The Three Powers
Icchā · Jñāna · Kriyā
A three-part winter series at The Practise Intention is usually set in January, in a hurry, at the turn of the year. This series gives it a whole season. In the Tantric philosophy of Kashmir Śaivism, everything that comes into form moves through three powers: icchā, the power of desire; jñāna, the power of knowing; and kriyā, the power of action. This is how the universe creates itself. It is also how anything we care about moves from inner impulse into lived reality. Across three Saturdays, from the fallow dark of November to the first stirrings of the new year, we follow that same movement and craft a saṅkalpa slowly enough for it to take root. Icchā: What Is Germinating
Saturday 28 November
November is fallow ground, and beneath the surface something is already stirring. This session turns inward to listen: what lies buried, what wants to emerge, what our deepest desire might be. Introspective practice, journalling, and movement that loosens creative energy, to see what begins to flow. Jñāna: Illumination
Saturday 19 December
Two days before the winter solstice, at the darkest point of the year, we sit with what has surfaced. Knowing here is slow and steady: holding a desire in the light long enough to understand it. A session of stillness, clarity and candlelight. Kriyā: Into Form
Saturday 9 January
With the turn of the year, what has been felt and understood becomes action. A dynamic, energising session that gives the saṅkalpa a body, momentum and its first step into the world. Each three-hour workshop weaves philosophy and conversation with prāṇāyāma, āsana and meditation, and closes with yoga nidrā. The practice itself takes shape around who is in the room. Each session stands on its own, and together they form a complete arc. 1 - 4pm · £35 per workshop · £90 for all three https://SvecchaSchoolofYoga.as.me/Powers by @torymiellyoga
Putting this reel together made me a little nostalgic. Sunrise practice, long lunches that drifted into the afternoon, a cave full of people with their arms in the air… Tuscany, 8–14 May The Artistry of Life returns to Antico Macchione for a second year. Creative practice, journaling, and slow days in the hills south of Siena. Ibiza, 5–11 June White Isle, Wild Heart. Returning to The Chettinad exploring Svecchā and svātantrya, in the dome, surrounded by birdsong and the hills of Ibiza… lazy afternoons by the pool and little island exploration new for 2027 - Catalonia, 3–8 September The Art of Vitality. Strong morning practice, strength work, sauna, evening Yin and yoga nidra and cava from the vines outside your window. Booking opens 1 October. Groups are small, so the waitlist hears first. FCFS. 1. Landscape is not a backdrop. It reaches inside you and rearranges something. I had not expected the mountains to feel so alive. 2. Showing up to the unfamiliar is a practice in itself. The discomfort at the beginning of a retreat is almost always information, not a signal to leave. 3. A group of strangers can become a community within hours. I keep being surprised by this, and I hope I never stop being surprised by it. 4. The infinite is not only vast. It is also the detail of the lichen on a stone, the particular slant of morning light. Smallness and enormity hold the same thing. 5. The 6:45am sādhana was the hardest thing to walk out to every morning, and the most potent thing I did all week. 6. Retreats are not really about the āsana. They are about the conversations in between, the different lenses, the support you did not know you needed until someone offered it. 7. Portugal makes extraordinary wine, and pleasure and laughter and connection are a vital part of the practice. If any of these landed with you, I would love to know which one. by @torymiellyoga
Equanimity is probably the most misread of the four brahmavihāras. People assume it means not being affected. A kind of noble distance. I half believed this myself for years, somewhere in the background of my practice, as though the mark of real steadiness was that nothing quite landed. But that’s its near enemy. And it’s a subtle one, because it looks almost right from the outside. Upekkhā is something else. The quality that allows full contact, complete presence, being moved by what is genuinely moving, without losing ground. Not unmoved. Unshaken. The traditional image is the earth. Which receives everything without preference: rain, refuse, ceremony, beauty. Not because it is indifferent, but because it is stable enough to hold all of it. That stability is what makes the other three possible. Without it, Mettā can tip into need. Karuṇā into overwhelm. Muditā into performance. This is the fifth and final workshop in this cycle Embodied Heart series, until we begin again with new and old eyes. Two hours of conversation, contemplation, embodied practice, and Yoga Nidrā integration. Saturday 3rd October, 1pm to 4pm at @the.practise.colchester Book here or via the link in bio: https://SvecchaSchoolofYoga.as.me/EmbodiedHeartWS by @torymiellyoga
I have always thought of myself as a Caribbean water girl. Warm, turquoise, immediate. Mallorca made me reconsider that. There is a different rhythm to this west coast, something in the pace of the light itself. Waking at anchor and watching the sun climb slowly over the cliff tops, colour returning to the land before it reaches the water, is a different practice to what I am used to. Slower. Less demanding of me. I think about spanda often in my teaching, the idea that expansion and contraction are both whole, both fully themselves. Watching the light arrive each morning and leave each evening, with nothing out here to interrupt it, made that idea less abstract. It simply happened. It did not need my opinion on it. Stacy's food on board was its own kind of attention, plate after plate, care put into feeding a small group of women properly. Sleeping on the water and waking already in it does something to the body I am still working out how to describe. What this trip actually gave me was re-entry through submergence. Less doing. More being returned to something. Still turning it over, if I'm honest. by @torymiellyoga
Of course they are talking about retreats with me … what else!!! It’s fabulous here in Portugal at @estrelaserenity.resort - Retreat leaders I highly recommend. Last night we had the most amazing cheese and wine tasting (which prompted our little trend follow above) … The absolute best part about retreats are the people and communities that form and the conversations and experiences that are shared experiences. Next years calendar is filling up nicely so far - if you would like to join me make sure you are the first know when booking opens later this month - https://svecchayoga.com/retreats Obrigado 💙 by @torymiellyoga

The light peaked. The fullness is here. And most of us, in practice as in life, are already somewhere else. Not because we aren’t paying attention. But because we were never really taught to stay inside a moment once it arrived. To inhabit the peak rather than pass through it. The pose arrives and the body is already preparing to leave it. The expansion crests and the attention has moved on before the fullness has actually landed. In this practice we call it spanda: the sacred pulsation, the living rhythm between expansion and contraction. Both are whole. Both are perfect expressions of the same sacred throb. A practice rooted in recognition meets the season where it actually is. On the Ibiza retreat last month, day three was given over entirely to Viśrānti, resting in fullness. Not the rest of depletion. Not the stillness of collapse. Something more demanding than either. What struck me was how unfamiliar it felt. Not because we don’t rest, but because so much of our resting is actually waiting. Waiting for the next expansion. Waiting to feel ready again. Viśrānti asks something different. Whether you can abide in the fullness that is already here, without immediately moving through it toward something else. Whether the moment, exactly as it is, is something you are willing to actually inhabit. The practice right now is probably not asking you to reach further. It is asking whether you can receive what you already have. We return to Ibiza next year. From the waitlist already forming, I suspect it will be oversubscribed before booking even opens. A decade of practice does not produce a method. It produces a voice. And that voice cannot be downloaded or accelerated. It arrives slowly, through the hand that returns to the same gesture ten thousand times, through the years of staying when leaving would have been easier. This is why Sovereign Heart Training is built the way it is. Four immersive residential weeks, entirely in person, across the arc of a year. Genuine formation has its own pace. Presence cannot be streamed. The hand that repeats, remembers. The body that stays, knows. And the voice that emerges from that staying is finally one's own. If this is the training you have been waiting for, we would welcome a conversation. No urgency here, only an open door. by @torymiellyoga
Four practices. Rooted in Buddhist teaching, carried through the Yoga Sūtras, read through a Tantric lens. And a question I haven’t finished answering: what is this actually for? Full essay on The Longer Hold, link in bio. by @torymiellyoga
I teach tāḍāsana as undeniability. The mountain pose. The place we stand before we offer, before we bow, before anything begins. Not a shape. A quality of presence so complete there is no argument with it. You are here. Fully here. The Serra da Estrela has that same quality in the land itself. Ancient, enormous, unhurried. Something in the body recognises it and stops performing. Embodied Heart Retreat , 29 August to 4 September. One place remains. If it feels like yours, write to me. by @torymiellyoga
