Tonight is the series finale of Life Below Zero! It’s been a pleasure to be a part of these 12 seasons, and while it’s been an honor to work for great production companies like BBC Worldwide and National Geographic, the best part of it was working alongside people who became great friends.

I came onboard season 1 thanks to the recommendation of my friend (and future LBZ Universe Showrunner) Joseph Litzinger. Hot tip: on the first season of a show, take episode 3 and let episode 1 & 2 take the “let’s try something new” bullets.

Thankfully we did try something new, and a show with no promotion became a sleeper hit for the network. Episodes were added to the order, then seasons. On the eve of season 2, we took a field trip to see our first real billboard (first slide).

And between long lunches and late nights editing and later nights celebrating and/or commiserating, we all formed bonds that would take us from the Emmys to Italy and even the San Fernando Valley.

It’s rare to get a run of work this long in this business, in this town, but it’s even rarer to work with such a damn good crew of human beings. If anyone is hiring, I’ve got a deep roster of talented people who are not assholes to send ya. There’s rare.

A quarter of my life has gone into this show, and I’ve definitely got the memories and more than enough incriminating pictures and videos to show for it. So tune in tonight for our send off, I’ll be there with a glass of whiskey for a final ride through Bush Alaska. taken in Alaska, USA by @bonnieviolinqueen

Another Emmy season in the books for team Life Below Zero!

Great to catch up with all the usual suspects, old coworkers, all my stunt folks, my (also Emmy award winning) doppelgänger and celebrate each other’s nominations and definitely not commiserate about the state of our industry!

Congrats to our LBZ Cinematography team on bringing home the Emmy! I wish we coulda been with y’all @mikecheeseman @dannyday1 cheering on that win. And congrats to my buddies @alanjbloom80 and @coolcatmatt66 on their respective Emmy wins!

Another great Emmy season in the books! While winning would be nice and all, it was great seeing old friends across all the Emmy events, and even better celebrating their wins (congrats @paulcross83 and @alanjbloom80 )!

And as always, the LBZ and NatGeo crew make for damn good company, especially where there’s an open bar concerned. Love you guys! taken in Emmys / Television Academy by @bonnieviolinqueen

More than a few years back, a denuded Van Nuys strip mall demanded that I park in its lot for a catholic hour, appreciating the cathedrals we’ve built to our stroads. Ever since then I’ve been looking for a place to share that liminal space. Here it is.

Thanks to my badass producer Bonnie for getting my vision off the ground and marshaling this team together. As always, John my DP killed it, not only making a damn pretty picture, but also helping figure out the logistics of how to pull off the lighting with Ryan and his crew. Altogether it was a great set, run by my badass AD Juliette (thanks for getting us out on time ;).

And finally thanks to Katie Alice Greer for letting me use her song and participating in the video. Barbarism’s a beautiful and haunting song, with an assuring vein of hopefulness. I likely streamed the song a couple thousand times to plan out the choreo. Maybe you can give it a spin or seven.

Bacon Diaz 2009-2023

Bacon (her anonymously given name, likely for her coat’s burnt palette) had been handed off between four or five homes before that day in a West LA parking lot when she spotted a couple approaching with an eager white and tan mutt.

Within minutes of uncharacteristic play from both pups, Bacon found a brother in Roscoe, and finally, a home.

Despite being the second, Bacon took on the role of older sister: stoic and in charge. Roscoe mostly followed her lead, although in braver moments, he would creep up on her food bowl (and get corrected by his sister).

Bacon’s genetic predisposition to herding led to a protective instinct of her adopted pack (apologies to friends, my boss, my neighbors and my mother). But the cruelest bite of that instinct is the anxiety of a member of the pack disappearing.

After Roscoe’s cancer diagnosis and passing, Bacon couldn’t eat without a perimeter check for her stalking brother. Eleven years of routines interrupted by fruitless searches only to come to the same heartbreaking realization. Watching animals mourn is incredible; no words or language to organize or obfuscate grieving. She certainly wouldn’t write an Instagram post about it.

In the spring her mood finally broke, and she was back to her aloof housecat persona. And there were good days together, and new dogs to meet. But just as summer dawned, she too was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Bacon and I enjoyed what time we could squeeze out of the summer (and she gave me an introvert’s favorite gift: a legitimate out from social events, good girl, Bacon). But with the walks getting shorter, we knew it was time.

With Natalie and I by her side, we set Bacon up in her bed, by the open patio door, in the same spot Roscoe journeyed on from. In the cool afternoon air, surrounded by her pack, Bacon left peacefully.

If there is a canine hereafter, I hope that its a parking lot, and that in the distance a white and tan mutt with a jaunty bounce approaches and that, at the very least, eleven years was enough. by @bonnieviolinqueen

Roscoe Diaz 2010-2023

Roscoe was adopted just shy of 12 years ago, a rescue from an abusive situation on the streets of Eagle Rock. His empathetic and introverted nature made him a great fit for the west coast branch of the Diazes. With a bit of time, Roscoe revealed himself as an earnest goofball, if Eeyore-ish at times.

He also didn’t really like other dogs. In his first year, we had to constantly correct his jackhammer barking at dogs blocks away. We were worried that we’d never find him a sibling, but the moment he saw Bacon across a parking lot: no barking. Upon introduction, no hostility, just pawful play, and he immediately had a sister.

The next ten years were road trips, first snows, new homes, naps, drunken New Years with adoptive grandparents, divorce, pandemics. You know, dog stuff, man’s best friend stuff. Whatever life had taken from him, we tried to give back.

Two weeks ago, Roscoe was diagnosed with terminal cancer. His initial symptoms were thankfully mild, and temporarily kept at bay with medication, so Natalie (flying in from NYC) and I spoiled him as much as time would let us. He got steaks, sunsets and permission to bark at whoever the fuck he wanted to (Bacon too, indulged; let breaking those habits and expectations be future Tony’s problem…)

On Friday, the medication’s effectiveness was waning and for Roscoe’s sake, we scheduled at home euthanasia for Sunday. That weekend he got a trot on the beach with his sister, a beautiful sunset, and sat in LA traffic for the last time.

Sunday, as the sun set, resting on his bed in front of our open patio door with Natalie and I engulfing him in as much love as we could pack for his next adventure, Roscoe passed on peacefully. Don’t worry little bud, the love you gave is in safe hands. Rest easy now Rosq ❤️ by @bonnieviolinqueen
