A monument worthy of its own beer! To celebrate Thunderhead's arrival, we made an IPA in collaboration with @finebalancebrewing and @bdiversitygroup. Thunderbeer is a shiny brew that uses local honey, spruce tips and really good vibes! We were thrilled to work with Andrew, Mitch and Ren on this as part of Fine Balance's quarterly community projects. Big love and huge thanks!!

Wanna try? Thunderbeer is available for a limited time at the Fine Balance Brewery in Kingston.

And huge thanks to the licensees who carried Thunderbeer this summer! @brudbar_ (Barrie), @thecatincarp (Carp), @theonlycafe (Toronto), @brickhousebrewpub (Woodstock), @arabellaparkbar (KW), @thewrendanforth (Toronto), @cornerbar_orleans (Ottawa), @redhousekingston (Kingston), @theprincesscafe (KW), @kingston_brew_pub (Kingston), @thegreatergoodbar (Toronto), @bossanovato (Toronto), @thetorchbearertaproom (Oshawa), @thedylanbar (Toronto).

The Thunderhead Monument in Ottawa recognizes historic discrimination faced by generations of 2SLGBTQI+ people in Canada, reflecting the strength, activism and hope of queer and trans communities.

Thunderhead was funded through a class action lawsuit launched by survivors of the LGBT Purge against the Government of Canada. The Purge was a government campaign that systematically hunted, harassed and fired 2SLGBTQI+ members of the Canadian Armed Forces, the RCMP and the federal public service between the 1950s and mid-1990s.

Ottawa’s queer geography is alive with history.

Across generations and cities, queer and trans communities have created spaces to gather, connect, celebrate, resist and find one another. These aren’t just venues, they are sanctuaries where we can safely exist, organize, and express joy. Modern nightlife culture simply wouldn’t exist without them.

Today, Thunderhead stands as part of that living history. Now open in downtown Ottawa, steps from the ByWard Market and Centretown, the monument is rooted in a neighbourhood shaped by generations of 2SLGBTQI+ nightlife—spaces of refuge and resistance during the LGBT Purge, and continue to bring people together today.

💜🪩

This monument is inspired by the forces of nature and the forces of community.

A thunderhead cloud is alive with unstoppable energy. In Anishinabe teachings, thunderclouds are home to the Thunderers whose storms renew the land and make things right.

Like our communities, these clouds are powerful and bring change.

____
