The first two papers from my PhD have now been published. 📚

Alongside my work as an endurance coach, my PhD research examines remote coaching and the coach–athlete relationship in endurance sport.

Despite remote coaching being widely used, relatively little research has explored how these relationships operate when coaches and athletes are geographically separated.

Paper 1: Remote coaching: Coach and athlete perspectives in endurance sports

We interviewed 10 endurance coaches and 10 athletes about their experiences of remote coaching.

Four key themes were identified:

• Coach–athlete relationships
• Individualisation
• Communication
• Commercial considerations

The findings highlight that effective remote coaching involves much more than prescribing and analysing training. Developing relationships, understanding the athlete and establishing effective communication are all important.

Paper 2: A Multi-Modal Case Study of a Distributed Communication Ecology in Remote Endurance Coaching

For this study, we followed a coach–athlete dyad for four months, examining how they interacted across video calls, instant messaging, TrainingPeaks and other communication methods.

The findings demonstrate how remote coaching operates across a distributed communication ecology, with different technologies and communication modes serving different purposes within the coaching process and relationship.

Together, these studies start to provide a better understanding of how remote endurance coaching is experienced and how it operates in practice.
