Our mitochondria are basically the engines for our cells. Think of an engine for a car.

Your thyroid controls the size and the number of your mitochondria (cell engines).

Not having mitochondria would be like not having an engine for a car.

Having mitochondria that are too small would be like trying to drive a huge 18-wheeler Mack truck with a lawn mower engine.

When your thyroid is working optimally all the cells in your body are energized and doing their jobs properly.

However, when your thyroid is filled with toxins, viruses and other pathogens it cannot work properly and all the mitochondria in your body suffer.

As a result, almost every single cell in your body will not work right

Got diagnosed with hyperthyroidism/Graves’ disease 8 years ago… And today, I finally I got rid of ts 😭

For those wondering, it’s a autoimmune disease so I get tired v easily, hand tremors, sweaty palms, anxiety, hair loss, weight loss, bulging eyes, heat sensitivity, enlarged thyroid gland, fast/irregular heart beat, shortness of breath, insomnia, muscle weakness… and more 😭 so I decided to get surgery :’)

Forever grateful to my care team and loved ones who supported me through this journey 💕 Recovery is just the beginning, but I’m excited and thankful for everything that’s ahead. To all my thyroid girlies, you’re not alone 🫶🏻🦋

Insomnia and an overly active brain can be caused by many things, not just hypothyroidism. BUT…

It is one of those things that we tend to have with a sluggish thyroid.

Sometimes it’s also one of the symptoms that people experience that is passed off as “stress” by doctors, leaving thousands of people undiagnosed if they don’t have other classic thyroid symptoms.

But studies have shown that those with thyroid disease are far more likely to have insomnia and even ADHD (like me!) than those with normally functioning thyroids.

Both of these mean you can be tired all day and yet wide awake, worrying about everything and anything (and sometimes waaaay overthinking) in the middle of the night.

So some of the things I’ve found that have helped:

✅ magnesium in the evening- most of us are deficient but this helps promote relaxation

✅ exercise- a tired body tends to stay asleep more than one that isn’t… (but not too much! Walking and strength training are great examples of things to do)

✅ shaking- if I wake up in the middle of the night for any reason, I get out of bed and shake my whole body for at least a minute. This gets rid of any sympathetic stressful energy and I usually can fall right back asleep. If I don’t, my brain GOES for hours

✅ Blood sugar balance- low blood sugar can wake you up in the middle of the night and produce a stress response. Once you’re in that, the brain kicks on.

I could go on and on because I have MANY things that can help for various situations. But these are some of the most effective for me.

“Thyroid Cancer is the good cancer” a statement that couldn’t be further from the truth. This disease has such long lasting, life changing effects on you that you will never be the same person you were prior to your diagnosis. I cannot stress then importance of checking your neck!! Don’t turn a blind eye. Don’t be naive and think “it’ll never happen to me”. The most important change I want to see is educating people and professionals and make them understand it isn’t a good cancer. THERE IS NO SUCH THING!!

"I'm a 30 year old healthy mom of 2. I had zero symptoms and went in for a routine physical.

The nurse practitioner felt my neck and asked how long the lump had been there. I had never noticed it.

She sent me to get a thyroid ultrasound. They found a growth and sent me to the endocrinologist for a fine needle aspiration, which is a process to determine whether a growth is cancerous.

After 5 days of agonizing worry and waiting, I was diagnosed with papillary thyroid carcinoma, a type of thyroid cancer.

I went in for a full thyroidectomy in March to have my thyroid gland removed where I found out from pathology that the cancer spread to the lymph nodes and pre-tracheal tissue.

I want to turn something bad into something good and use my story to influence others to take their health seriously.

Go to your annual appointments, check your body for lumps, and always advocate for yourself."

As Thyroid Cancer awareness month comes to an end we are featuring thyroid cancer survivor Mandy’s story @asullivan_33 🦋🩵

“Back in March my mom noticed a lump in the front of my neck. I brushed it off and called her crazy. She brought it up again the next day while looking at me in the light so I gave in and went to urgent care. Fast forward to scans, blood work, and biopsies, turns out that was my tumor she had been seeing. It was papillary thyroid cancer.

I had a total thyroidectomy in June and we found it had spread to lymph-nodes. I began the RAI (radioactive iodine) treatment 9/16 and received cancer free results 9/24🎉🎊

Being only 24, I would urge anyone to get their neck checked if you notice ANY bump- be an advocate for yourself.

- Don’t be afraid to spam your Doctor’s inbox with questions
- Join the Facebook groups, follow the instagram accounts…it can feel lonely out there but there are people who can relate
- Don’t feel ashamed to start therapy or anxiety medication. It’s a lot to accept you are a cancer patient and will have check ups and be on medications the rest of your life
- Distract yourself, but don’t overdue it
- Lastly, the scar will heal. It will look better…and no one will ever notice it🦋🤍💜🩷”

Hello thyroid cancer, it’s me, Chloe. 👋

September is Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month. 🎗️ I am remembering my diagnosis almost two years ago. It took me a long time to work through the sadness and confusion of why this happened to me. I’m young and healthy! But cancer doesn’t care. 🤬

So I’m spreading information on thyroid cancer in hopes of early diagnoses for all those affected. Get your thyroid nodules checked! And get a second opinion too! 🩺

Thyroid Cancer Facts:

1️⃣ Thyroid Cancer Types: Thyroid cancer encompasses several distinct types, with the most common being papillary thyroid carcinoma. Papillary thyroid carcinoma typically has a favorable prognosis and accounts for about 80% of all thyroid cancer cases. Follicular thyroid carcinoma is the second most common type, while medullary and anaplastic thyroid cancers are rarer but generally more aggressive. ⚕️

2️⃣ Risk Factors: Several risk factors are associated with thyroid cancer, including gender, age, family history, and exposure to radiation. Females are more likely to develop thyroid cancer than males, and the risk increases with age. A family history of thyroid cancer or certain genetic syndromes can also elevate the risk, as can exposure to high levels of ionizing radiation, such as during medical treatments or nuclear accidents.
3️⃣ Thyroid Nodule Prevalence: Thyroid nodules are relatively common and can often be benign (non-cancerous). Up to 60% of people may have thyroid nodules, but only a small percentage of these nodules turn out to be cancerous. The presence of a thyroid nodule does not necessarily indicate thyroid cancer.
4️⃣ Treatment Options: The treatment for thyroid cancer depends on various factors, including the type and stage of cancer, the patient’s age and overall health, and whether the cancer has spread. Common treatment options include surgery (thyroidectomy), radioactive iodine therapy, external beam radiation therapy, and thyroid hormone replacement therapy. In some cases, targeted therapies and chemotherapy may be used, especially for more aggressive forms of thyroid cancer.

2 YEAR RAI ANNIVERSARY ☢️🦋 ✨️

it has officially been 2 years since i had radioactive iodine therapy!

i still remember it all so vividly! i remember going into hospital and the nurses taking the bright yellow tablet out of its lead lined container and giving it to me, i remember drinking so much water that i peed 8 times in one day so i could go home as quick as possible, & i remember how lonely it felt isolating in the silent & empty hospital floor.

i wanted to repost this drawing of mine as thycan has well and truly changed my life. i am super grateful to still be cancer free but it's important for those who haven't gone through thycan to remember that it's not as simple as beating the "good cancer" as it still impacts you for the rest of your life! so if your loved one is still struggling despite being cancer free, this may be their new normal, and you should support them with making new routines to make them feel as best as possible without making them feeling guilty about their post-cancer symptoms.

i still struggle with salivary gland dysfunction, fatigue, nausea, heartburn, scanxiety, thyroxine management and more, all stemming from thycan and RAI specifically. i am still learning everyday how i can manage it all better, and while it is overwhelming at times i hope i can come up with a routine that can help me live my most fulfilled life!
