in all their forms.

Ken Eastman | Wake This Land | Thorns Gallery
Don’t Get Around Much Anymore, 2023
White stoneware, painted with coloured slips & oxides

For Ken Eastman working through the medium of ceramics, he can be both builder and painter. Lines, surfaces and shapes give meaning and voice to mute clay, the material energised through his intuitive and intimate approach to slab building. The interplay of light, colour and space give structure and form to his vessels, resembling topographical sections through an imagined landscape. There is an intriguing tension between stasis and movement, provocation and quiet
reflection.

‘Wake this Land’ continues @thorns.gallery until 18 October 2026, by appointment

Beautiful photos by Owen Gale of dawn breaking in Raydale where, in a fold of land above lake Semerwater, we live and where Thorns Gallery is situated. Today we open the doors to a show of objects curated by Jacqueline Reddy Moore. Her focus is on the works of makers who have responded to both the particular nature of the land around us and also to the human interventions that have given it its particular shape, texture and form. “Wake this Land” ……a perfect Manifesto for Now ….come see if you can it’s going to be a lovely day ! by @thorns.gallery

WAKE THIS LAND
Thorns Gallery
5 September - 18 October
By appointment only

Featuring: Max Bainbridge, Helen Carnac, Ken Eastman, David Gates, Nicola Tassie and curated by Jacqueline Moore

Spanning a material language of wood and metal Max Bainbridge’s work seeks a grounded presence in the physicality of the sculpted object through his enduring relationship to the natural body of the tree. By working with trees that have fallen where they once grew, his sculptures are a direct and intimate connection to land and place. Exploring the human condition and the need to protect ourselves in times of crisis, his works, carved from wood, often sit in relation to objects cast in metal as he looks to how our fragile and complex place within the natural world can persist and endure. Through the stripping of bark, casting of wood and hollowing of trunks Bainbridge explores what is imbibed within these trees throughout their lifetime.
