A Vietnamese love bookbinding!
POSTS STORIES REELS
Continuing from my last post, I'm excited to share the final look of the gouge set with their new handles! There are a total of 32 tools in this set, with the number 11 being the one I made myself to complete the collection. Now that they all have their new traditional German-style handles, they’re ready to use! So, what’s next? I’m planning to make a custom tool rack soon to keep everything organized. I’ll update once it’s done! On a related note, I’ve also made some French-style and English-style handles for other tools I own. I’ll be sharing those in my next post—stay tuned! #bookbinding #bookbindingtool #bookbindingtools #tools #handtools #finishingtool #finishingtools #feràdorer #buchbinderwerkzeug #buchbinder #buchbinderie #buchbinden by @timothybindery

This is my handmade sewing frame. This item be in my wishlist for very longtime ago. Basically, any homemade sewing frame are can be done by easier way by combine some steel screw and sone piece of wood. But I fall in love with the classic style, wood screw and black wallnut wood. It is very difficult for me to start making this sewing frame, because lack of tool and no one had experience on threading on wood. I had purchased a threading kit from US, then practice threading... Failure many times, I had tried and tried, do some modifying, sharpening the thread knife. Finally, I got this. Thank for my best friend, a local carpenter ourside the country was supported and help me on steps of doing this - wood work is not easy as I was think. Tell me what you are thinking, or any thing need to improve on this. I am willing yo hear and change. #bookbinding #bookbinder #bindery #bookbindingart #bookstagram #handmadebook #handmadetools #handmadetool #sewingframe #sewingframes #wallnutwood #wallnut #carpenter #blackwallnut #bookbindingtools #bookbindertools #booksewing #reliure #reliuredart #reliureartisanale #reliurecontemporaine. by @timothybindery
The very first prototype — a simple proof of concept. At a glance, it’s still rough, with many things to refine before it becomes a well-designed, fully functional, and truly handy tool. But every project begins somewhere. For now, just a small hint: it’s a supporting tool for box making. More to come. #tool #brasstool #boxmaking #boxmakingtool #timbentool by @timothybindery

Codex 2026 is underway, and I am honored to have sent several of my own tools to this year’s fair. Among them are selected Ascona tools and the brand-new Timbentool Corner Mate, a collaborative tool-making project developed together with my dear friend Ben @ben.elbel. Quantities are quite limited this time. For those attending Codex, you are warmly invited to visit my friend, Đông A Publisher, at Table 15. In addition to the tools, Đông A is also bringing many beautiful bindings to Codex, presenting fine examples of their craftsmanship. Wishing everyone at Codex an inspiring and enjoyable time, and wishing the fair continued success filled with joy and fellowship. In my next post, I will share more detailed information about these tools, which I am proud to present. #Codex2026 #codexbookfair #BookbindingTool #outilreliure #Timbentool #TimbentoolConerMate #CornerMate #BenEllbel #BrassTool #asconatool by @timothybindery
Edge gilding with the German hot roller from @schmedt . That moment when the foil lifts perfectly—pure craftsmanship satisfaction. Happy to share this with friends who appreciate the journey. My sincere thanks to Mr. Roger Grech (@rggrech) for his generous guidance on hot-roller edge gilding; his notes have been instrumental in achieving this result. #bookbinding #bindery #timothybindery #vietnambookbinding #dongsach #dongsachnghethuat #reliure #bookedgegilding #gildingbookedges #bookedgedecoration #schmedt #hotroller by @timothybindery
After years of searching for a classic iron bookpress—readily available in France, the UK, or the US but exceptionally rare in Vietnam, especially with the logistical hurdles of heavy international shipping—fortune finally aligned. Last week, my friend, a seasoned professional in sourcing fine antiques, reached out with an exceptional opportunity. Three days later, the press was in my hands. Its story is remarkable: discovered in a French mansion in Dalat, tucked away in a warehouse. As many know, Vietnam’s history as a former French colony means that such equipment was brought here decades ago for administrative and office use. This piece is a surviving witness of that era. The press arrived covered in dust and rust, yet its mechanism still performs flawlessly. All it needs now is dedicated restoration time to bring it back to its former glory—quite literally, to make it great again. I cannot fully articulate how fortunate and delighted I feel to welcome this historical tool into my workshop. Stay tuned for the restoration journey, my friends. #bookpress #ironpress #bookbindingtoolsequipment #ironbookpress #copypress #bookbindingpress #bookbindingequipment #bookbindingtool #bookbindingtools #timothybindery #vietnambookbinding #dongsach #dongsachnghethuat #bookbinding #bookbindinglove #bookstagram #frenchbookbindingpress #presseareliure #reliurepresse by @timothybindery
On the workbench today: three volumes sewn in the French Link Stitch over Ramie Band — a technique that remains my preferred methodology for structurally robust and time-honored bindings. These commissions are currently in progress, and it is deeply gratifying to see years of study and disciplined practice translate into renewed demand for handcrafted work. I am honored to contribute to giving these books a refreshed presence and to play a small role in strengthening the practice of traditional bookbinding in Vietnam. #bookbinding #bookstagram #vietnam #vietnambookbinding #bindery #timothybindery #frenchlinkstitch #reliure #bookbindingtool #bookbindingawl #bookbindingsewing by @timothybindery
Restoring an Old Gilding Pallet Tool Today I spent the afternoon restoring an old gilding pallet tool — one that came together with a few other well-used pieces. Time had left its mark: the engraved lines had faded shallow, the triangle lost its edge, and the surface bowed gently from years of faithful service. Normally, I prefer to leave old tools as they are — carrying their stories in every scratch — but this one called for a second chance. Though I’m no engraver, its simple form invited me to try. I deepened the lines with a fine wire saw, refined the triangle with a file, shaped the groove and vertex anew, then sanded the surface with care. A final polish brought back its mirror shine. Now, the tool breathes again — sharp, bright, and ready to leave gold upon leather once more. #timothybindery #bookbindingtool #bookbindingtools #finishingtool #finishingpallet #pallettool #palletiron #feradorer #dorure #toolmaking #toolrestoration #finishing #gindingtool #dorersurcuir #vietnambookbinding by @timothybindery
After printing, the sheets are now cut for the first fold and folded into sections. Once folded, the entire set of sections is placed in the press, ready for punching and sewing the next day. After 10 years of using my old camera, it's finally time for a new one — and this is my very first video shot with it. I hope you enjoy it! #bookbinding #reliure #foldingpaper #bindery #timothybindery #bookbindinginprocess #bookbindingtool #canon #zve10 by @timothybindery
Sunday well spent printing a 400-page commission book for a special client. Imposed into 2-fold sheets (4 pages per sheet). Next up: folding, splitting, and sectioning — stay tuned! Did you self print for your binding too? I will release a online tool for help you impose printing sheets yourself, especially for miniature books! #bookbinding #printingprocess #bookarts #handboundbook #bookproject #imposition #bookmaking by @timothybindery
