POSTS STORIES REELS

Carefully chosen to look randomly selected image drop #5
I shot the one of Jarvis Cocker at Ramsgate Music Hall a few years ago. My cousin @martin_green_sound had kindly got us in on the guest list (thanks Mart!). Anyway, I had just bought a new mirrorless camera and thought it would be a good opportunity to try it out in a low light situation. Unfortunately when we arrived, there were signs everywhere saying NO PHOTOGRAPHY ALLOWED”. So, I stood near the back (it’s a tiny venue) and enjoyed the gig (which was incredible). Then it got to the last song and I thought f*ck it, and discreetly holding the camera low so as not to be seen, I rattled off a few shots. Somehow, (and I’ll never know how) through the darkness, glaring spot lights and sweating crowd Jarvis seemed to immediately notice (hence the look of intense annoyance…)

Jarvis, I apologise.

More carefully selected random shots from the archives. People always ask me what I shoot? 25 years and over a million shots in and I still haven’t got a definitive answer, because I want to shoot everything. For me it’s always been about seeing, no matter what the subject is, when I look through the viewfinder, I’m searching for something. As cliched as it may sound, the camera becomes an extension of me. My settings are nearly always set on manual, but as I continuously adjust the aperture, shutter speed, ISO, light, composition etc. I’m not conscious of that part of the process because my photography brain is set on full auto. It’s like putting one foot in front of the other as you walk around, constantly adapting and adjusting to the changing environment without a thought. This gives me full control, but with the freedom to connect with the subject. Then it’s all about having the eye. An eye for a good picture and knowing it when you see it. It rarely just happens, you have to be patient and work for it, relentlessly trying to find it and building each shot, readjusting, repositioning your view, searching for the light, the subject, the composition and the narrative until they work together and click (or to be more accurate click, click, click, click, click, click, click etc.) Then on to the next shot and start the process again and again and again etc. by @tom_gold_photography

It brings me great sadness to announce that we lost my lovely Mum on Friday. Having initially been diagnosed with cancer, she decided to refuse all medical treatment and instead fight on in her own way. Using only her faith and a healthy vegan diet, she defied all the predictions (6 months) and went onto live another 7 years, but finally passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family. She was a true inspiration, a kind, loving, smart, creative, stylish, thoughtful woman and a wonderful mother, grandmother, wife and friend. She will be dearly missed by us all.

Well what do you know?

If you happen to see a copy of the Sunday Times Style magazine @theststyle today, yours truly and my partner in crime and everything else @tom_gold_photography are gracing 4 glorious pages of it.
Detailing our journey from London to Broadstairs and the relentless DIY that we have embraced since starting our new life by the sea.

Written by the brilliant interior stylist @jenhaslamstylist and shot by the equally brilliant @kristy_noble, both of whom were an absolute joy to chat to, we reminisced on how we managed to renovate our home on a budget, buying vintage and second hand furniture to create a unique space.

We also talked about how starting this new chapter sowed the seeds for my business, Little Victory and how this has developed.

It feels pretty surreal to be sitting at home, reading all the messages of congratulations and also the online comments (That’s a post for another day) 😂

I will probably be banging on about this for a while, sorry. This is a big deal for us and I am excited about what the future holds for our life in this beautiful seaside town. by @tom_gold_photography

Shots from the archives #4
Love looking back through the hard drives and digging out images from past shoots. Reminds me how random life as a photographer over the past 25 years has been. Any week can have me suited and booted in The Ritz on a Tuesday, then chasing pigs around a muddy field on a Thursday… by @tom_gold_photography

Shots from the archives #3
Randomly chosen (sort of) from thousands of images I’ve accumulated over the past 20 odd years. Some are test shots, some taken from a sequence or left out of the final cut, others I can’t even remember taking….
