30Rock launched 20 years ago yesterday! And that reminded me just how beautifully crafted the pilot episode was. It’s very hard to write a pilot. It has to set up the world, unveil the characters, have plenty of story, make you care and make you laugh! The trick is to show who your characters are through their actions, not through exposing dialogue. 30Rock did it probably better than any other sitcom.

If you’re looking for help writing your scripted comedy, click on the links in my bio to find out how I could help.

MY 5 A DAY CHALLENGE!

For the next 5 days (longer if you want to build up a seriously exhaustive list of material) I want you to write down 5 observations a day of things that tickled you. It could be a conversation in the butchers, or a statement of the obvious. It doesn’t have to be the funniest thing you’ve ever seen or heard, just something that amused you and could potentially spark a whole comedy routine, sitcom scene, or idea for approaching an industry problem differently.

What observation has made you laugh in the last few days? Drop it in the comments. Promise I won’t steal it for my next sitcom… by @timreid69

In 2011 a colleague & I came up with the idea for a sitcom about work colleagues in a car share scheme… In 2015 Peter Kay’s Car Share aired for the first time on TV…

My point is, if you’ve got a great idea for a sitcom don’t wait, get it written and pitched to production companies because these things take time!

And if you’ve need a bit of guidance, and support from an experienced, award winning sitcom writer, my online self guided comedy script writing course will take you from idea, through to character development, comic devices, story structure and pitching.

Are you ready to stop getting in your own way?

Head to the link in my bio & grab your FREE taster session or dive straight in and sign up for the full course.
