fashion is—and always will be—political. like all other forms of expression, it can be (and has been) commodified, caricatured, and co-opted for malicious purposes. from severely racist imagery, to orientalist tropes, to the unfair and unsafe labor practices backing the clothing manufacturing system, all those who participate in the fashion industry—from the smallest reseller to the largest CEO—need to be aware of the ideas they are promoting with each piece they produce, sell, and/or wear. this is the only way to operate ethically.

i know this infographic is low quality BUT! the message is not!!! we’ve observed a lot of ignorance regarding orientalism in fashion in both online and in-person reselling communities, and we felt the need to point this out. importantly, this is NOT a callout for any one person or organization; rather, this is a reflection of the general rise of the subtle promotion of or orientalist attitudes through the reselling of such goods in reselling communities. we implore you to consider this the next time you source!
