in 36 years at the Town Pump, i cannot ever recall pulling 12 empty kegs in one week of business.

what does this mean?

its means you people are savages. it means CSU won. it means you took full advantage of Labor Day weekend. it means it was hot outside. but most importantly, it means we appreciate your patronage and support!! thank you for helping us have a great holiday week!! #townpump #fortcollins #oldtownfortcollins @odellbrewing @odellbrewing @newbelgium @coorsbanquet @coorslight #fattire by @townpumpfortcollins

ever wonder what it must have been like to mosey into an old western saloon like The Town Pump way back in late 1800’s or the early 1900’s? I think about it all the time and often dig into the history of Colorado saloons, breweries and tasting rooms. did you know that the very first brewery in this area was founded in 1862 near LaPorte until it moved to Bellvue in 1870, however, the first brewery in Fort Collins was established in 1866. Following the abandonment of the military fort in 1867, Fort Collins grew rapidly as a pioneer town and by the 1870s and 1880s, the town was already home to roughly 13 saloons and multiple liquor dealers. Based on the beer culture in the front range of Colorado, Adolf Coors had moved to Golden, Colorado from Barmen, Germany and established Coors Brewing in 1873. #beerhistory #coloradobeer #beerculture #fortcollinshistory #townpumpfortcollins by @townpumpfortcollins

24 years ago today, the Town Pump Pail Ale became our number one selling product. In October of 2002, the Town Pump and @odellbrewing made the decision to collaborate on an exclusive pale ale before the Pale Ale craze hit the craft brewing market. In 2001, we were serving a rare brew known as “Hop Dragon” which was brewed by one of the first breweries in Fort Collins, HC Berger. we were the only gig in town brave enough to sell this extremely hoppy ale (for its time) and we had built a very strong contingency of beer connoisseurs that loved this exclusive taste. when Berger went out of business, we sold the last 6 half barrels in a matter of days, which was unheard of at the time. with nothing even close to replace Hop Dragon, I went to Doug Odell and delivered the story of what was going on, hoping he would fill the void. he said to me, “yeah Jake, I think we can do that on our mini system then let’s just see how it goes.”…and The Town Pump Pail Ale was born. hard to believe that was 24 years ago and to think about where the Pale Ale market has gone since then is mind boggling. Thank you so much Odell Brewing Company for 24 amazing years of this incredible brew. #townpumppailale #odellbrewing #beer #craftbrew #paleale by @townpumpfortcollins

for those of you that are curious, intrigued, opposed or just fans of the Town Pump, the rumors are true that we are in the process of expanding into the 94 year old barbershop next door. we are in the architecture and engineering phase.

we know that you all love our beloved little bar as a cozy, quaint and crowded space…and we appreciate everyone so much. beyond these words. we love and respect this space too.

in the 36 years that i have been associated to the Pump, and 26 as owner, i have had many discussions with two of the previous owners Dennis Newlun RIP (owner 1981-2000) and Danny Rogers (owner 1973-1978) about what it would be like to expand the Town Pump. with Dennis, it was always visualized into the barbershop as the only way to scale the bar and i recently discussed the expansion concept with Danny as a way of seeking advice, because I respect and trust him profoundly. he was very much in support of this idea and happy to see the inspiration that i shared with him. with their blessings in my heart, i decided to move forward.

the primary concern that I’ve lost sleep over is “how would the patrons and fans of the Town Pump feel and react to the addition?” I considered this deeply, many many times…and still do, however, after lots of research into the late 1800’s and early 1900’s history of Fort Collins and Colorado, my vision became more clear. i searched published images and documentation of western bars and saloons in that era and decided to create an environment in the new space as close to that time period as i can possible afford. having said that, the key to this movement is to maintain and sustain the OG Town Pump side as much as possible, with minimal invasiveness. the best way to achieve that is to cut a doorway in between the two spaces and hang a full size door to maintain separation and leave the rest of the Town Pump side just EXACTLY the way it is. this will allow us to operate under the same license and move forward with the addition. so, with the exception of a door in the wall, the OG space will remain unchanged.

the concept of the new space has changed in my head so many times, but after lots of…(continued in c by @townpumpfortcollins

you’ve heard the term, where the rubber meets the road? which means, the critical moment when a plan, theory, or idea is put into actual practice and tested in the real world.

well, in the Town Pump, this is where the rubber meets the road… #barstoolsanddreamers #shineyseats #townpumpfortcollins #barstools #happyhour by @townpumpfortcollins

old saloons and taverns are inspiring to me. the mid to late 1800’s and early 1900’s had such a deep rooted growth in bars and saloons nationwide. during that era, saloons and bars served as the heartbeat of American frontier towns, functioning as vital social, economic, and political hubs.

Saloons were often the very first permanent structures erected in a new western settlement, beating out churches and general stores because they provided camaraderie for lonely workers like miners, cowboys, railroaders, and loggers who rarely drank alone.

Sometimes when I’m in here cleaning the bar early in the morning, I think about what it was like over 100 years ago. I envision and often hear cowboys walking in with spurred boots and six shooters strapped to their hips, obnoxious politicians strutting in with top hats and fake smiles, and groups of townies sitting at a round table stacking poker chips.

through the decades past, bare bones taverns like the Town Pump existed on good service and communal atmospheres…ownership philosophies were handed down from generation to generation, and while times changed around it, the same philosophies exist today.

The other day I was chatting with Danny Rogers, owner of the Town Pump from 1973-1978, about history here, and he confirms from his existence at the bar that even as a young boy…he remembers the Town Pump being packed for happy hour and into the nights in the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s. He reminded me that no matter what changed, people always came and supported this bar. like I said in the beginning of this post, it truly is inspiring. #townpumpfortcollins #oldschoolbars #oldtaverns #1909 by @townpumpfortcollins
