🎃 THE VANISHING MEMAW OF BRAKESVILLE 🎃
A Halloween Short Story by Tibbi Ann Hardix

Halloween in Brakesville always carried two different weights. The first was the cheerful kind. “Happy Halloween! Oh, how cute! Here's your candy!” The second was a little harder to explain. “Did you hear that? Did it just get cold in here? WHERE'S MEMAW?!”

Yes, Halloween 2026 would forever be remembered as the year of the vanishing community grandma.

Everybody loved Peggy Sue. Her pies could settle a family feud, her handmade afghan blankets were softer than a newborn kitten, and her hot tea could cure just about anything except stupidity. Peggy Sue knew everybody in Brakesville. Their birthdays, their children's names, even which husbands were sneaking cigarettes behind the church.

Funny thing was, nobody could remember actually meeting her.

One day, she'd simply been there, rocking on her porch, waving at passing cars like she'd lived in Brakesville since the Lord invented dirt.

Now, Terry Hymes was twenty years old and had the manners of a possum digging through a dumpster. On the afternoon of October 31st, Terry came barreling through the Lazy River Mall and slammed straight into Peggy Sue, sending her little flour sack crashing onto the tile.

“Watch where you're going, you old bat!” Terry snapped.

Peggy Sue didn't move. She simply looked down at her ruined flour, then slowly raised her eyes.

“Oh, sweetheart,” she whispered, smiling with teeth that suddenly seemed a little too long. “You just spoiled supper.”

And by midnight, Brakesville would be missing two people.

One was a twenty-year-old troublemaker.

The other was a sweet little old lady who hadn't aged in seventy-five years.

🥧 What happened to Terry Hymes? And just what was Memaw planning to serve for supper?

🎃🖤 Happy Halloween, my spooky little readers!

The full short story is waiting for you on my blog! Come visit Brakesville, meet Peggy Sue, and discover why you should ALWAYS mind your manners around Memaw.

With a little mischief and a whole lot of spooky,
Tibbi Ann by @tibbiannhardix

I’ve been a little quiet lately, but don’t mistake quiet for gone. ❤️

I’m still here. Still writing. Still creating behind the scenes—and sometimes, that’s exactly where the magic needs to happen.

Seeing my books **sell out in my local shops** has been absolutely incredible. Even better have been the messages, reviews, and conversations from readers who have stepped into these stories and come back to tell me what they thought. Every bit of that support means more than I can put into words.

There is plenty more happening behind the curtain. I’m just not ready to pull it back quite yet. 😉

So, for now…

Keep wondering.
Keep living in the mystery.

Because really… **who knows where Brakesville will take you next?** 🔎🍒

🌙 MYSTERY MONDAY 🌙

Welcome back to Brakesville, West Virginia… where some places are better left alone.

Unfortunately, Heather has never been particularly good at leaving things alone. 😏

A little spoiler-free peek inside The Mystery of Cerise Falls:

The woods swallowed them as they made their way down the familiar path, the darkness thicker than ever before.

They didn’t talk on the way to Cerise Falls.

The night around them seemed alive, breathing in slow rhythm with their footsteps.

When they finally reached the falls, William asked the one question you probably never want someone to ask in the middle of the woods at night:

“But what if it answers?”

Heather looked toward the dark water.

“Then we listen.” 👀

And somewhere behind the roar of Cerise Falls…

something laughed.

Yeah.

Maybe don't go chasing waterfalls in Brakesville. 😂🖤

Would YOU have stayed to find out what was calling them… or would William have been eating your dust back to town? 😂👇

🖤 FAMILY REUNION DAY — LET’S PLAY A GAME! 🖤

In true Tibbi Ann style, we’re going to write a family reunion horror story together. 😈

Here’s how it works: I’ll start the story, and you add ONE sentence in the comments to keep it going. Read the comments before yours, then pick up wherever the last person left off.

Make it creepy. Make it weird. Make it funny. Make it downright terrifying. Just keep the story going!

One rule: Absolutely NO politics or religion. We’re here to ruin the family reunion with fictional murder and mayhem, not Thanksgiving dinner. 😂

I’ll begin…

The old house smelled of freshly baked bread, just-made deviled eggs, and warm apple pie. The worst of the summer heat hadn’t settled in yet, and a heavy blanket of gray clouds hung high over the mountains. Cars would soon begin winding up the road, packed with cousins, aunts, uncles, and dishes covered in foil.

Everything was ready for the family reunion.

At least, that’s what everyone thought.

Your turn. Add ONE sentence below. 👇 by @tibbiannhardix

🍓🌾 Beyond the Raspberry Bushes: Scarecrow of Crawdad Creek 🌾🍓

Some stories are simply written… and some feel like they were waiting to be told.

**Beyond the Raspberry Bushes: Scarecrow of Crawdad Creek** follows Taylor Mae Dayton, an eight-year-old girl growing up in rural Appalachia who creates a scarecrow to protect her family’s raspberry bushes. What begins as a simple childhood project quickly turns into something much darker when an evil presence enters her family’s world.

This story blends Appalachian roots, childhood memories, family, and supernatural suspense into a tale that reminds us some things are not as simple as they seem.

But this book holds a special place in my heart.

There are pieces of my own childhood woven throughout these pages — little moments, feelings, and memories that made their way into Taylor Mae’s world. The original idea for this story came from a dream, and from that dream grew a story that I knew I had to bring to life.

Of all the stories I’ve written, this one remains one of my favorites.

Maybe it’s because it feels familiar.
Maybe it’s because it carries a piece of where I came from.
Or maybe it’s because sometimes the stories closest to us are the ones that stay with us the longest.

If you enjoy Appalachian settings, supernatural suspense, and stories where childhood memories meet the unknown…

**Beyond the Raspberry Bushes: Scarecrow of Crawdad Creek is a must-read.** 🍓

I had such a great conversation with a reader yesterday about *The Mystery of Cerise Falls*—and I absolutely love hearing what readers take away from this story. 🖤

We talked about Heather May Andrews, William Krix, Tina Carlson, and all the little pieces of Brakesville that may not be quite what they seem.

One of my favorite things about writing mysteries is knowing that **I know the whole story…but you only know what I’ve chosen to tell you.** 👀

And yesterday’s conversation reminded me just how closely some of you are paying attention.

*The Mystery of Cerise Falls* is more than a missing-girl mystery. It’s an Appalachian ghost story about old classmates, small-town secrets, things left unresolved, and what happens when the past refuses to stay buried.

So now I’m curious…

**If you’ve read Cerise Falls, what’s your theory?**
What really happened to Tina Carlson?
Who—or what—do you trust?
And did you notice anything that made you stop and think, *Wait a minute…*?

No spoilers for the new readers. 😉 But I’d LOVE to hear your theories.

🌲 Welcome back to Brakesville. Some stories don’t end just because the last page does.

Some projects are on pause... and that's okay. 🖤

Right now, real life (and a whole lot of coursework 📚🩺) has my attention. But don't worry—the stories haven't stopped.

I've been quietly building a creepy little short story collection behind the scenes. No release date yet... just letting the ideas grow into something worth sharing. 👻

What have you been working on lately? Tell me in the comments! ⬇️ by @tibbiannhardix

There's something about an Appalachian sky after dark that refuses to tell you all of its secrets.

The clouds shift.
The shadows move.
And for just a moment... you can't help but wonder what's hiding above them.

Some mysteries were never meant to be solved.
