Some early exploratory visual creative work for a new band @rrunnerrss. A little bit of this got used for the release of their first 3 singles (go listen to them)

1. Deteriorating and hand painting frames of vintage running video

2. Filming concept logo on CRT TV

3. Results of capturing the design work off of the CRT TV

4. Early concept type/logo on top of running vids

5. Early concept work for single cover art

6. Hand painted running vid used to promote singles

Their first full length album coming in the near future-ish. We created the album art and vinyl record packaging, will post that work closer to release.

You can find my new piece “Going Through Changes” on view in the current group show “Sound and Vision” @hehcoamano in Santa Fe, NM - Curated by @marthatraer. This is the last week to see the show in person - on view through Nov. 2nd, 2025. Check out all the work for the show over at hehcoamano.org

This work pushes new territory for me - it’s a hand painted screen print on 11 basswood blocks housed in a custom raw metal frame that I collaborated on with Britton Banowsky (@lamyironworks). He knocked it out of the park, from the side cutout typography “awe and wonder”, to the custom french cleat he built into the back of the frame for hanging.

The theme and requirement for “Sound and Vision” was that each artist had to select a song and then create a visual piece inspired by that song.

I choose the heart wrenching soul ballad “Changes” by Charles Bradley (a cover of the 1972 original by Black Sabbath) - a song about the loss of a deeply loved one. The opening lyrics are the anchor in the song that grab me every time “I’m so unhappy, I’m so sad, I lost the best friend that I ever had….I’m going through changes” - immediately makes me think of my best friend of 30 years, Rob Campbell who passed in early 2020.

Both Charles and Rob meant a lot to me. With Rob, this artwork is a quilted patchwork of illustrated symbols and patterns representing stories of our time together from age 15 to 45 which have become folklore embedded in my memory.

Charles Bradley passed in 2017 not long after the release of “Changes”. I saw him perform around a dozen times… in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, New Orleans, New York, and Austin - where we shared a conversation that I’ll never forget. The undeniable level of joy, elation, and connectedness felt at his shows was absolute magic.

Back in 2008 we discovered the work of @stephan_doitschinoff. Somehow we had ended up watching (can’t recall how we were turned onto it) - a short documentary “Temporal: The Art of Stephan Doitschinoff” (link in bio to doc) and we were immediately drawn into the visual language and the journey presented in a short 13min video.

It so happened at this sametime there was a show going on at Jonathan Levine gallery and we purchased a print titled “Vox Clamantis in Deserto” (look it up if you are curious). It’s a powerful image that has been a center piece of our home since we got the piece in 2008.

Roughly 16 years later we welcomed in a second print by @stephan_doitschinoff and we couldn’t be more excited about the piece.

This is a short video of the print being unrolled and viewed for the first time up close. If you are at all drawn to what you see please visit @stephan_doitschinoff and take a look at how his visual language is brought to life through many forms and disciplines - performance, installation, sculpture, and objects on top of painting and printmaking.

The High Desert Broadcast service had the pleasure of projecting some strange and beautiful visuals for the absolutely mind blowing music created by @___femalegaze

Here is a little peak into the evening and the visuals we created for the show.

The @gralbrothersmusic opened the evening and we are sorry we didn’t have a chance to capture the set - they are absolutely amazing ⚡️to listen to and see. Please check out their music!

The power of the universe is unbelievable, its gravitational pull struck us in Truchas, NM last fall. @amycalz and I went to open studios along a route called the High Road to Taos (New Mexico). We circled a handful of studios to stop at, our last stop being the amazing studio of @karenwippich where her friend and fellow artist Stan Peterson (@stanpeterson9403) was also showing his carving/sculpture work.

It ended up being that Stan worked in the same neighborhood that we had worked/lived in, in Oakland, CA. and for a lot of the same years. We both frequented (almost daily) the same frame shop/art gallery that was run by a mutual friend @kuhlframes and yet we had never met or ran into each other in Oakland. What a small world and awesome universe!

We kept in touch after this cosmic chance meeting. Stan had completed an artist residency at the famed Ghost Ranch (Abiquiu, NM). The work he started there and continued at his studio in Portland, Or would become “What The Ravens Saw”, his latest body of work, carved sculptures and paintings.

Stan came out to spend a day with us and with some of his work to wander the Galisteo Basin Preserve together. We shot video and photos of Stan posing his Raven carvings in dream like desert drenched vignettes. Transporting our reality as if we were peering into a mystic secret story.

This video is the result of our time together and a piece that feels really special to us. It’s the magic of making, when all the parts together ring of “rightness”. The impact of the high desert landscape, the layers of rock formations and colors. The feeling of Stan’s carvings, capturing the scenes he created by placing his sculptures into the landscape. All paired with a beautifully powerful original soundtrack by @tylerhbrown

We hope you enjoy this video and explore the world of @stanpeterson9403

I read and then re-posted a quote from Rick Rubin the other day - the quote was…

“Do what you can with what you have. Nothing more is needed and there are no excuses.”

It got me thinking - I’d like to share somethings I did with what I have.

We went to a concert @meowwolfsantafe on Sunday March 5th to see the beautifully stunning and heavenly @theesacredsouls (their record is out on @penroserecordings / @daptonerecords )

They played the song “Easier said than Done” which tugs at the heartstrings of @mrsbagzz and I. Bringing into focus our journey together over the last few years. One that landed us in the high desert outside Santa Fe, NM. A journey filled with the fear of uncertainty and uncomfortability, of refinding ourselves, of working on new levels of understanding, communication and appreciation in our relationship.

“True Love. It Ain’t Easy”

We feel compelled in this chapter of our lives to leave ourselves open as much as possible. To actively listen and see. To be inspired by nature, by human connection in the sharing of stories, by experiencing art and music — @theesacredsouls delivered one of those moments of inspiration, a moment you want to live in forever.

This film is a look into how the night and their music made us feel.

(If you can - play with 🔈SOUND ON - we appreciate 60 secs of your audio visual time ❤️‍🔥)

Our new friend and artist, Merecedes (@film.fawn) spent time staying with us (@mrsbagzz and I) at our studio in the desert outside of Santa Fe, NM in late January - Working on making and developing pieces for their upcoming solo show “WITHIN//WITHOUT” - Which opens Friday, March 3rd at the Washington pavilion visual arts center - Shultz Gallery from 5pm-8pm. (Sioux Falls, SD) (@washpav @siouxfallsartscouncil)

We filled many hours with talk about the journey of living a creative life, at our house over dinner, in the studio, around Santa Fe, and while taking walks through the Galisteo Basin. We spent time in the studio experimenting and collaborating. We spent time in the desert shooting and recording images. We sculpted the sonic design of the audio together, letting the feeling of the world Merecedes was creating for “WITHIN//WITHOUT” grow.

The 3 of us had a truly rich, inspired, authentic, creative time together. We appreciate @film.fawn sharing their creative journey with us and taking us the behind the scenes in making the work that will compose the show, a beautifully dreamy Polaroid Emulsion Lift, Watercolor, Embroidered world

This mini-🎥 for the upcoming solo show is a result of our time together.

Amy and I went to see @kevinmorby 2 weeks ago @meow__wolf in Santa Fe, NM.

It was 🤩💎🧨 amazing night. The kind of show you never want to end, the energy resonating with an indescribable feeling of rightness. His new album “This Is A Photograph” is absolute 🔥 and ❤️. If you haven’t listened (all of his work is wonderful!) or seen Kevin Morby and his killer band LIVE. Then you best get to it.

The energy of the night, the performance from the entire band, the venue and the images captured inspired this High Desert Diaries entry. Additionally I’ve been looking to use the output of some experiments we’ve been undertaking.

1) shooting super 8 - just got our first footage processed (as seen in the high desert diaries title screen)

2) been experimenting with creating textures to overlay onto moving pictures. Bought some oil based dye and a glass dish. Put that dish on a light table, poured water into the dish, dropped oil dye in the water and then used a straw to blow air into the dish creating movement to the oil dye that was floating on the water (as seen in different parts of this video) - recorded via an overhead tripod with an iPhone in 4K.

We ❤️ Music - we’re born with it, we die with it, and we celebrate everything in between with it,
Tony and Amy
