The neighborhoods with the least police presence are often the ones that feel the safest. The communities with the most police presence often feel the most dangerous. Sounds like it’s the police that’s the problem.

Almost every Black public defender has been fired because their client wanted a White lawyer. Being discriminated against does not change when you become a lawyer. It just ends up manifesting in new ways.

Having Black lawyers to welcome and look out for you when working in a predominantly white space is invaluable. Jamaal was that person for Conrad and I, and has been so for many others. The head nod that says, “I see you.” The handshake that asks, “are you alright?” These relationships have been instrumental in allowing me to do this work for so long. I promised myself to always fill that role for other Black lawyers. In this episode, we discuss some of our experiences as Black pubic defenders and try to unpack the stereotypes attributed to this profession.
