I see I’ve left a bit of red tape on Pagan’s leg but I think it wants to be there

I think formality is really well suited to oil portraits but has to be tempered with genuine emotion - paintings about nothing but status tend to backfire, as we see in, most institutional portraiture in America. So I've tried to let this fellow's natural charm, almost bashfulness, shine through - against which the grandeur (which is nonetheless very satisfying to paint) feels, I hope, lightly worn.

I say "oil on oil on" because there was an old painting which I overpainted with white before starting this one, which gives this thing 'history' - a satisfying feeling of substance despite my not having painted, for example, anything in the sky at all

Recent-ish portrait sketches, in various styles for various people

The scrappier ones done from life, the more polished from photographs. Not at all are great likenesses, and historically an uncertain fate awaits even good drawings with bad likeness: decades in a drawer at best & let us not speak of the worst. But I find that even the duds whose value I can't particularly see at the time of doing them, still have a tendency to quietly age into enchanted objects.

I've been fussing with this melancholic little poem when I ought to be painting faces, and the only way I can get myself to stop is to post it. So here we are.

It might be a little sweet still, need a bit more gloom to offset the sugar?

Portrait of four brothers. This incredibly impressive foursome has got to the age where the eldest is going off into the world, so the band of brothers is breaking up - and this painting was commissioned to remember them as boys, doing what boys do, which is set fire to things.

Particular challenges were the fire, the firelight and the wintry dusk — incredibly evanescent effects that required a lot of patience on the part of the sitters.
.
Getting the vibe right between the four - the internal politics, if you like - you never think it's going to be a problem until it isn't right, when it's an insuperable problem. You can't just throw four likenesses together, you inevitably have to paint the dynamic between them.

The jerry can was a very satisfying paint.
